The death of Winston Churchill. There was a serious flu epidemic and I was in my bed downstairs listening to the radio. In the days pre central heating you always knew if someone was properly ill because their bed came downstairs " in the warm"

I think the first one I remember is the morning it was announced Tony Blair had won the general election.

I just remember mum and dad being really happy, and trying to explain to me why it was better. I didn't understand very well.

I remember power cuts in the 70s but that might have been down to not having the money for the meter.

The first ones that resonated with me was the drought of 76 it was just messing like this year, and the death of Elvis in 77.

I was born in '82 so paid very little attention to the news until the late 80's. I do remember those terrifying AIDS adverts on the news a lot in the 80's, the Berlin wall coming down in '89, and Freddie Mercurys death in 1991 being a big historical event as well as Gulf War 1 at the same time.

I remember the summer of 76. I remember the Queen's jubilee. I remember elvis dying. I remember power cuts. But all of those are vague memories.

The one I really remember is the miners strike. It's a defining moment in my life in that it politicised me with views I still hold to this day

Piper Alpha. My dad worked offshore at the time and its was all over the Scottish and National news.

There was a complete communication block to all rigs offshore.

I remember my gran and grandad coming over and staying with us until we knew what was happening.

I remember getting quite emotional about it.

I remember the ambulance service strikes because it impacted my parents and me lots, I remember going to the picket line with my dad.

It went on till Christmas and people brought stuff to support the strike, some brought money we got given out turkey cos ppl didn’t want a young boy not having Christmas dinner I was also given some presents.

I remember being all thankful to the generosity of people.

The next was watching the next shuttle launch after the challenger explosion was the most beautiful image seeing the shuttle launch at Kennedy space centre observation platform

I remember some of tbese things vividly. When 9/11 happened id gone to see my friend at work. I went to the shop and heard the first news report. I went back and told my friend two aeroplanes had crashed.

When princess diana died i had friends round and saw the first news report which actually said she had broken her arm. We watched it unfold during the night and everyone waking up next day to the news

I was going to say the silver jubilee. Some boy pulled my pigtales at the school party and I got told off for playing on the climbing frame in my pretty dress. I hated wearing dresses.

Winter of Discontent, sitting around the fire trying to keep warm. No central heating in our house and we’d wake up in winter to frost inside the bedroom windows.

Lots of other things people have mentioned plus FA Cup finals, McEnroe at Wimbledon, the C4 launch with Jon Snow doing the evening news.

The Winter Olympics in 88. My teacher was a massive fan and I remember watching it in school and thinking it was a huge event. I quite fancied myself as a champion skier in the playground. I made excellent ‘whoosh’ noises.

Probably 1976 for me.

I remember watching John Curry skating in the winter Olympics, think it was Innsbruck? Then of course the scorching hot summer, stand pipes and water bowsers in the street, queuing with buckets to get water. I had chicken pox that summer too and my mum had her appendix out. I clearly remember playing out in the park opposite our house in just my knickers, covered in chicken pox scabs.

I was going to say this myself, my dad worked for the coal board and I can remember us bathing in front of the old coal fire and making real toast, and m boiling the potatoes on the flames, and my mam putting candles all over the house when the lights were off, it was quite an adventure when we were little

Reading this forum makes me feel so ridiculously young . Probably for me it was the Iraq war. Watching newsround it seemed to be covered everyday. Oddly 9/11 or Diana passing I don't remember at all. The London bombing I remember somewhat bcos it effected me directly; as I could have very easily been in London at the time

I also cant recall watching anything at all on the television apart from childrens programmes until i was about 10

I can remember having to stand up and being asked to count, Starting from 1 and going as far as I could, Sweating and stuttering as I counted I don’t think I made it to a 100,

I can remember having candles in the house during the 3 Day Week of 1974. I more vividly remember my sister being born in 1970 though, if that counts as a historical event!

Oh, I've just remembered that I can remember the Apollo 14 moon landing too. I had a commemorative sew-on badge from it that came free with my Look-In comic

Think the one that stands out the most, asking my mum "why are those men doing that it's not nice"

We'd watched the news & they'd shown a clip of the Vietnam war.

I'm not sure how old I was at the time, but I know now it ended just after my 5th birthday

However, the 1st actual piece of news I can recal hearing was the announcement that Elvis Presley had died 16-8-77.

That makes me feel old, I was 19 when that happened! I was only a few weeks into my first job after leaving college and came home from work to see it on the news, I thought it was the trailer to some spectacular new film at first. As the gravity of what had happened hit me I knew it was going to have far reaching consequences and the world would never be the same again. I went down the army recruiting office not long after to try and sign up as it was obvious a war was coming, perhaps luckily I didn't get in on that occasion and missed the Iraq debacle.

I've fond memories of those carefree years between me leaving school in 1998 and 2001, the world seemed a much more positive, exciting and safe place then.

I remember crossing the Forth Road Bridge on the day it was opened. Before that we had to cross by ferry which I have very vague recollections of although I must have only done it a couple of times.

From there on landing on moon where a friend and I sat up all night . Yawns sooo boring .

Kennedy and so many more big deals .

Living through the 3 day week a few months after getting married put us into debt before we even got started back to rationing .

A whole life time of memories.

"Ok. From reading this thread i can take nyself back to being 5 and decimalization. We where the first year to be taught it and that was 1971

Just about remember that. Going to the shop with 2 1/2 pence piece.

Lived through loads but most are only vague memories, Id best checked into a nursing home soon. "

I remember that as just being really confused how my sixpence was suddenly 2 1/2p. My understanding of numbers couldn't make sense of it, especially as we still called it a sixpence.

I was in 6th grade

In a solicitor with my family. Starring at the building across, there’s a car park.

Two man walked towards the fence.

One in blue jacket climbed over the fence. Looked behind to the other man behind him for a while and within 15 seconds he jumped off from about 13 stories high into a road construction site.

All my relatives said I saw someone wiping windows when there’s no windows there until we got downstairs and saw ambulance, police, fire trucks.

That same night I got picked up in a unmarked police car with my father to a police station to give my statement to what I saw.

A week later I got picked up by a unmarked police car from school to go back to the office to describe what I saw.

The man who jumped off owed loan sharks about £50,000 from gambling.

The earliest historical event I can say I remember is the Challenger Disaster in 1986. (I did have to google the date because I wasn't certain if Maradonas "hand of God" was before or after).

However, I'm pretty certain I also remember Diana and Charles getting married in 1981 (I would have been almost 4).

I'm sure when I read through this thread I'll remember earlier stuff too.

The death of princess Diana I was in a alcohol induced coma in Rhodes and late for work a scream woke me.

9/11 just finishing a 48 hour flight delay in Cyprus I had just fallen asleep to my now ex hubby calling to tell me to turn the tv on there had been a huge plane crash. I sat there watching the tv gobsmacked. Next thing I knew I was in head office waiting to brief the other reps on a plan to go forward. That day changed the world forever!!
