What's with the whole no hugging dudes thing?

I'm sat outside in a bar in Pisa, Italy enjoying the warm evening air and a couple of good male friends across the way were saying goodbye and gave each other a great hug. It reminded me of how my Italian and American male friends are much more demonstrative of their affection and how, in other countries, guys regularly give each other emotional support by giving really quite affectionate hugs.

What is it with English men that we're so uptight about this stuff? I'm not talking gay, bi, nor even Fab straight here. I'm just talking giving a mate a big hug.

I like to squeeze the balls of my friends when I see them. I've lost four friends but it does help you realise who's friends and just acquaintances.

PS Don't try with work colleagues.

Loads of guys hug, at least loads of guys I know do. Maybe not big man hugs but they certainly embrace.

I hate hugging but my friends all make me!

I think it’s fine to have great big man hugs , but sometimes it’s a bit worrying when the guy you hug gets an erection as you hug

Even more so when he rubs it up against you , and thrusts as it grows ....

So I don’t do it any more

I just have my good friend a hug and he had a backpack on - which left my hand resting on top of his bum. We both acknowledged it and were comfortable with it.

Other nationalities can hug and grope each other as much as they please. A good firm handshake will suffice for this Englishman.

I think younger men are more inclined to do the half handshake half hug thing.

a quandary, could you change my mind?

Some friends are huggers some are huggies, thats male and female alike. Some of my male friends I know it would make them uncomfortable if I did hug, others it's a natural thing it's not sexual! It's for close friends almost the friends that I would have chosen as family if I were able to 'no change that' that I consider as close as family.

Men in the UK will give a hug. I'll grant you that. But I have a good Italian friend here who hugs me like he's the big brother I never had. He holds me and asks if I'm ok. He makes that effort to connect with me and let me know he loves me and he often won't let go until he feels he's conveyed that to me. Compared to this I find British men quite emotionally reserved.

Having lived in Italy and California, I'm comfortable being more emotionally open and honest. That's something that often throws women on dates as being unusual in a good way. I like living in those places because it forces me to be less British. But I'd feel weird being that way with guys back in the UK. That's why I posted the op.

I believe it stems back to around the victorian era and homosexuality being made illegal. Pretty much all forms of male to male physical contact stopped in case it got considered suspicious by others, over time it just became the norm in Britain. Time passing since the law changed and multiculturalism etc are changing it. But slowly.

I'm not a natural hugger. I only hug the friends who are. We can still support each other emotionally, convey our appreciation of each other, find out if we're ok without physical contact.

We're all different and all have a level of physical contact we're happy with.

I have a very dear aunt who I never hugged as an adult, the last physical contact I had with her was when I held her hand as she died. I don't think the lack of hugging lessened our affection for each other in any way.
