I was always under the impression that bumble bees weren't able to sting until i got stung by one.

They’re generally reluctant to sting but will do so in self defence of either themselves or their colony but having expended their defence, they themselves will die shortly afterwards.

Getting stung is of course never pleasant but think of it in the nice way; the little fellow died with honour and in the defence of his Queen
