I have a manhole in the front garden and wasps seem to have made their home under it

I’m sick of them flying around the garden every time I go out to to the car

How can I get rid of them myself

Anyone else hav8ng this problem ??

I’ve been stung three times already

Tried ringing pest control but they want silly money

Try spraying the nest with shaving foam.

Just be aware it’s possible that the more times you’re stung within a short timeframe, it could set off an allergic reaction. The second time I was stung on the hand within 2 weeks, the next day I ended up in A and E with a swollen and painful hand, even though I treated it the day before with vinegar and puriton!

Or pour on some petrol light the blue touch paper and retire to a safe distance......

Have an exit planned so you don’t go running into something.

They kind of spray this dust stuff and tgere gone ..

Keep scouring Google for a deal

As another poster said wasps are a beneficial insect that play an important part in the eco system. They are especially useful in gardens for controlling afids and are good pollinators.

They dont live particularly long so if you can put up with them for a few weeks they will just die out naturally.

I don't think they are that important, but do have a use.

My Own Little World

You can buy wasp killing powder. Sprinkle it around the nest at night, wasps are less likely to be out. I did this with the nest they built under my bedroom window, they were all dead 24hr later. Check the label for a pet advisory first though.

If you can see their entrance/exit, give it a liberal spray of WD40. They get coated by it and it kills them, and they wont come back. I've done it in air bricks on the side of the house, and they were gone by the next day.

Obviously get a professional to deal with them unless you fancy a go yourself.

But a handy tip to keep numbers away from your premises, is get a jam jar about a quarter filled with jam. Then add water till it's about halfway to three quarters full of liquid. Shake it up to make a lovely sticky necter, then jab a hole in the top of the lid. About the size of a 5 pence piece.

Once the jar gets full of dead wasps you tip them out and start again

If it's underground they won't remove the nest... if it's above ground they don't ..they squirt in a powder from a Lance and a minute later relieve you of said pounds and they're off.. it's still a live nest only now with pissed off wasps

Never heard of that one! Sounds quite a good idea. Apparently USA police used to burn coffee grounds in the kitchens of houses where decomposed bodies had been found. It helped to mask the smell and it wasn't an unpleasant smell to humans.

In a town Fab forgot

My ex wife was stung on the face by a wasp. The little fuckers stinger got stuck and wouldn't detach.

She was screaming and flapping about with a wasp stuck to her cheek.

Luckily I was able to kill the wasp by smashing it with a shovel.

You can buy a spray that's quite cheap with a long jet on it so you can spray at a distance. If there's no big opening on the manhole though you'd need somebody brave (or stupid) enough to pull it open a bit first!

Best to do when darker as they're less active and you'll need to warn your neighbours too as they'll be really pissed off once you disturb them!

In my oponion, council is best option.

Just spotted this thread before I was going to start a similar one.

For us this year has been terrible for wasps.

We've never known a summer with so many and them being so aggressive.

The last time either of us got stung was over 20 years ago but this year Mrs H has been stung 7 times. So far I've managed to escape but it's almost impossible to sit out in the garden without at least half a dozen buzzing around you.

A couple of years ago we had a nest above the garage door (even then we had nothing like the trouble we've had this year) so we thought that we must have another one close by, but it's not just at home. Here in Germany they are everywhere. Is it just here or has anyone noticed a similar spike in the UK?

We've never known a summer with so many and them being so aggressive.

I've had the opposite, I usually get stung but haven't encountered any wasps or nests this year. Have noticed a pleasant increase in bees by me instead.

Humans are bigger bastards! Wasps are very very important for our eco systems. But joking aside, it must be a pain in the ass with a nest being so close! With the summer ending soon, they will leave the nest and never return. OP if you want to save money, just be patient!

I know you make a valid point and I am just joking, it was something I already knew.

They pollunate (sp) half as much as bees but do kill tiny bugs.

I don't think they are that important, but do have a use.

What got me thinking was:

How cone they are labelled as a pest?

How come you can make money from killing them?

Half joking, half serious; Does the government need to act now before we lose them forever?"

I stand corrected.

The people on The BBC are saying 'just as important as Bees'.

Still stripey bastards. If I see one today I will try and have a chat and perhaps offer a high 5 as we go our separate ways.

I think it was this thread did it got stung on leg by a wasp Saturday first time in my life can still feel the poison in my leg now the little bugger and for all the insect lovers out there he didn’t survive
