....for the greatest sitcom aired on tv.

At the minute I'm chuckling away to Steptoe and Son and got to wondering which is the best sitcom of either side of the Atlantic from any era.....??

Hmm it’s a toughie as both have excellent ones and woeful ones! I used to love Married with Children back in the day as a student from the US, and on its day everything from Only Fools to ‘Allo ‘Allo can be hilarious from the UK

Still think that Brit. Tv shows work best for me because the British sense of humour is different. If I had to choose a US comedy then it'd be Taxi.

Married with children!! Now there's a lost Gem.

Always a fan of roseanne back in the day

And VERY forgotten British hilarity called black books, Dylan Morran and Bill Bailey wrote and starred in it

Think us Brits have this but the US dominate for animated sitcoms... The Simpsons and South Park

Married with children was a good show but the American need to add canned laughter to all their shows just makes them unwatchable for us.

Curb your enthusiasm was funny as. But it’s the British who do lasting humour better. Fawlty Towers has to be up there.

Our "Era" of either side of the water are Roseanne and The big bang theory, mainly cos of our age preferences and the cast seemed to follow each other from both sitcoms

Though there are lots more that could make the list such as

How I met your mother, different strokes, happy days, mork and minds.

UK is more difficult as Dad's army, fawlty towers, allo allo, porridge and who knows how many more could take top spot

My favourite us sitcom is cheers, great writing as it never actual moved anywhere except the bar.

British sitcom was dinner ladies and funnily enough it never moved anywhere from the cafeteria so again required great writing

Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got...

I watched cheers religiously and often re watch the box sets now, the wit and dry humour has aged brilliantly.

Porridge is my all time fav though, so it’s a big win for the UK

Costa Blanca Spain...

Maybe people don't know about this but there is a point in the mid Atlantic that is a bit like the Van Allen belts in space. Humour (or Humor) can't cross it.

Occasionally, although very rarely, something will find a way through.

I nominate Bob Newhart (Walter Raleigh, driving instructor Etc) as the man who made it through, although his sitcom was pretty dire.

Home to Roost was bloody awful.

One of the few things that John Thaw did that was toe curlingly embarrassing.

Everything else he did was to notch.

"Now if your talking static comedy in 1 room.

Nah, if you watch it now it’s rather annoying and repetitive.

Game on was the best example of static comedy and was literally all filmed in one room.

Admittedly the humour was a bit childish at times.

I'm deterred by the need that most US comedy has for making humour forced and totally in your face, without subtlety or nuance. Otherwise it's akin to the level of a less intelligent child.

There've been incredibly good comedians from both countries but I just regard American comedies as really dumbed down.

Arthur lowe in dads army as he was the captain and centre piece of the show but clive dunn and john lemessurier added to that with a few others in the cast, probably the longest sit com on tv, but arthur lowes quality shines through every show.
