mis-types and auto corrects leads cock leeds

So I dropped off asleep this afternoon.zzz..as you might after a long week.. and there was a program on the TV (don't know the name see reason above) about a family and there spending on food and unhealthy eating that was about 3/4 way through ..I started watching where two teenagers were cooking and neither knew how to make mashed potatoes.end of show if they adopted the new regime of eating and cooking they'd save £243.00 a week..

.I don't blame the kids as such.. what the f@@K are the parents teaching / showing kids these days ..

I was shown by my mother how to cook I'm not a chef by any stretch but I cook for my family any life skills I didn't have I was shown when I joined the forces..

I know some countries still have national service

1) it'd help with obesity crisis the physical nature of the forces.

2. It'd teach them life skills.

3. The discipline would do many of them a world of good.

What makes you think the armed forces want them? Budget cuts means leaner services...they can pick and choose physically healthy individuals who are capable of being trained to do some highly specialised roles.

Northampton Somewhere

With kids having to stay in education until they're 18 and the lack of decent jobs available to them when they leave, I think that's quite a good idea OP.

I wasn't trained to cook when I did military service.

The only thing I was trained from the moment I arrived to the moment I left was how to kill people. How to shoot them, how to stab them, how to blow them up, how to give their position so other people could murder them.

All I learned about myself is that physical and mental pressure mean nothing to me. For those that are sensitive to emotions, the training didn't make them tougher, it just made them more stressed.

I do think schools should force home economics on both boys and girls, and it should focus on saving money, cooking healthy, home budgets, because its a life skill most people dont pick up at home from a loving parent who does everything for them, and who probably never learnt how to do it themselves properly either.

I love the programme where families spend obscene amounts of money on food.

And Greg Wallace tells them " you can save loads if you switch to own brands, and chop up your own carrots"

And they thank him

It is so easy learning how to cook basic meals, this is just mostly idleness disguised with.... 'take your pick'

I spend very little on food and eat meat every day.

I buy 25 chicken breasts, 2lbs of mince, 4 burgers, 2lbs of diced steak, 2 turkey fillets for 40 euro.

Lasts a month, so 10 euro a week, then I get a bag of muesli, 2 cartons of protein milk, bag of rice or quinoa, then fruit and veg like a bag of carrots for 79 cent, maybe apples, pears, I like small peelable oranges. I sometimes get some sauce for the chicken like peri peri sauce.

All in all it comes to 20-25 euro a week. 18-23 sterling.

I was only a youngster when I watched my dad prepareing breakfast alright not always healthy meals by todays standards but its these times I enjoyed watching the bacon come off the grill thou he used a fair amount of lard in the pan to luckily lard went out of fashion somewhat between then and growing up more vegetable oils then, but I can still see the black pudding, tomatoes, fried eggs, mushrooms, sausage, sweetbreads at times, he,d cook he always made sure I never went without in that respect if you enjoy your food then the rest should follow thou I must admit I did,nt do much in my teens in the way of cooking it was only later in life I did,nt mind getting the roasting tray out thou I think guidance is a great thing at times.

No it wouldn’t, I never cooked on the army past boiling a boil in the bag ration pack or making a brew. All eating is through a central cook house. chips with everything.

Obesity? Well the unhealthy diet, kamikaze drinking heavy smoking and very physically hard physical training almos garuntees most squaddies waist line explodes when they leave. Also there are a lot of knee and back problems as a result of carting heavy kit around. Fights and squabbles over petty shot were common.

Life skills. I left not knowing how to write a check, get a Morgage, budget (I was fed if I blew a months salary and all bed and board was pre deducted)

I could manage people by shouting, being rude and sarcastic and punching people who’d fucked up in the head was a thing.

Dissaplin? Well I could look smart and martch, I could show up 5 minutes early, because if your not five minutes early ......

And I was taught the importance of aggression. Shown how to effortlessly use weapons, prepared mentally to kill.

So no national service in the military is not a good idea. A work and education scheme is. Get the fuckers cleaning hospitals, picking litter and clearing up the countryside.

To those that say that everyone should be taught home economics (or food technology as it is called in the 21st century) in school, I disagree. This is for a number of reasons.

1. Where is all the extra funding going to come from to fit out new kitchens in schools? Health and safety dictates 24 in a food tech room and most schools have 32 in a class. There aren't many schools that have more than one food teach classroom available.

2. There is already a teaching recruitment and retention crisis. How do you propose that we find extra teachers to teach these skills.

3. When are parents going to take responsibility for the children they have? Is it not time to start to realise that teachers and schools can only do so much in the 6 hours a day that they have with children.

The supermarkets are selling 'mushroom mince'

For about £1.50 a pack

Probably the equivalent of about four mushrooms in a pack.

I agree unless your into good salads, a meal out the oven is second to none.. but Its also nice to get away from the stove if poss, thats why I have a lot of ready meals too but then the price can go up on your spend, so I mix it up a bit and yes you do do well on your food spend in fact very well I,m perhaps a glutton..

Oh yawn...that's a very small percentage of the military.

Many are trained in mechanical and engineering skills, working as a team, medical skills, logistics etc etc.

Usually the people who spout bollocks about killing combatants are a small minority or Walter mittys.

Recruit them, not necessarily combative roles but support roles, provide them with life skills and qualifications in return for service. An incentive for those unable to find employment to get out of the trap of no hope?

My old man is always on about how the kids today could do with national service , and the older I get the more I tend to agree with him .

Not just to teach them to cook , but to teach them some meaning in their life . Teamwork , discipline , consequences , exercise , commitment , belonging to something .

And of course , cleaning , appearance , ironing , and learning a trade .

It’s got to better than the gang warfare going on out there at the moment surely ?

But why is it the place of the military to teach these things?

Surely as a society we should understand the importance of these things and people should have learned the importance long before they leave school and get forced in to the military?

I think there are still enough people around who remember national service as a positive experience . So it makes sense to use it as an example of what may give an answer to the youth of today and their shortcomings .

Blaming society , schools and parents is a waste of time . It’s a namby pamby society we live in today , and a reality check is what’s needed . National service would provide this .

Furthermore there are plenty of worthwhile jobs that could be undertaken within the national service . Like renovation and road repairs , here in the UK , and endless help with disasters all over the world . Call it national service but not necessarily military perhaps ?

I really enjoyed the army, in the infantry, but I don’t see the point in National military service in anything. Nowadays you would be denying it as a carea to those who want that in the corps and traded rolls. Also I’d rather have my tradesmen and support doing a full 3 years (actually it was usually 5 with trades and all others who joined as junior soldiers at 16) with guys in charge of them having 10 - 22 years service and experience.

Proffesional, volunteer soldiers are better trained, motivated and effective.

What percentage of the old national service army was in jail, absent or sick by comparison?

By all means do a compulsory hospital service or something to teach a work ethic.

But putting a load of millenials through a 1 year or 2 year national service program is ridiculous.

National service would be the death of the armed forces. It’s bad enough the lizards that are coming in lately, let alone someone who didn’t want to be there.

It would be awful for the Armed Forces. This shower of a government would probably be happy to use the conscripts as cheap replacements for professional soldiers. Given the whole army can fit in Wembley stadium. The army is now so small it needs to have a defined qauitative edge.

Our soldiers should be prized assets. They should be paid like bankers and selected and trained like Spartans. Not paid like Barista's and seen as a drain on resources by petty penny pinching bureaucracy and incompetent ministers. If the government start trying to sell national service as a good thing. Think what their motives would really be, saving money and defence on the cheap would be my guess.
