Sending food back

Camberley occasionally doncaster

Currently sat in a well known chain restaurant.and I have had to send my main course back. Twice. The first time was because the main course was cold (if food is supposed to be hot, I like it hot). The second time the main course had items on that I had asked to be removed due to some slight intolerances. So this is now the third time this food has been put in front of me. I am carefully looking for signs of tampering/spit etc.

Has anyone else had similar restaurant nightmares? Do you complain?

Only if it's a shit steak and I'm in a pricey steak restaurant.

I don't blame the chef, I'm not prepared to spend £25+ on a shit piece of beef.

I've stopped ordering steak in restaurants now, because I get annoyed with sending it back every time. It's rare my steak is ever rare the first time.

I used to work in the restaurant trade, I had to ban one family as they came every week and always complained and got their bill down to half. In the end I told them if the food is that crap, to not bother coming back.

As a chef, I'm very aware of how hard kitchen staff work, but I refuse to served food that IMO isn't as it should be or how I ordered it.

I have absolutely no issue sending back food, I've even offered to go 'give the chef' a hand before

That I find is the problem with chain restaurants. .. standard of food is the same old

I prefer more home cooked foods at a decent pub with a proper chef ... not someone whos employed on a low wage

Who thinks they know what they are doing .

Slight tangent but went out to eat recently, waitress didn't write the order down.

This always fills me with trepidation because the order invariably comes out wrong.

Surprise surprise ,wrong order duly appeared.

When I suggested in future she wrote the order down I got glared at.

Fuck sake how hard can it be?

(And yes I've worked in catering)

Eating out is so expensive I definitely complain if it's not right. I had to send something back in Nando's last night actually because it was missing something, then when it came back it was disintegrating so back it went again. To be fair, both the waitress and then the manager apologised profusely and had it remade from scratch - I couldn't fault them. I accept we all make mistakes, it's how restaurants respond to those which I judge them by.

Complain by all means, but during the meal is playing bodily fluid roulette! Some kitchens will take it as a reasonable request, others uncalled for criticism. And what happens after that is with the gods. Personally I'd complain afterwards if the food isn't a complete car crash and if they don't deal with it appropriately don't tip and don't go back. But if it is the aforementioned RTA, tell them your not eating or paying for it and walk.

We went out for a meal for my nephew’s 21st birthday. He’s a chef, works as second in charge at his restaurant and the only reason he wasn’t promotors to head chef when the last one left was because he’s so young. Out of a party of 15 of us guess who’s order they messed up.........serving a seafood starter which isn’t hot enough to a qualified chef is never going to go down well

I certainly do complain. There meant to be chefs.if you can’t cook don’t pretend to be a chefs I got a full refund on a meal with 28 people. Including drinks. In a well known restaurant because bad service happen 3 weeks in a row. I was shocked they done that.

All I done was documented all of the times and errors and said if I don’t get a discount. It will be on trip advisor in 20 mins. It’s helped that 5 of us was diabetic.

Why is this accepted as a fact of life?

If you took your car to be repaired and they didn't fix it but cut the brake cables instead would we say oh well, that's what happens when you complain?

Or if your window cleaner did a rubbish job and you pointed it out, would it be ok for them to then put a brick through your double glazing?

Just for the record the staff and managed were incredibly helpful, and I got a discount (which I didn't ask for)

Mate I work in a restaurant and if any of our chefs were to do anything untoward with someone's food they'd be finding themselves jobless.

My advice to anyone who isn't happy with their meal regardless of where they are is to inform, rather than complain, if done nicely then the staff will bend over backwards to rectify any issues

I've worked in restaurants and there are a few people out there who complain for the stupidest things or just do it in the hope of a free meal. Saying that, I would complain if there was something I really wasn't happy about. But I would try and be assertive yet polite about it.

Same with the hotel where I work. So much easier to rectify a mistake there and then instead of a customer bitching about an easily resolved issue later on trip advisor!

Yes and they might even reduce your bill. I had that happen last time I sent food back.

If it's poor I'd send it back then leave - Regardless of who's right and who's wrong, no chef or his/her assistant like an 'awkward' diner, so if the food is sent back then somebody drops it on the floor, drops a bit of fag ash in it or spits in it, who's to know ? No thanks, I'd send it back then leave ….

Exactly.

And advising someone to walk out without paying is theft

If it’s not what you wanted you have every right to send it back... after all that’s why people go to restaurants

Personally I'd never do anything to a customers food if they complained it wasn't to their liking.

My professional standards are far too high, and the results if caught are not worth the risk

The worst thing I ever did, a customer ordered a blue steak, it got sent back as overcooked, as did the next I sent out.

You couldn't have served a bluer steak... It was spot on.

I could hear him shouting at the waitress, so I went out & politely asked him to refrain from abusing my staff. He called me an incompetent fool who wouldn't know a blue steak if it slapped me in the face.

I bit my tongue & promised him his next steak, which would be free of charge would be the bluest he'd ever seen.

His face when I returned a few minutes later, with a steak, painted with blue food colouring was priceless.

He stormed out, I received a round of applause from the other diners.
