WEEK THIRTY-FIVE!!! Or there abouts!

.

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Hey lovely Fab Crap Runners!

It's Week Thirty-five!!!

.

.

.

How is everyone doing?

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January, a bunch of Fabbers began improving their fitness through running. None of them were natural athletes but they did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (Mrs T used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

FOR MORE EXPERIENCED RUNNERS:

Tell us what you’re up to with your running, your training and your races. Let’s us know your highs and lows. Please cheer on the newbies and give advice if they ask.

.

.

.

FCRC SOCIAL PARKRUN POLL

I've set up a Doodle poll - completely anonymous - to set up our next Social parkrun. It will be at Great Denham (near Bedford), but I plan on scouting out locations for those who cannot get there.

You can vote in the poll here:

https://doodle.com/poll/m87dnqb3vsr4pcuv

I managed to make the last one so private that I can't access the results if yiu voted before, or would like to participate again, can you do so by Wednesday?

.

.

.

AND FINALLY:

Who is working towards a specific goal? Tell us your progress.

Well the fem is doing around 5 miles twice a week, male is running 40-50 miles per week, his training for an ultra in March has now started, just building up the miles on each run then dropping down for a week to work on speed.

The female is running between 15 -20 miles a week, and the male is running 20-30 miles a week but this is increasing.

She is training to run 10 miles on road and 10 miles trail (without stopping... this is very important to her lol) and he has a trail marathon in October.

Good luck to all the runners on here

Running 10 miles without stopping is a big achievement.

An ultra hats off to you sir!

Our advice is don't start off too quickly, Hubby made that mistake in his marathon and he was flagging at 22 miles ad had to walk a bit before carrying on

I am on Strava. The question of a group on there has come up before, however there is always the worry of real identities and locations.

I'd be happy to set one up for those that are comfortable to join?

I was out yesterday evening, I need to make the switch to miles but it feels easier and further in kms.

I hate the odd numbers! I ran an extra km last night over my target distance just to have the round number!

So impressed and proud of C, I've been running for years, this will hopefully be my 4th marathon start and with a bit of luck my 3rd finish I stupidly decided a trail ultra 2 weeks after a road marathon was a good idea (The marathon is just another training run right?)

C on the other hand has only been running since late March and has gone from running a hundred metres or so while walking to nearly ticking 10 miles today. She was only supposed to be doing 8 but after I left to run my extra bit she snuck in an extra loop

I train in kilometres in terms of pace etc, short runs and hill sessions etc all make more sense in kilometres but longer runs tend to be in miles in my head for some reason.

Happy to join a Strava group so long as it has a vanilla name, most of my followers on there wouldn't bat an eyelid if they saw I had joined the 'Dirty wife swapping gangbang runners' but there's probably a few who I'd rather they didn't lol

I think it’s names and near precise locations that most are sceptical about, as a SM it’s not really a worry for me but for some it will be a very real worry.

Well after having an ice pack on left ankle over night it was ok this morning

My right leg is giving me pain but always does on 2nd day. I think I more right focused when I run

For me my aim is to get to a 5km in under 30mins.....the problem is I am still carrying to much weight

I always force myself to have a rest day and that is today. I am going to gym tomorrow, going to try and do 4 lots of 1km in less 6 min per km that will get my body used to it....trying to alternate between a time run and speed run

"Finally started my couch to 5k, first run done today "

I used to always say i'm not built for running or come up with other reasons to not try it but I am so glad that I do. I used to be very self conscious when running but now I don't notice the cars and I like to acknowledge the fellow sporting passers by. Yes it's tough mentally and physically but the improvement over time is noticeable and I now enjoy the personal challenge.

My advice is to stick with it, find out about you as a runner for example learn your body's reactions to pace, distance, thirst, hunger, injury...I am still learning and even today did a long run without tape on my feet and now have blisters on both feet.... naughty girl lol

Keep us updated on here and we will offer help and encouragement as a group x

If you're running to lose weight you'll be better off not concentrating on speed. Around 75% of your runs should be at a pace where you have enough breath to hold a conversation. Too much emphasis on speed will lead to injuries, particularly if you're carrying more weight than you should.

I agree, especially as you’re coming back from injury. Don’t try and ask your body to do too much too fast.

If you’re experiencing pain and discomfort then maybe taking it easy for a few days to allow your body to recover would be a good plan.

Remember recovery isn’t linear

You should also get your gait analysed and see if new trainers could help. I need supported trainers due to flat feet.

Tonight I did 8 miles in 1:05:00

Morning FCRC, I got my lazy arse out this morning and attempted another hill!

First time in ages, my legs stopped 10 steps from the top but I continued the run. 7km, 90 metres elevation, not my best, but happy with that

Well Done !!!

The key for running up hills (what we have found) is keep your back straight and keep moving your arms too, if you need to slow your pace down then do that - think of a car going up a hill, you tend to drop down a gear to go up it - also look for markers to push yourself to e.g. go to the next tree/lamp post/car/bus stop

That’s good advice, I find that shortening my stride helps too so you’re legs don’t have to do so much work on each stride.

As awful as it sounds pyramids or hill sprints will help in getting you used to the different techniques and muscles used in hill running aswell

Actually I didn’t do a full run tonight Just done 2 power 1km managed 5.45 and 5.30 for each of the km. Then mixed it with 15 mins on bike at nearly full mbr - over 7km, with a high incline walk of 5 mins to finish off. For me I like to mix it up so my body doesn’t get used to one type of excersise.

For me 5.30 is the fastest I have run a km since school. Hard but happy. Legs and ankles were fine today. Aiming to try and get to sub 27.30 eventually for a 5km. At the moment I am just below 31 mins.

I am also making more of an effort to warm up and down before hand. I know about 18 months ago I was at about 28 mins for a 5km but then I was 12 kg lighter

I have my Strava set up to hide half a mile from my home, so people get a rough idea I am in Ely (I admit to this anyway) but not to my penthouse suite lol (I think it is half a mile it uses.

Anyway ran 8km tonight (possibly sooner after dinner than I should have done - about 45 minutes) in 45 minutes 29 seconds.

Might actually invest in more than just the socks if I carry on at this rate.

On the poll I have 2 late night Fridays of drinking on the first two dates I said I could do so they are relatively unlikelies but not impossibles

Seems loads of new faces on this thread

Well we did a long walk on Monday as our last proper training session for Marathon du Medoc, it;s not going to be fast so a Hilly 17 miles off road will have been challenging enough. Recent training has been hampered by what we thought was a broken toe for my gf last week which would have seen us DNS, no way I'd do that one on my own! We fly out in a weeks time and I;m getting super excited now

Lots of people saying they are doing a marathon or an ulr#tra - Im always nosey and want to know which ones!

I'm tpying with also entering Beachy Head for October but hopefully common sense will prevail!!

As for your runs; well done both of you!

I went through Ely today

I'll bear that in mind when choosing the dates!"

Thanks. Hope you waved x x x

Yes, I'd been half expecting it as he'd hidden his profile a couple of weeks ago, but I was hoping he'd stay and let us know how he got on with his marathon!

It's ok to pause. Or if you really don't want to, drop your speed down a bit and you'll be able to run for a bit longer

Thanks

Its not as bad as I thought but I’m still not that keen on running and I find running in a park much harder than on the treadmill, at least on the treadmill I can focus on one spot.

I physically can't run on a treadmill - I may be known for falling off the back

But then again, I can also fall over outside too

You do need to keep your wits about you when running outside.

Best of luck!

My other half has a 16 mile event tomorrow, last minute thing but will be a great training run for him. I am looking forward to going along to support him.

First 5km since back in the gym this morning. Time was 32.10. Not great time but that is the most amount of running in one session since back at the gym. Avg per km was 6min 26 secs. Not the quickest but I managed it and that’s what I wanted to do!!!!!

Sweating as fuck though lol

- thank you. It’s a decent time. Tbh I have been doing a lot of shorter runs for the last 8 weeks or so, so I knew I could manage the first 3.5 to 4km. I think I had only done maybe two 4km plus runs so I knew the last 0.5km would be hard.

I would say maybe try lots of shorter runs 1 to 3km then stop for a bit in between then run again. So like 3*1km. That helped me.

Each person has there own indervidual time. My quickest is 27.30 ish. Now that is 1 min less a km and there is no way on this planet I can get anywhere near that time at the moment. I am carrying 10kg weight more than I should.

My 5k pb is around 27 and a half minutes which was done when I was regularly running 13-15 miles on a Sunday morning.

I'm quite content with my current 5k time, although if I could get it down to under 30 again I'd be happier.

I had a massive meltdown before yesterday's parkrun after a pretty horrible week. Forced myself to go and ran with my girlfriend. Tried to pace her to a year's best but we started too fast but still enjoyed it far more than I thought I would.

6 days to marathon du medoc and cannot wait to do it

Headed out onto the trails today

I’ve entered a trail half in February so I need to get my trail legs working

Ended up going a mile further than I intended but getting lost is part of the fun
