My old gym got took over by a larger chain gym. They stripped it out and made it look nice (clinical....but nice).

Didn't particularly like it before, my opinion hasn't greatly improved now it's open again (other than a power rack and some kettle bells, theyve reused the old equipment)

The plus side is, it's a 5 min jog from my house and it's cheap.

Or do I go back to my original gym, which is blood and sawdust type place with an awesome atmosphere, but it's a faff to get to?

Anyway, got me wondering who goes to what type of gym and why?

Use a local hotel, it’s quiet, roid head free and a pool and cheap deals on staying/dinner.

My gym is old school spit and saw dust type. Lot's of machines and free weights and the music is banging.

I go to a budget chain gym... I don't really give two hoots about the atmosphere. I joined there because of the recommendation of a PT.

If I've not got a PT session then I have my headphones in and am in my own little world anyway

I use fit4less decent enough. Good music, relaxed atmosphere and only a small number of "gym freaks"!!! Plus only a small walk from my front door lol

We use a local holiday park, it's quiet, local, fairly cheap and has a good variety of equipment and weights. Most importantly it's convenient!

I have a local thegym membership because it's 5 minutes away by bike. It's ok but not very inspiring. I recently joined a Nuffield gym/health centre. Very well equipped, many free classes and a pool, spa and sauna which is nice. The corporate discount doesn't hurt either. Free 1/4ly health and fitness checks. I had mine yesterday and I'm in the top 20%.....for old guys..

I've always been happiest at hardcore gyms, atmosphere makes all the difference. Once you become attuned to good gym ettiquite then the terrible habits that go unpunished at regular gyms just annoys the fuck out of you. That said, I now go to a regular gym because it's open 24/7 and it's not unusual for me to train at 1am. Still miss the hardcore gyms though.

I use "pay as u gym" as im around the country a lot with work. I pay a monthly fee of 44 quid for my chosen gym, and with that have access to all participating gyms up to and including that price - currently an extra 1,280 gyms around the country. Some are better than others, but when I'm working away I'm never more than a short drive away from a gym I can use. Message me for details and if you sign up via my reccomendation we both get money off.

I use one that’s part of the Gymophobics franchise. No men, no mirrors, no queues to use the equipment and all ages and abilities catered for. Plus lots of advice and help on hand at all times. 10 pieces of equipment, 3 minutes each piece in a circuit so done in half an hour. It works for me

My membership covers me for 2 gyms, both owned bybthe same people, but they aren't chains, just local business.

1 is a proper spit and sawdust gym. Focus is mainly on powerlifting. There is a treadmill, but I don't think it's been used in about 5 years.

The other is smarter, but still holds the same values. The trainers know everyone's name and greet you like a friend.

There is a Fitness First around the corner from my house, but I never see anyone sweating when they leave there.

I use my local leisure centre gym, it’s very well equipped, I go at non busy times so no waiting for equipment. Always a pt on hand and they do a tailored routine for everyone that asks. All on a key that records your workout as you go and tells you what machine next. Plus they’re going to have a £1 million refurb soon so should be better x

Possibly because they have a pool/sauna/steam room and nice showers? Or at least the one I used to go to did and that was always one of the fitness first selling points.

I'm at a DW express now. No pool, no classes but decent enough showers so I sweat in the gym but come out smelling nice and clean thanks.

I do not use any gym.

I was made the way I am.

I have a good diet.

I walk everywhere

Don't have a car

Don't worry about my six pack but I seem to lose six pounds every week from just walking.

I use yoga to relax

I could never be with anyone who says gym life is better than sex. Or spends hours in it rather than actually leading a fit life.

I get NHS discount through work which I can use at most gyms in my area. I tend to go to the gym at my golf club as it comes free with my golf membership and it has a pool, sauna and steam room aswell as a first class gym.

I use Fitness First in London, mainly as originally my Employer was giving discounted joining fees as part of their salary package. Decent enough, I’m lucky in that I can go outside peek hours so it’s not so busy. Plus my membership fee is held at 2012 rates for the entire time I’m a member (apparantly when you join that’s the rate you pay for ever) which makes it good value now. Plus I can use any of their chain.

I only use mine once or twice a week. Membership comes with the martial arts I do there. So when you add it up it’s great value. £40 a month unlimited gym use and Muay Thai and jiu jitsu 4x times a week.
