Getting tested....

London

I'm currently sat at my local drop in sex health center for a little check up. There are 8 women waiting, no men. Everytime I come here, there are significantly more women than men.

Are women (generally) more concerned about their sexual health than fellas? How often do you frequent fuckers get tested?

I’ve just had mine and also noticed that; lots of girls under twenty.

I do know females who never use condoms or get tested so i don’t think it’s gender specific; more arrogance or ignorant connected.

Have never really thought about it before but now you mention it OP whenever I go there *is* a gender imbalance with more women than men - although given that most Sexual Health clinics offer other services such as contraception for women (e.g. fitting coils or prescribing the pill) as well as testing, could that be a reason?

I get tested every 3 months at least and always ask for a full screen regardless of how active I've been or the activities I've been involved in.

Some of us have oral without the condom which carries risks. A man giving oral to a woman can carry risks, the condom could split or tear and you not know it... a man touching his bare cock and then going on to play with your clit carries risks...

No matter how big or small the risk is, a responsible person who cares about their sexual health will get checked out regularly.

Do you use condom or dental dam during oral? If not there is a part of your answer.

Considering clinics do contraception as well as testing I don't see how any conclusions can be reached regarding sexual health and gender.

As others have said, there are risks from oral - not only that but other STIs can be transmitted regardless of condom use or not - a condom is NOT 100% protection against an STI and to think otherwise is not only naive but foolhardy too!!

I get tested every other month by the Terrence Higgins Trust at the Vanilla Alternative bi night.

If for any reason they are not there or I missed one, I now use the postal testing Service.

It gives me peace of mind even though I practice safer sex, and I find it extremely easy.

I never get tested.... I like being riddled with every manner of sti’s....

People are funny..... everyone gets tested every 3 months and never plays bareback....

This is always the standard answer....

I go to my doctor every 6 months and get tested then... if I’m about to enter a serious relationship, then I will get both of us tested....

Unless you’re a sex worker , Porn star , or never use condoms....

Why are people wasting the governments money at clinics every 3 months?

Condoms aren’t 100% safe, and if you’re having unprotected oral sex both ways you should be checking for that too.

And as someone said you only need once, I’m surprised that it wouldn’t be in your thoughts if you’re sexually active. Each to their own though.

Wasting the governments money?

It’s there for us to use, if you are sexually active it is wise to be getting checked out regularly.

Are you wasting the governments money by using the NHS instead of paying for private?

If you want to screen at 6 months that’s fine, some of us like to do it at 3 months, and that is fine too.

Much rather “waste” the governments money as you say than wait an extra 3 months and potentially catch something that could be detrimental to my health the longer I leave it.

Hiding in the shadows

Only time I've ever seen a man at my clinic they've been with a female partner.

My clinic covers everything gynecological, not just testing.

I used to get checked every 3 mths, but I've been going every 8wks this year.

I take all the precautions I personally can, but nothing is 100% safe, and some people do lie about what they get upto elsewhere.

I admire your honesty, but ignorance, in this case, is not bliss.

Make the appointment or pop along to a walk in clinic and get yourself into the habit of being checked regularly. Condoms do not offer 100% protection.

Better safe than sorry.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea can be carried in the throat after oral sex, so condoms wouldn't be much use there x

I asked the nurse about the gender difference. She replied "we definitely get more women being tested than men. Perhaps we should do an audit on it".

Maybe men don't care, can't be arsed or think they're immune?

Anyway, got a big bag full of Skyns to use with a willing victim

The last time I went to a test centre the appointments were staggered so you didn't see anyone else coming and going.

Sexual health screening is covered in the monthly tests I have at work.

Are women (generally) more concerned about their sexual health than fellas? How often do you frequent fuckers get tested?

"Great thread.

Is there a website link for the postal check procedure? "

I use letsgetchecked.com which does a range of tests for up to around £140. Very quick service, a lot easier than going to the gum clinic. Contrary to some belief they do HIV tests, through a finger prick device (it hurts a little and I always get the shakes when I press down on it to get it to jab me! I then always bleed like a slaughtered animal for about five minutes!) and oral swabs too.

When active I get tested around every four months - 16 weeks for exposure basically. I don't usually wear condoms for oral or use dental dams, or give oral on a covered cock - but have done in clubs with people I have absolutely no knowledge of. Don't often play like that now, although of course the risk from oral is still the same whether in a club or with a new partner in a first encounter.

STIs - they are like wasps - what use do they serve?! Why does sex have to be marred by this crap?! Ah well - be responsible and get tested is the answer.

Prevention is cheaper than treatment or cure.

You may not think you've met someone in your high risk list but that doesn't mean they haven't met with someone from the list.

As others have mentioned, even if you don't bareback you might still have risky play with oral or touching.

There has been a reduction in sexual health services in my area and they no longer offer a drop in service. They have never offered a postal testing service.

You have to phone up for an appointment and they always ask you if you have symptoms. If you say no they offer you an appointment in about a months time, if you say yes you get an appointment in approx 2 weeks time.

Men and women have separate clinics within the same building so I have no idea what the differences in gender are. The female clinic offers many different services as well as sti testing - I went there to have the coil fitted.

The results always come through really quickly. I went on Friday 3rd to be tested and got my all clear text on Tuesday 7th.

I know a fair few who pay for the postal HIV test kit rather than the hassle of queuing at the clinic.

Is it free in the States? I understand from family that contraception is not freely available.

You can carry most STIs with no symptoms, the cost of the test is minimal compared to trying to treat most STIs. A woman can carry chlamydia with no symptoms, if untreated it can scar fallopian tubes and cause infertility. If you have more than 1 partner, or your partner does it makes perfect sense to go get tested frequently

My local club has the local STI clinic in twice a week for free testing which I think is great, no using inaccessibility as an excuse for not getting tested and because it is in a swingers club they don't even bother asking how many partners you've had in the past six months, how many are likely to have had anal sex with men etc as after the first few visits they know my answers off by heart. I am tested around once a month to every six weeks because I am in a high risk category as I sleep with bisexual men both anally and frontally, I play with needles and sharps in clubs - often with strangers, work with vulnerable people some of whom are drug users, have a really rubbish immune system and am generally quite a bit of a whore that said I don't have unprotected sex with anyone bar my fluid bound regular partners, use condoms for oral with men especially ones I've never seen before, gloves for fisting, medical or fingering play whether anal or vaginal, dental dams for all new female sexual partners until I know they've had a clear test come back and keep very details records of whom I've slept with and when so any come back can be identified as when exactly I was exposed to it.

My clinic gives results within 6 hours by text. It’s quite hard to get an appointment at the moment due to clinics closing around the area so a bigger influx of people. You have to log on at 7pm the night befits to try to get one online for the next day. I love having not to wait more than a few hours for the results.

And yes I really am that anal about it lol. I am polyamorous and all of us in our group take very great care not to infect any others as most of us swing outside of the group. Potentially passing something onto one partner is pretty bad, passing it onto several who could then further pass it on is pretty damn horrific. Ot could get out of control so easily so just better we all play as safe as we can :D

My local clinic, which is about a 40 minute drive away, only opens to the public about two days a week and the times are restricted to the morning. Not great for people who work regular hours.

I really wish my GP would offer a GUM clinic service.

Will probably look into a postal service in the future.

Some do, some don't. Playing safe doesn't mean accidents can't happen. They do. I have contracted the most common STI, pregnancy, through a split condom (a very long time ago).

I choose to know my status and have all the tests regularly. At the very least I can then pinpoint when I have contracted something and how. I lost too many friends in the '90s to take it for granted.

I'm also really glad that our primary care doctors don't send us to the emergency room, as you would call them, for minor problems and treatments. It may be difficult to get an appointment but if I called and said it was an emergency I would be given an emergency appointment. If I called the GUM and said I had been exposed I would get an appointment within two days.

If you think “playing safe” doesn’t come with any risks, more fool you.

Accidents happen & something as little as touching a bare cock then touching your vagina can pose a risk.

Thankfully I never caught anything *touch wood* but that doesn’t mean I should stop giving a damn about my sexual health.

When I get tested, both bloods and swabs are taken. You don’t choose. I like a piece of mind anyway. I have had bareback but with a regular partner but who’s to say he is being honest and safe with others.

I’m not sure how it works in the UK but doctors in the states don’t test for HIV or Hepatitis unless you ask for it.... Also these test cost about $800 dollars and my insurance only covers about $600 ....

If I was to have a condom break during sex... we have rapid response clinics but they are very expensive..... you have to pay $300 per person but you get results in 1 hour....

"I'm currently sat at my local drop in sex health center for a little check up. There are 8 women waiting, no men. Everytime I come here, there are significantly more women than men.

Are women (generally) more concerned about their sexual health than fellas? How often do you frequent fuckers get tested?

"

Myself personally gets checked after every new playmate... then il usually get checked once a month depending how active I’ve been. I play safe but it’s never 100%

"I note that pretty much everyonw here has listed safe sex as an interest. Are y'all getting tested because you've been barebacking or is there something about failing condoms I should know about?

Some of us have oral without the condom which carries risks. A man giving oral to a woman can carry risks, the condom could split or tear and you not know it... a man touching his bare cock and then going on to play with your clit carries risks...

No matter how big or small the risk is, a responsible person who cares about their sexual health will get checked out regularly. "

Very well said, that covers it

Still shocks me that in this day and age there are people that think regular testing must mean your barebacking..

Biggest thing lately for me is that in my area they have seriously cut services for those over 25. Most of the drop in places are only for 16 to 25 and getting an appointment can take weeks. Also you don't automatically get offered the full check up unless you book for that.

I tend to use that clinic sessions aimed at the working girls and boys... as it's quicker and more offered

It's very difficult for over 25's to get tested in my area too. I guess they want to target their limited resources on the ones they see need it most?

I'm shocked that it would appear that more women get tested bearing in mind how many women are too embarrassed to get cervical screening!!!!

I suspect most of them are there for contraception.

Women in general attend doctors more than men and seek help earlier for health concerns. I can't see why the area of sexual health would be different.

mis-types and auto corrects leads cock leeds

At the clinic I attend ..blood screening is an option that you're asked would you like, if you present symptoms they'll only then do a urethral swab.

for guys it can be just a pee sample in a test tube ... not embarrassing( unless you miss the tube.) . get tested

I’m in the same area as 2good and the clinics are overwhelmed as a result of budget cuts in recent years. They are reluctant to run a full spectrum of tests if you are asymptomatic. I have to be quite specific to get the full spectrum of blood tests as they tend to look at the nice middle aged lady and make assumptions, which is a pain. I’m going to investigate the home kit availability.

I am surprised and disappointed by how many regular players I talk to that don’t get tested. There seems to be an assumption that being hygienic and only meeting ‘nice’ people is some kind of prophylactic.

The home kits are good because they do swab and blood. You can chose to do one or the other by t they provide equipment for you to collect both. It's very convenient. Even the postage back to them is free. Can't praise it enough.

I don’t think its right to generalise. But to answer your question we get regularly tested, we are concerned therefore we play safe and expect the same also.
