I like a discussion, opposing views, passionate feelings, being proven wrong, correcting others or even learning something new.

But some people do rather like to wade in with personal attacks as their opening gambit to any discussion. Do you feel better after typing them to someone you'll probably never meet or doesn't even care?

I often feel I’m on the receiving end of those, but equally there’s probably someone ascribing that this is my intent to others.

Who knows if the ones you spot, OP are even intended and hence how can the perpetrator answer your question then?

Some probably are though.

Yes because those who make deliberate personal attacks will own up to doing so on this thread. I mean, they might. But it's unlikely.

There are too many people who jump into a debate with their own views but cannot get their head around how someone can have a different opinion.

I don't intend coming across as blunt/rude/however you want to describe how I come across when challenging another person's views, my intention is to do it in a fairly polite way. I'm sure others disagree though

True. I guess after reading a few threads I've noticed patterns.

Instead of providing an opinion to the contrary, it starts off with a personal attack or jibe and rather vitriolic language.

"I didn't say it like that" ? Doesn't wash sorry. It's quite clear when you've gone it for the throat to a fellow poster. Ah well, they carry the anger not me.

I keep quiet mainly and try not to get involved.

I've said mean personal things and apologised soon after. The person in question forgave me. I'll probably never meet them but I'd like to for a coffee.

A lot of strong personalities in the forums, and some are very set in their thought patterns where others are open to different points of views. Some also come across very differently in the forums than they do when chatting in messages when they have shown interest.
