I don’t use Instagram but do you have their telephone numbers or other contact details stored on your phone?

Not sure how the link is made between the two sites otherwise? Email address?

Many big sites collate tons of data upon people, including what they may buy or exchange elsewhere. Some sites will observe your internet activities even whilst not logged in to their site - Facebook, for example. Many sites use email addresses and phone numbers or vice versa, for security - so it's easy for dots to be joined up and connections made.

Burner, shag no phones and alternative email addresses, as well as using a separate web browser for some sites, like Fab, can limit what other sites get to know about you. Clearing cookies is an alternative.

Consider sites that have your phone number as a likely culprit and you may narrow it down by considering what information has been shared between you and the other contact, as that's the simplest way they've made the connection.

Assume that all sites know more about you than you have told them and potentially using search engines that don't track you too.

Cookies! If Mr N looks at a holiday destination on our pc the next time I look at Facebook an advert for that holiday pops up.

I don't know what privacy settings are like on instagram but it's worthwhile having all social media accounts locked down as tightly as possible.

With cookies, you could use a browser that deletes all of your cookies when you close it. Google searches will result in advertising for related products after too - showing up on many sites, including fbook.

I think it's worthwhile using more than one web browser, so you keep some levels of limited privacy. F,books cookies have been notorious for monitoring you, even when you are not logged in to their site.

Overall these companies amass and process lots about us,always trying to make lots of assumptions about us too, including who we know
