I just remember mum and dad being really happy, and trying to explain to me why it was better. I didn't understand very well. " This gets worse. I stayed up all night to watch that election!

"Inspired by the person who said they remember Kennedy being shot, what's the first significant historical event you remember.? Mine would be the miners strike of 1972 which led to power cuts. I distinctly remember sitting in the cold with candles round us. I would have been five... " I remember power cuts in the 70s but that might have been down to not having the money for the meter. The first ones that resonated with me was the drought of 76 it was just messing like this year, and the death of Elvis in 77.

"I very vaguely remember TV footage of the first Gulf War, but I didn't understand what it was about. You know you are old when you vividly remember events people were only vaguely aware of as children " Sorry. If it makes you feel any better, I once found myself in an audience where I was the only one that recognised the significance of something related to September 11... no one else was old enough to remember.

"I remember one night of power cuts because my sister set fire to our bedroom table while she was messing around with a candle. I remember the Queen's silver Jubilee." I was going to say the silver jubilee. Some boy pulled my pigtales at the school party and I got told off for playing on the climbing frame in my pretty dress. I hated wearing dresses.

"9/11. I was four, I remember being in my living room and my mum watching it on our tiny TV while my brother was asleep " That makes me feel old, I was 19 when that happened! I was only a few weeks into my first job after leaving college and came home from work to see it on the news, I thought it was the trailer to some spectacular new film at first. As the gravity of what had happened hit me I knew it was going to have far reaching consequences and the world would never be the same again. I went down the army recruiting office not long after to try and sign up as it was obvious a war was coming, perhaps luckily I didn't get in on that occasion and missed the Iraq debacle. I've fond memories of those carefree years between me leaving school in 1998 and 2001, the world seemed a much more positive, exciting and safe place then.
