Helping victims isn't a police priority. They need all available officers out on the roads to secure fines from motorists doing 1 mph above the speed limit

The police don't have the resources to deal with this type of crime. It's wrong but that's the way it is.

All ATM machines have cameras. Maybe they should tweet about this then apologise for the criminals doing what they do?

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Not sure it's really something to bash the police for, though.

Over the years, I've discovered a lot of CCTV systems are fakes.

Installed for deterrent value and nothing else.

By law, under the data protection act, anyone recording in a public place is required to register with the Information Commissioner and display a sign stating why images are being recorded and who the legal duty-holder is.

The give-away is when the sign does not contain the information required by law.

If you’d put your card back in and inputted your pin in reverse order it’s meant to alert them to respond instantly, hope they didn’t get away with too much

It sounds like the OP was looking for a camera looking down on to the cash point. Its body height looking out from the cash point.

Hold on, let me get this straight, we spend vast amounts of money in CCTV, have so many cameras that people have called us a big brother state out of 1984 and now you've said that a lot of them could be fakes.....

Can we put Skynet in charge, I feel like the machines might do a better job keeping order

4 times in a year? You sound like a perpetual victim. Most people don't have contact with the police 4 times in their lives. Yes, they can make mistakes, and they are under resourced but I bet that won't stop you calling them the next time. You just need to up your game as a victim, or be more careful....

To be fair, if there is no evidence and you don't know the identity of those involved then any sort of investigation would be almost impossible. Also, the value of your losses will be much less than the cost of an investigation... it would actually be cheaper for the police to just give you some cash than waste their resources on a fruitless investigation.

My personal experiences with the police have generally good, I think that in the most part they a fantastic job with ever decreasing resources.

That's a false equivalence logical fallacy. The criminal isn't going to be a one time criminal. The cost of all their crimes far outweighs the cost of catching them.

Yep. If someone stands close to me at the cash point or if I'm putting my pin into the machine in a shop I stop, turn and look at them until they back away. Unless I'm at the point of withdrawing the cash in which case I move round to block with my body.

It's difficult to do because we automatically respond to a tap on the shoulder or someone speaking to us but I try to bear that in mind and ignore stuff like that while I'm at the cash point. However nobody has any good reason to talk to you or stand at your shoulder while you're withdrawing money

Once I literally did this. I lived in a shared house and came home, found my locked room was broken into. They took my PS2, some porn magazine and DVDs. We'd had a new person move in a couple of weeks ago, idiot left their room open so I walked in and found my stuff in their wardrobe! Called the police. He was so dumb that he admitted to the police that I hadn't ever given him permission to use my stuff, (which would have explained why his finger prints were on them) and that the stuff was in his room, he just had no idea how it got there... with his finger prints on.

Arrested. Not prosecuted. You couldn't design a more clear cut case.

I'm very sorry this has happened to you. I'd be raging at the injustice and financial loss but probably also feeling very shaken as well in disbelief at being distracted like that in a split second.

Unfortunately though, as several previous posters have already pointed out, without anything to go on there's very little the police can realistically do especially with limited resources. This isn't about them being disinterested or lazy (as alluded to by some).

I would, however, be taking issue with the bank if they don't have CCTV for the cashpoint. I also thought this was mandatory, both to help their customers in the event of a crime by providing evidence and also to (hopefully) deter at least *some* of those who are tempted to steal. I'd feel they hadn't taken all reasonable precautions to help protect their customers in this instance and would certainly want them to explain why they'd failed to do this.

Thieving bastard is the true criminal here. But is griping about it to friends and on fab the maximum effort you will give? Police and all emergency services are stretched to the limit and still being cost cut. Therefore I'd anyone wants this to change get voting for people who will change it and if they don't, start lobbying them to do their job.

But some may hint it's not worth it, the effort won't result in anything.....oh hang on. Aren't we moaning about people like that??

So what lines of enquiry do you think the police have. Did you get a good look at the thief? Can you describe them, the direction they went in, any vehicle they may have got into, can you say if they wore gloves or not. If the answer to all those questions is no then the police cannot just look into their magical crystal ball and solve your crime. Sending a patrol to see you there and then serves no purpose at all and it’s a waste of a resource. Maybe you should be more vigilant at cash machines, maybe it is you who is the useless one, the police arn’t miracle workers.

They do have the resources but if there are no solvability factors, lines of enquiry in other words then it’s pointless deploying a patrol to get the same end result. The crime will be recorded but if the evidence isn’t there to investigate then nothing can be done.

The police lady on the phone wouldn’t know if the bank had cctv covering the machine, only the bank can answer that. She would be referring to council operated cctv which the police have live access to, if it’s not there that doesn’t make them useless, it just means the council don’t have a camera in that location.

Hows about maybe not 1mph over limit but having a fine for exhaust being over noisy on motorbike and italic font on plate... as the police were having a safety drive regarding bikers... pulled in on mass and bike scrutineered and any minor faults were fined.. not mot faults either... tgey didnt pull one car in even tho theres how many with illegal spacing on plates and rattling exhausts. If they treated any other minority group the way we get treated there would be uproar... so maybe not 1mph but they have resources for shit like that

So sorry to hear you've been robbed, can't have been a nice experience for you. Without any line of enquiry to follow the police are rather helpless, that's not really their fault. I'm surprised to hear there is no CCTV as I kind of assumed all cashpoints would be covered? Perhaps channel your frustration towards getting that cash point covered by CCTV?

Personally I won't use high Street cashpoints, wherever possible I use the lobby style machines where you use your card to gain access.

It’s not a bobby on the other end of your phone, it’s a civilian call handler who is trained to establish any lines of enquiry, if there are none, such as witnesses, cctv, obvious forensic evidence at scene such as blood or tools left behind etc then there is nothing to investigate unfortunately. Gone are the days when a bobby attends every crime. You can thank our government for that.

But how can they check local cctv etc if the culprit hasn’t been described, who are they looking for. The culprit could walk past ten shops with cctv but without a description then he’s just a man walking down the road. And in most cases those enquiries are still done, just not immediately. The crime will always be allocated to a bobby for investigation and if there are any enquiries to be done they get done, if not it gets filed. Just because a patrol doesn’t attend the scene there and then doesn’t mean nothing gets done, it just didn’t warrant a patrol at scene that’s all because there’s nothing to be gained from it.

"Helping victims isn't a police priority. They need all available officers out on the roads to secure fines from motorists doing 1 mph above the speed limit

Don’t believe everything you read in the daily mail ffs. Show me a man who has been done for going 1mph over the limit and I’ll show my arse in Harrods window.

If they treated any other minority group the way we get treated there would be uproar... so maybe not 1mph but they have resources for shit like that"

I’m a biker myself mate, havn’t been pulled once in 5 years. Unfortunately italics on your plate don’t confirm and neither does your noisy exhaust. I suspect they were responding to complaints from locals if it was a regular gathering of a large group of bikers. Traffic police don’t investigate crime tho so no crime went uninvestigated as a result of them doing this op, but maybe a few locals were happy they did something about their complaints. Can’t please everybody can you.

Had over 2.5k worth of tools nicked out of my van 2 weeks ago. The police didn't care, wouldn't even send anybody out.

Last week I had to headbutt someone in self defence, 2 police cars turn up at my house. Absolute joke ?? ?? ??

the police can't make any money from sorting out this crime so it's just not worth their efforts I don't blame the coppers on the street, they're just doing what their bosses tell them.

Are you able to tweet? If you feel a little upset, are you able to show your feelings and go and have a cry in the safe room? Are you able to park on yellow lines to go shopping? Are you able to empathise with criminals whilst ignoring the victims? Can you dance, so that when you're on duty at a Pride march you can show off to the cameras?

If you can answer yes to any of the above you're qualified to be a police person.

"So sorry to hear this, hope your ok OP.

The police don't have the resources to deal with this type of crime. It's wrong but that's the way it is.

They do have the resources but if there are no solvability factors, lines of enquiry in other words then it’s pointless deploying a patrol to get the same end result. The crime will be recorded but if the evidence isn’t there to investigate then nothing can be done.

I don't know where this crime occurred.. most banks I come across or visit are in amongst other shops , business premises ,maybe they have CCTV, maybe someone saw something.. maybe if someone turned up they might collect some informationg that might lead somewhere... .if nothing else it gives Joe public a sense that the criminal ain't got free reign on the streets and the police give a fuck..cos at the moment it feels like they don't.

Just because a patrol doesn’t attend the scene there and then doesn’t mean nothing gets done, it just didn’t warrant a patrol at scene that’s all because there’s nothing to be gained from it."

Maybe someone saw it maybe if they turned up that person might who saw something still be in the shop bank etc ...days later here's one thing for sure that person who may have seen something ain't going to be there..

As I said if nothing else it gives Joe public a sense the criminals ain't acting with impunity .. it gives Joe public a sense the police are bothered .. a crime number just reaffirms the belief folk have that nowt's done.

Ohhh man I'm sorry dude.

I think the police are just too stretched to be able to do much without enough evidence. I had a similar case 10 years ago.

Most of them won't do you if you go 1mph over the limit. They've let me off for going at 37 in a 30 zone, I'm normally careful but have a high pressure job and was an open road, and I get told I'm too slow a lot.

But the cynical bit in me wonders op if you lamped that guy who nicked your money then the police would quickly turn up in force

I also have a rasping exhaust. If I did get pulled for that I will say I'd love to have it fixed, can you arrange and pay for me to get it done?

Not sure it's really something to bash the police for, though.

Over the years, I've discovered a lot of CCTV systems are fakes.

Installed for deterrent value and nothing else.

By law, under the data protection act, anyone recording in a public place is required to register with the Information Commissioner and display a sign stating why images are being recorded and who the legal duty-holder is.

The give-away is when the sign does not contain the information required by law."

That's not true....what about the hundreds of thousands of car dashcams that are now being used?

If you're doing 1 mph over the speed limit then you're breaking the law - simple! "

And tbh you usually only get done if your ten percent over the limit and certainly in our area its not actual police officers that concentrate on speeding they have camera vans manned by officials but not PCs

The cps guideline is 10% + 2 and as it’s the cps who authorise charges then that’s the standard measurement. Even if you get a ticket for under that you can opt for a court hearing but it won’t get that far as it wouldn’t get past the cps.

They are not useless, they are just busy.

I know having your money nicked is awful and very important to you. However it is a low priority crime.

Just to put things into perspective.... a police officer was nearly shot last week by a criminal whilst doing routine duties. This is why low priority takes longer.

It does, nothing chad changed just because a story appeared in the papers. The same story has appeared at least three times in the last year. One chief con made a comment but it hasn’t been implemented and it won’t. 1mph over the limit doesn’t allow for errors in the calibration of speedometers in both private vehicles and police equipment. The 10% + 2 does.

There is no allowances and never has been. The rumoured 10% + 1 came from a guideline to Chief Inspectors but has no legal standing. I know two people who have received a fixed penalty for exceeding the limit by 1mph, on in a 20 zone and one on the motorway.

Car manufacturers always make Speedos read higher than the speed you are travelling, it protects them from the risk if being sued if you get a ticket. If you get a speeding ticket, you generally THINK you're going even faster than you actually are.

Many people dislike the police for giving them speeding tickets...

Also people vilify them for dancing at public events or posting messages on twitter or just showing they're human. Maybe they'd prefer them to be cold and fearsome, will that encourage some public support?

The police aren't allowed to act human though. Dancing and tweeting isn't acting human, using common sense discretion is acting human. The police has literally had their powersof discretion stripped back by politicians and their leadership that they are tasked to act like robots. Because you know that if 2% of police were abusing their discretion then the logical thing is to take discretion away from 100% of police.

Why do people feel they can criticise the emergency services for not being unable to do their job because of lack of resources?

Try doing their job before being so critical. Try being unarmed and confronting an armed terrorist. Or turn up to help an injured person who is so pissed they walked out in front of a car and then starts to attack the paramedic who is helping him. The only emergency services who don’t get criticised are the fire brigade because they’re fit.

Maybe we should start taking our frustration out on the shelf stacker in the supermarket because my preferred brand of coffee beans are out of stock.

PS which cash point do you go to OP?

Are you able to tweet? If you feel a little upset, are you able to show your feelings and go and have a cry in the safe room? Are you able to park on yellow lines to go shopping? Are you able to empathise with criminals whilst ignoring the victims? Can you dance, so that when you're on duty at a Pride march you can show off to the cameras?

If you can answer yes to any of the above you're qualified to be a police person.

Yet sadly another individual who I’m sure when the chips are down and really is in the sh*t would have no hesitation contacting the Police for help!!!

I guess a poor experience in the past has lead to an ignorant arrogant misconception (perhaps he even broken the law and was punished) - I’m sure that was the Police Services fault as well just saying

Wrong. I've never broken the law. And of course I would contact the police for help - I pay the lazy fuckers through taxes, so why shouldn't I use that service or complain about it if it's shit?

Exactly as I said ignorant and arrogant “Police Officers pay taxes also” just like you the “I’ve never broken the law” self - perhaps if they are so lazy then they deserve beds at night to sleep in like the fire service, and if they have to deal with a call then they can bitch and moan in the same way. They are certainly not lazy due to tiredness of being able to have a second job have some respect “Fireman shameful” "

So, you're ok just to pay out money for a service and not get it? Sucker

Tell you what, you give me lots of money to come and mend your washing machine - I won't turn up, but will keep your money anyway. Would you complain?

I think it was the police federation that said (my memory isn't what it was )I think 40% of police constables now had second jobs.

Yeah coz the police don’t respond to any calls at all so they? They don’t deal with multiple murders on the same day, countless assaults, mugging, stabbings, ra*es, deaths, child abuse, missing persons, the list is endless. There is such a thing as graded response, it makes sense and it makes best use of resources. How would you feel if they didn’t respond to your beat up old granny because they were at scene dealing with a damaged plant pot. Get real fella, stop being so bitter because you’re not happy in your job.

Firemen have been bitter militant fuckers. And most are overweight middle aged men, not the fit calendar gym goers they’d have you believe."

Couldn't agree more Well, I would If I actually knew any firefighters, or had anything whatsoever to do with them.

Whether I’m ok about paying taxes is irrelevant because everyone who works has to pay it regardless, taking someone’s money as a tradesman and providing no service is theft/deception “paying that tradesman in the first place is a choice”

PS - I know it was a hypothetical question

Ok oh wise one, murders ought to be solved with 24 hours eh. In Answer to your question, no, I’m not a policeman, either on or off duty. Let me give you an example of why things take time. Take a run of the mill drink driver, they take a blood sample and release the driver on bail. It takes 8 weeks for the blood result to come back from the lab who tests it, they are a private company, out of police hands. What I’m saying is, a good investigation takes time and mostly it’s out of the hands of the police, things get sent off and they come back when they come back.

Don’t forget lack of funding, shortages of police officers, all those officers off sick due to injuries and assaults whilst in the line of duty. And the sheer amount of crimes being reported.

(No I’m not a police officer, I just love one)

Excellent story, but why should I give a shit how long it takes for them to process a d*unk driver? That's their problem not mine. I pay them to uphold the law in all respects, as do you, as does everyone and I just don't think the ordinary citizen on the street (like the OP) gets the service we pay for.

Education, health, law etc arent commodities you can guarantee results on.

You made a sweeping statement that all of those working in that field are lazy.

By the very nature of their job they're at a disadvantage straight off in being able to achieve results.

Eg

Man takes cash out of ATM and is robbed whilst doing so. Police respond asap and take 20 minutes to get there. No witnesses, no valuable forensic leads or other evidence. Apparently they're lazy and incompetent on thus occasion.

You seem like a relatively articulate and intelligent person on the forums but I can't help but feel there's an element of personal prejudice behind your remark, as opposed to a factually based debate.

Are the soldiers of the 6th airborne brigade lazy because they failed at Arnheim?

They are certainly not lazy due to tiredness of being able to have a second job have some respect “Fireman shameful”

So, you're ok just to pay out money for a service and not get it? Sucker

Tell you what, you give me lots of money to come and mend your washing machine - I won't turn up, but will keep your money anyway. Would you complain?

Yeah coz the police don’t respond to any calls at all so they? They don’t deal with multiple murders on the same day, countless assaults, mugging, stabbings, ra*es, deaths, child abuse, missing persons, the list is endless. There is such a thing as graded response, it makes sense and it makes best use of resources. How would you feel if they didn’t respond to your beat up old granny because they were at scene dealing with a damaged plant pot. Get real fella, stop being so bitter because you’re not happy in your job.

And yes, the police do all those things you've mentioned. Just very poorly, slowly and inefficiently

Excellent story, but why should I give a shit how long it takes for them to process a d*unk driver? That's their problem not mine. I pay them to uphold the law in all respects, as do you, as does everyone and I just don't think the ordinary citizen on the street (like the OP) gets the service we pay for."

Because you’re a day dreamer who has an unrealistic expectation (due to lack of understanding presumably) and clearly misinformed, like I said ignorant and arrogant.

You’re just a ten a penny 100 yard hero who brow beats the police service with very little but a speculative opinion as someone else put it

Are you a policeman currently on duty and on Fab? Because that really wouldn't surprise anyone. What makes you think I have a job? I retired early because I worked hard and made lots of money. I'm very happy thanks, you?

But you weren't a police officer, so doubtful you're truly qualified to pass anything other than a speculative opinion?

So you don't think people should expect to get the service that they pay for? Why?

But the truth is actually right there in the OP. Man takes cash out of ATM and is robbed whilst doing so. Police don't respond at all and a civilian call taker gives out the usual tired excuses as to why the police will do nothing. And no, the soldiers of the 6th airborne brigade weren't lazy because they failed at Arnheim. They failed because they were ill-prepared and not fully re-kitted after operation Tonga. The leadership was poor and they were outnumbered and outgunned by the German defenders. Any force attacking entrenched troops needs at least 3 times the number for the assault to have a chance at success.

"What would you expect them to do? There is no line of enquiry that they can investigate.

Id have happily followed him but they didnt want me doing that"

I’m confused by this part. Was the person who robbed you waiting while you made the call? I’d have thought they’d be busy fleeing the scene of the crime?

The main thing is that you are OK. And as others have said, frustrating as it obviously is, in that sort of situation there realistically isn’t a lot they could do.

""Yes they're all wankers" - Seriously? Has the Jeremy Kyle show finished??

Can you imagine how bad this country would be without them. Total lawlessness would not be pretty.

If you're doing 1 mph over the speed limit then you're breaking the law - simple!

That 10%+2 rule doesn't stand now.

No it doesn't, I got done at 34 in a 30, so once again public knowledge is wrong. Its an advisory that many forces, Northamptonshire amongst them, ignore.

Cal

----

If you read my post you’ll see that I said that even if you did get a ticket for beynder under the cps guideline you can request a court hearing but it won’t get past the cps, so no court hearing. Your friends probably failed the old attitude test hence the tickets being issued but I doubt very much they were upheld."

They were both issued by computers, there was no opportunity for them to act like an arse (both can be)

In answer to your first question, there are too many criminals for the available jail spaces. Obviously.

Your second question, I haven't said the police do absolutely nothing, all of the time. sometimes they do actually do a small amount of work, you know - just for show, to let the gullible believe they're doing a good job, but if you're happy with that - fair play to you ps, where do you park your car? I'm guessing I could just steal it, and you wouldn't bother reporting it because you wouldn't want to bother the hard-done-by coppers, and even if you did, a civilian operator would just tell you that they can't help because they're all tired out from dancing at the Pride Rally.

I really don't understand why people demand so little from the police. How will things ever get better unless something is said?

Amazing really , when the police do a great job in protecting & assisting the public ie recent activity of terrosim they’re the best thing since sliced bread ,then when they don’t do what a particular member of public want they’re useless they can’t do right for doing wrong or damed if you do damed if you don’t . Just my opinion

I see you’re using the defence for the 6th airborne div poor leadership and poor resources, but can’t see that is the same problem the police has.

I hope you never have to go to A&E and have to wait longer than 3 hours to be seen otherwise you might have to yell at them for being lazy underpaid and overworked fuckers.

Why?

Actually, I was taken to A&E just the other week. I pay for quite an expensive private medical plan, and when I got to the A&E department there was an ambulance waiting for me with a doctor on board who treated me en-route to the private hospital. I paid for this service, and I got it. that's what I expect when I pay for things with money that I've earned. Don't you? And I do see the relevant comparison between the 2 cases, but the battle for Arnhem was over 70 years ago. The same crap shouldn't still be happening.

Except you haven't really answered the question have you?

Ineffective leadership decisions, poor logistics and against the odds are your motivations for the failed operation ( nice use of military doctrine off Google in relation to entrenched positions).

Flip that to the modern police service facing the same issues, are they all lazy too because they face similiar problems albeit in very different environments?

I'm not advocating that the service you get is perfect, but to suggest the reason is because officers are lazy isn't really valid.

"Amazing really , when the police do a great job in protecting & assisting the public ie recent activity of terrosim they’re the best thing since sliced bread ,then when they don’t do what a particular member of public want they’re useless they can’t do right for doing wrong or damed if you do damed if you don’t . Just my opinion "

It’s enough to make you think that making sweep generalisations based on isolated anecdotal cases is a crazy thing to do.

I went by taxi I paid him to take me to the hospital which was closest, and he did. Had he taken me to the nearest bagel bakery, I wouldn't have paid him because he didn't do his job adequately. But I'm forced to pay for what I see is an inadequate police service. Why should I not complain? There's too much "acceptable" inefficiency these days, and everybody seems to have an excuse, that's only validated by other lazy half-wits. I don't accept that, and neither should anyone with any gumption. And if I do have a "chip on my shoulder and a big (whatever it was) up my arse, I will pay someone to remove them and expect them to do an exemplary job!

So not an emergency then.

Out of interest what job do you do?

A public service is just that, for everyone. When you pay privately you are paying a lot more for just you.

Why?

How did you get to the A&E to start off with though? I’m assuming not by NHS ambulance. Probably your chauffeur then, which probably accounts for why you never got a speeding ticket.

How do you know it wasn't an emergency? Just because I got a taxi? I know my own medical condition, and I know how much time I have to manage it before it becomes a genuine emergency. I used a taxi because at that stage, I knew I didn't need an ambulance. As to your second question, I stopped working 4 years ago. I was an engineer and designer of medical equipment, now I own the company and somebody else runs it for me. Any more questions?

""Yes they're all wankers" - Seriously? Has the Jeremy Kyle show finished??

Can you imagine how bad this country would be without them. Total lawlessness would not be pretty.

If you're doing 1 mph over the speed limit then you're breaking the law - simple!

That 10%+2 rule doesn't stand now.

No it doesn't, I got done at 34 in a 30, so once again public knowledge is wrong. Its an advisory that many forces, Northamptonshire amongst them, ignore.

Did you opt for a court hearing or just pay the fine that came through the post?"

I went to court, and got a, lecture from the magistrate about it being a guideline and that I had still broken the law, just about the only ones that matter in the UK right now.

At some point in this thread op I'm sure you've offended the poor fragile sensibilities of the people who robbed you. As a card carrying lefty, I think it only right that you apologise to them for causing them offense. You clearly ignored the deeper context which justified their actions as being in response to the capitalist system in a post industrial information age and the repression of the working classes through the control of the meta narrative. A school boy error. Tut tut

That these poor souls lowered themselves to the humiliation of having to rob you is the true tragedy here. So perhaps as well as an apology you can set up a direct deposit for them so that in future they don't need to go to such degrading lengths to get your money off you.

In future think about others! Tsk

Exactly. Criminals are people too. It's bad enough that they have to commit these crimes. But to have to suffer the castigation that ensues afterwards... Well shame on you. Have you not thought of how much colour criminals bring to our culture?

These poor people are the real victims here. Overlooked and maligned for their witty ironic contemporary take on the ancient tradition of thievery. Think about how upset they must feel. Perhaps we could collect some money together for some kind of crime-moralising-safe shelter they can go to with state of the art home theater, multiplayer gaming facilities, and ergonomic memory foam sofas? We wouldn't want them getting back ache would we

Don’t blame the 5-0 for you not having the common sense to allow someone to rob you at a cash point.

If there’s no witnesses and no CCTV it’s their word against yours. I don’t want my tax money wasted arresting them for CPS to decide not to charge them anyway as there’s no chance in hell of securing a victory.

Chalk this one down to “the big E” and don’t let it happen again.

Oh and I’d have chinned the pair of them. No CCTV rememebr?

I've seen a lot of comments on this thread about getting what you pay for from the police.

To put this in context:

The police costs each of the U.K's 70 million citizens roughly £200 per year, or about £4 per week... Do you really think you're not getting value for money?

Very good comment. The people who complain about the police should do it in person to the nearest police officer or police station. Let’s face it if they got a poor service anywhere else they’d complain to the manager and not on a forum where they are protected.

Do people criticise the fire service every time a load of kids die in a house fire or the ambulance service every time somebody dies in a car crash or other accident and say how useless they are and they’re all wankers? No they don’t because it’s a sad fact of life that they can’t save everybody no matter how hard they try.

My point is, the police can’t possible be at the scene of every crime or solve every crime either but they work damned hard and they are the most multi skilled of the emergency services. The fire service put out fires, ambulance crews treat sick and injured people. The police do all of that and much more besides, they have to be mental health practitioners, social workers, investigators, crime scene managers, traffic managers, evidence gatherers the list is endless and it’s a thankless job. They’re the only service that can’t say no, the fire service and ambulance service routinely pass they’re work on to the police who have to attend and deal with whatever they find and then sit and wait for an ambo to arrive an hour later or the fire service who had asked them to first aid the job. Give them a break, people who criticise really have no idea what they’re talking about and should have the intelligence that sending a patrol to a crime which is impossible to solve is not a good use of resources. It doesn’t make them useless or wankers, it makes them realists.

Very subjective unless you’re going to provide stats on just how often someone calls the police and has the matter resolved to their satisfaction. We’re lucky enough to not have required their services for quite a few years, and should that change, we’re entitled to have an opinion like the OP, on the quality of that service. This would be likely reflected in which political party we pen our cross by when it’s time to vote. As for suggesting one wouldn’t complain at the police station in person because they somehow feel protected on here is ridiculous, get a grip! It’s not like they’re anything to be feared. Let’s hope the next time you need to call them that they put in an outstanding performance for you, and if they don’t (and according to the latest stats they probably won’t) that you’ll put your money where your mouth is and shrug your shoulders whilst simultaneously thanking them for doing a stellar job anyway

There are @43 police forces in the UK. To write them all off as useless jobsworths is ignorance in the extreme. Certainly they have their share of tosspots. In an organization that large, what do you expect? Most perform their job, a pretty much thankless one, to the best of their ability. On which note, don't forget they are drawn from the society that they serve. Society gets the policing it deserves, as they are a reflection of that society.

There was one, not many, but I’m sure there have been others. You’ll always get your bad apples in any organisation but the police are very good at routing them out and rather than brush it under the carpet as many people suggest they are publicly shamed and any sentence is doubled due to the fact they are in the position of trust and rightly so.

"I've been a volunteer for the metropolitan police in my home town.

Supping tea at West Wickham Station most were until the radio called

Volunteers ran the station.

I saw Bromley Station and loved it there.

I have seen good and bad officers.

"

Typical special Constable, full of your own self worth and importance when the sad fact is that regular officers hate being paired up with specials so tend to only leave the nick when they have to to avoid being stuck in a car with somebody they’d rather not be. As for volunteers running the station, absolute nonsense. How can they do that on their 4 hours per week.
