Cancer of the throat

I hope you will all read my post, 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with cancer of the throat.

I have since been told what is going to occur over next 3 months, for those who are interested I would like to blog my story as it unravels... sorry if it’s not what you wanted on a swinging site, but my intentions are to help others..

Diagnosis, so I have been suffering a sore throat, at 8 weeks I made an appointment with my local GP

To be told “me too it’s a corpus going around”, note no examination of my throat, few weeks later I complained again, this time I was given a nasal spray, couple of weeks later I complained again. They sent me for blood samples, which came back fine..

Couple of weeks later, at the same doctors a new young lady doctor took notice, asked of family history (aunt died throat cancer 2 years ago)

That afternoon she rang me back, she made an appointment at the hospital for an inspection of my throat via the nasal canal

Two weeks later a consultant whilst carrying out the inspection said “I don’t like the look of that” this was the first person to actually check my throat!!

A biopsy and tonsillectomy was arranged

After which ( they didn’t remove my tonsils)

I had been diagnosed with cancer.

My point on this is..... don’t listen to anyone else, if you know something is wrong, push and push, for me at the moment it appears I may be ok, but if I hadn’t pushed this it would have been too late, it’s now been 6 months

I am waiting on

Dental removal of teeth

A feed tube implanted in my stomach ( my throat will be to sore to eat food)

And my face mask to be made for the radio therapy

If I get enough response I will update as and when I can

Thanks for the kind messages

I have been offered to see specialists in Coventry to have robotic surgery as well

But issue with this is I would still need the radiotherapy

At present my concern is the headaches and Jaw aches

Sounds like you have had to fight tooth and nail for people to take notice but now they have.

I would check up on updates. Plus I wish you all the best with that, your recovery and being fab.

Ok radiotherapy of the throat area affects your teeth and jawbone, teeth can become loose, and even crumble. The jawbone cannot repair thoroughly if you have a tooth out after radiotherapy, it doesn’t heal will lead to complications. So you see an oral surgeon in a hospital, he assesses your teeth, any that he feels are not going to need treatment for the next 10 yrs will have to be removed. I was more afraid of this than the radiotherapy!!

I am waiting to hear but it looks like I may only loose 1 tooth

"Did Anyone mention how you could have caught it?

FFS - you don't "Catch" cancer! "

True, it has been attributed to giving oral sex to people who have the HPV virus.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a type of sexually transmitted disease (STD). While it usually affects the genitals, it can show up in other areas as well. One subtype of oral HPV, called HPV-16, can cause throat cancer. The resulting cancer is sometimes called HPV-positive throat cancer.

Technically you can catch throat cancer.

A friend of mine had a massive lump in his neck.

I told him to go to gp. Twice, second Dr sent him straight to a

Consultant. He had a massive ulcer under his tongue.

Consultant told him to give up smoking.

A biopsy was made. He had cancer.

A mask was made for radiotherapy.

He had an operation to cut his neck open. Took skin graphs to put in his mouth to repair his tongue.

I know how you must feel.

Smoking and drinking excess causes some of the cancers we are seeing more of. Mainly smoking hence consultants tell you to stop smoking and that's the reason why you have it.

I don't know you but I'm so sorry to read this. It hits home. My father was misdiagnosed in a similar way but over a 5 year period. His chances would have been hugely improved had it been caught earlier. I genuinely hope this is the case for you and that you go on to fully recover and live life to the fullest. God bless. Rooting for you x

I want to thank all of you for the kind messages on the forum and mails of support via this site!

I am doing this to raise awareness of this desease, as I feel it’s misdiagnosed to often!!

I spoke to my youngest daughter today ?

( both as yet are not aware of my diagnosis)

She is experiencing symptoms similar to my own, I am sure it’s nothing , but my own adventure gives me concern over her welfare.

My wife and I have held back telling them due to commitments they both have had over last few weeks, tomorrow is going to be the toughest day of my life where I tell them about my cancer...

Today has been the same as yesterday head neck and ear ache, normal painkillers don’t seem to do anything, but 2 bottles of Weston’s vintage 8.2% cider seem to mellow things into a nice medium. I know it’s not good for me, but to be honest it’s better than suffering, thanks again

Much love to you. My mum recently passed away from pancreatic cancer, another cancer woefully underfunded for research etc. When I look back at her past few years and all of the symptoms that she displayed, I wish we had pushed it more.

Well done for standing your ground and I’m sorry you have to go through this, dig deep and fight the fucker xx

Not looking forward to it, but they need to know. It’s early I’m up with a coffee ( thank goodness for modern coffee machines) and dogs. I’ll post how the day goes later, already feeling the start of full ache in my left temple area

Sorry to hear you're going through this. FWIW I have a family member who had the same diagnosis and went through the things you've mentioned as part of the treatment. It was an aggressive treatment and can only imagine how hard it was for him, but it worked and he was given the all clear years ago. Wishing you all the best and hope your family will provide a great support system xx

Oh my dear OP .... my thoughts are with you .....but I can see you are a tough cookie and will deal with this with support of your loved ones....

On a practical note , I do hope you will go down the route of medical neglect .... from the start of your symptoms/ visit to your gp surgery and your subsequent visits then diagnosis ..

Perhaps getting some advice from a medical negligence company .....

Good luck OP .

"I hope you will all read my post, 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with cancer of the throat.

Stella heels (ladyQ)"

Sending all our love xx The treatment is worse than the illness. Frank is in remission for non-Hodgkins. It took a few weeks of him being in hospital to get a diagnosis.

Macmillan are fantastic - they supported him in filling out paperwork & gave us a grant which enables us to have a few days away before his stem cell transplant.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it x

It just goes to show how different areas/GPs respond differently. When I lost my voice for 3 weeks last year (stress) I was automatically referred to ENT clinic and a camera down my throat.... luckily it was only vocal chords damaged by gastric acid ..

No one can get another person banned, a ban is given for something a person actually types on the forum There was no rule breaking on this thread for anyone to get a ban

People are in danger of getting a ban for mentioning bans so it might be best to just chat about the OP

I would love to read your updates! I would like to be part of the support for you. My dad died from cancer 4 years ago, and I’m glad they’re hopeful of the treatment for you. I really hope you beat this horrible disease! Many people are diagnosed too late and to think you’ve waited 6 months is absolutely disgusting. Why they didn’t check your throat I will never know! I’ve always had mine checked when they’ve been sore, even if it’s been a day! I’m so sorry they took that long! They took about a year to diagnose my dad and they didn’t realise how bad it was until he lost his ability to speak (they initially thought it was liver and lung cancer), so it makes me angry to think you’ve been left for that long!

Sending you massive hugs and healing vibes!

So I had my feed peg ( stomach pipe) fitted all went well, got hone yesterday around 2pm

Wife and I made a cup of tea, so we could sit and relax. Still tender but ok!!

However they cleaned by peg before I came home, had breakfast and two cups of tea before this all fine, so when I got home I had no reason to suspect what was going to happen, I took a large amount of my mug of tea and was immediately in horrific pain, I have never experienced anything like it!

We called an ambulance which rushed me back to hospital in agony for about 4 hours..

It would appear when they cleaned my peg it detached from my stomach wall so the tea escaped into my abdomen.. it was horrific

But got home this morning so all ok now

"So I had my feed peg ( stomach pipe) fitted all went well, got hone yesterday around 2pm

Oh my f@cking God! That must have been scary! "

I actually thought at first it was the end

Oh my goodness, I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the PEG! I hope it's all smooth sailing (or as smooth as possible at least) for you from now on!

good luck. My hubby has a sore throat and a large swollen gland in his throat. His brother died from throat cancer and his uncle has recently been diagnosed too. He's obviously letting his mind work overtime and has been worried. The Dr couldn't see inside his throat cos he gags on the stick they use. He's had blood tests but he's been reassured that they don't suspect anything too sinister. I pray they're right. Xx

"I hope you will all read my post, 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with cancer of the throat.

Stella heels (ladyQ)"

Fucking hell!

The NHS are such scum to fuck you about like that.

You should be treated in 24 hours in a better country. It's shocking where the money goes.

They do it to me also but my issues are not the same.

Both my grandads had what you have.

"Today I had my mask fitting

Nor a nice experience to be honest, once fitted and moulder into shape it restricts all movement of neck and head"

Believe me that will come in handy later, you don't want the wrong bit getting nuked.

All I can offer in advice is drink carrot and beetroot juice, made from the actual thing, not brought in cartons. Also get goanabana juice made by rubicon. Also half a tea spoon of backing soda in a glass of water a day. Lots of hot lemon juice too. Best of luck. X
