If it's about Raheem Sterling, I think he's absolutely right - we have some very mediocre players that get put on a pedastal - they all happen to be white, and some as good, or better players that get very little attention from the media and or the public, that happen to be black. Sadly, it's no coincedence.

It's more likely than in a sky blue shirt he's a decent player.

But when he puts on a white one he's site.

They're they only relavent colours, not his skin.

It's not racist to say he can't score for England, he can't. It's not racist to say he has a weird tatoo either, though that really isn't anybody's concern other than his own.

It's the ferocity of criticism that I see as racist. All criticism should have been directed at the manager, not at a player that was imo trying hard - how do you expect the guy to up his game having received such hostility from the very people who are supposed to be supporting him?

I was surprised by his comments when I first heard them. But then i fact checked what he was saying and I agree. There were some stories I hadn't heard of, like apparently it's newsworthy that Sterling went to Primark what the hell were they reporting that for?

He is shit in an England shirt though.

If the criticism is related to his football ability it's not racist.

If the criticism is prefaced with a pejorative term related to his colour it is.

Really interesting thoughts all. I personally don't think it is racist in the slightest. Having said that, there will be people that are racist criticising him.

I thought he was rubbish at the WC and way before that too. The stats suggest that too. Sorry to say this but in a City team he looks a great player due to the quality around him. Put him in the England side and he suffers due to a total lack of creative and world class players.

Exactly. At first I was like 'no ian he was just shit at the world cup'. To be fair, that's because they don't play the style that suits him or the same position he plays at City. He's not a bad player, but he shouldn't be starting for England because it's like putting a fish in a tree climbing race.

But then I looked at some of the stories that have been written about him off the field and I can't see where they are coming from at all. I do think they want to paint him to fit a negative stereotype of a young man whose money has gone to his head and I don't think it's fair.

So how do you explain mo saleh being adored by both the media and the public, he’s an Egyptian Muslim. In my opinion Sterling was useless in the World Cup, I don’t rate him at all. Nowt to do with colour.

Weren't there similar stories about Wayne Rooney when he was young too?

I think the press pick on a youngster and post ridiculous non-newsworthy stories. And they do that whatever their skin colour.

And yes, the news stories came out about Stirling before the WC were ridiculous.

I'm a Liverpool fan and Raheem was adored during the Rogers almost campaign. He only got stick because of his greed to leave the club. Nothing to do with race. His inconsistent performances are what the media are on his back for in an England shirt anyway. Racism does occur as does homophobia and sexism in all parts of football. It's a microcosm of our society after all.

It affected him so bad he went and had hair transplants. He was called everything from fat, lazy, shrek to even abusing his family cause his wife was not a paper thin model with big tits.

He was black too.

Sterling is a great player. He just can’t bloody score for England. But what he does do is terrorise and wear/bring out the defence creating holes when he’s running at them. I would love him at Arsenal.

I don’t give much weight to Wrightys comments on this one.

The difference is that when you sign autographs outside of a brothel then the story writes itself. I think what Ian is picking up on is that with sterling, a lot of journalists project on to him and write between the lines for him. They want to make him out to be like a Kanye west diva just because he's young, black, rich and has a big penis.
