Got to say though, sometimes you need to be a grown up and use your noggin... it’s not hard to see how some things will upset people. There is only you that can decide whether it’s worth it or not.

It is but humour has changed a lot over the last 20 years or so significantly.

It's a debate that usually ends up with someone being labelled, another offended and someone else proclaiming to represent another, outraged at something said.

We all know when somethings deeply offensive, but contextualising words seems irrelevant these days.

I think we're foolish and unrealistic if we think all we hear and read should be to our liking, and that attitude won't prepare us for reality.

Yes of course it is there are plenty of things that can be joked about without being in the slightest bit offensive to anyone.

The offence factor only comes about when joking about contentious things and sometimes that's in *how* the joke is conveyed and not necessarily the content - there are of course things that will always be offensive no matter which way you look at them and are not joking matters at all e.g. particularly racist jokes, or ones about animal cruelty etc - but as Babs said it comes down to common sense, maturity and a level of intelligence and decorum, as well as delivery to know when something is ok to joke about and when it's not.

I take exception to your insinuation that people are easily offended. If you keep taking the mick and poking fun then everyone has the right to take offense. I find it offensive to say we take offense on behalf of others too easily and it makes me very very angry to constantly see people pilloried purely for being angry for no reason.

Be aware of your audience, otherwise you're just busking to the masses and that can be both a waste of time and dangerous. I find a Hello Kitty Mask helps to ward off unwanted words.

Will be checking this point out next week at the Edinburgh Fringe. Have seen the thresholds change over the years, this year there seems a huge number of LGBT (the official fringe terminology) shows and far more women. Been fortunate to see some very funny people over the years.

Last year Sara Pascoe was very good (also extremely attractive close up) and made insect (can’t use real word) jokes which did cause a few audible gasps and a few wriggling in their seats. . I think that the context and delivery makes a huge difference.

Those types of shows will offend some, but hopefully the audience will know the type of humour they have and avoid them if it's not their thing.

On a public forum like this then yes there will always be someone who is offended. This is because we are a diverse group of people with our own views and experiences.

As I said on a different thread earlier people have different triggers. Just because it is ok to say a joke to one single white female aged 40 from Oxford, doesn't mean that the same joke is acceptable to another single white female aged 40 from Oxford.

No. The best way to address it is be prepared for the fallout if you do upset or offend someone and also the possibility that you may inadvertently over step the line between having a laugh and going too far. Days have gone where only the loudest voices are heard and that people feel they can't speak up.

I think if someone says they're offended about something you say about them or a group they belong to then, justifiably or not, they probably are offended.

On the other hand I wouldn't take too much notice of those who claim to be offended on someone else's behalf or who claim others are or might be offended.

It's easy, you just have to be a card carrying member of the subsection of society you're offending. Black guys tell black guy jokes, disabled guys tell disabled jokes, women tell sexist jokes, fat slobs tell fat slob guy jokes etc etc.

What I'm wondering is that now Johnny Vegas has lost a lot of weight, and his usual "schtick" is fat slob material, will he now be accused of body shaming fat people unless he changes his routines?

I spoke to Bernard Manning at his club a couple of times as we had a mutual friend. I really didn’t want to like him, but he was pleasant , funny and intelligent. Jimmy Carr is very crude but takes time to speak to everyone after the gig.

People will take offence for and on behalf of anything and anybody.

Times are getting more PC when you think subconciously "is that acceptable?"

It does seem to be okay if your the minority and take the piss out yourself / your minority. So for example trans folk are likely to be less enraged by other trans folk taking the piss out of trans folk.

Race, Gender and Sexuality are how you are born, its not a choice though you can choose to act on it.

No one is born Religious, thats a result of indoctrination or teaching, a belief system so it should be fair game along with Politicians for piss taking.
