every e-mail you send and every phone conversation is recorded just in case our rulers or betters fancy a nose.

I think the fuss is because it was not done with the interest of national security or crimes against the state. It was a surreptitious, and illegal, abuse of power that was used to bully and hound a large number of individuals purely in the interest of making financial gain.

And before someone points out that these celebrities deserve it because they court publicity. I cannot accept any action, such as this, which violates the right of EVERY individual to have the right to privacy.

Sorry if that sounds a little pompous but celebrities are people too, and turning a blind eye to such cases gives carte blanche, to News International and others, to pursue other people in a similar fashion. Which had already begun to happen.

Emails and phone calls are not recorded, they are _umoured to go through a system that flags up certain combinations of key words or phases to monitor for terrorist activity.

Not true. Emails, text messages and phone calls are scanned for buzz words and if they contain five or more they are red-flagged and investigated. MI5 have neither the resources nor the inclination to wade through billions of messages sent every day. It's an urban myth that the govt record every single message that is sent.

MI5 have neither the resources nor the inclination to wade through billions of messages sent every day. It's an urban myth that the govt record every single message that is sent."

The truth is wishy they do not have to since 2009 the Government announced it was pressing ahead with privately-held "Big Brother" databases which opposition leaders said amount to "state-spying" and a form of "covert surveillance" on the public.

It has done so despite its own consultation showing there was little public support for the plan.

The Home Office admitted that only a third of respondents to its six-month consultation on the issue supported its proposals, with 50 per cent fearing that the scheme lacked sufficient safeguards to protect the highly personal data from abuse.

The new law increased the amount of personal data which can be accessed by officials through the controversial Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), which is supposed to be used for combatting terrorism.

Although most private firms already hold details of every customer's private calls and emails for their own business purposes, most only do so on an ad hoc basis and only for a period of several months.

The new rules, known as the Intercept Modernisation Programme, will not only force communication companies to keep their records for longer, but to expand the type of data they keep to include details of every website their customers visit – effectively registering every click online.

Even that pales into insignicance compared to RAF Menwith hill operated by the NSA on British soil.Go look at questions asked in the House of commons about this place ,go look at the Massive Fibre optic pipelines going into the place,Details of which were unfortunately mistakenly released by BT and the local council under the FOI act....... pmsl.

I wish it was a "Urban Myth" but it appears that urban myth is a myth

Let's put it to the test shall we. If I type "It'll be a blast, they won't know what hit them and it'll be fun terrorising the neighbours at the same time" (when I could be talking about an Xmas surprise for the street I live in.)

I'd hazard an educated guess that MI5 won't be barging down my front door within the next hour or so.

I'm always a bit confused when people talk about this being a police state. I went to Indonesia in the 90s and can honestly say that we are incredibly lucky compared to some countries. Free media, reasonably uncorrupt police and politicians (other European countries are much, much worse), and allowed to meet others without getting our front doors kicked in.

I agree that sometimes the police over react, but they tend to get found out, as did the politicians, and as are the newspapers being now. I live in York, a pretty quiet and crime free city, so I am unaware of police being nasty, but I have got to wonder what people are getting up to when they get on the wrong side of the police.

I didn't forget that... I respect the police force in this country, they do a great job under difficult circumstances...

some not so good ones and they will face the same disciplinary action as any other workers doing something wrong in their company.

some shop workers thieve from within

some factory workers thieve from within

some MP's thieve from within

some dentists thieve from within.

and so and so on and so.

if you are corrupt, no matter what job you do..... you will commit the crime, do the time

He holds some power, to provide...facts...

Not ramblings by people who watch to much " spooks "..

Inform and educate..the Information Commissioner will help...statements by GCHQ etc...often reluctantly...but there tis..

"some are just too dull lol"

Maybe leave it out on the front garden of a night and then the next day when that guy in his flat-backed van comes by going "Old Iron....Old Iron" with his megaphone he can pick it up and carefully pop it into the back of his van.

Then he can take it down to the town and weigh it in and turn that unwanted unsharpenable sword into cold hard cash. Ooh that's a sweet feeling.

Best bit is that the old scrap man can then set about recycling it and thus reducing the need to produce even more metals with the incumbent costs of production on the economy.

Yes that unsharpenable sword that you currently see as a bit of a dead loss can in fact be a very valuable asset.

And what irony if it was then melted down (perhaps by a craftsman the like of which we see on TV shows such as Time Team doing re-enactments) and made into a newly-sharp sword.

How sweet thy fabled sceptre!!

4.2m CCTV cameras

Most of which are private and the government would have to get a search warrant for each company to track you. And lost will be in central London, really affects me in Yorkshire.

300 CCTV appearances a day

Again, depends where you are, most private so pretty much irrelevant.

Reg plate recognition cameras

Only of use if they are tracking a particular plate.... "Oh look, Mrs Jones at No. 32 has gone for a pint of milk for her pussy"

Shop RFID tags

You can take these out when you've bought it you know. Unless you are nicking it, it which case do it before you walk out of the shop.

If you are wealthy enough to own a sports car you are in the top 10% of earners. If you own 2 you are in the top 1%........

Conspiracy theorists crack me up as they cannot possibly know what the truth is about anything - else it wouldn't be a conspiracy theory would it, it'd be a fact, but they defend their position like they're quoting from the Book of Revelations and ALWAYS seem to promote the notion that they are in the know about - whatever - and nobody else knows the real truth.

I just love living in total ignorance safe in the knowledge that what I don't know can't hurt me, and that I care about it even less.

Yes, I did infer it. Believe me, any marketeer will be able to tell you that someone who has the money to pay the maintenance bill on two sports cars is not part of the 99%.

We expected anyone with an income over £80k would have the finds to buy a sports car outright. top 10%. These figures came from Lotus.

If you have enough money to maintain 2 cars, you don't need to be earning twice that figure but you do need to be earning over £100k, which is in the top 1% of earnings in this country.

Perhaps I took offence at your flipant remarks to my posts, my intention was not to call you a liar, but you either own these things in which case you are top 1% (even if you may not think you are) or you don't own them......

I know my facts, but can't post the relevant links for the statistical analysis of UK earnings......

Actually, it would be easy to prove car and property ownership one way or another! Picture of both cars on the driveway of the house with the owner sat in the seat of the one nearest the house! But put on here in the next day! (by Friday night!)

Be a bit much to expect that he actually knows someone with said items, so if he could do that he proves his point!

Of course, there is no need at all to do that. It matters not one jot if he tells the truth or no. I am however another who wonders where he gets his information from on how we are spied on. If he can get that info, surely others can too and it would have been "exposed" by now?

So the other 5% is owned by the remaining 99% which means if you're not in the top 1% you own 0.0404040404040404040404040404% of the wealth.

Which is bollocks cos I got 0.0562% of it, and a Toyota Avensis, which, as everybody knows, is just a sports car with a family built into it.

"so if i had 2 mg midgets your arguement would be the same...........what fool.

i'm even more bored of you now

for your information the 1% means the 1% who own 95% of the wealth...........i can assure you that isn't me.

you really should try harder.

According to the same wikipedia page I mentioned earlier, the top 1% by wealth (i.e. anyone who has more than ~£688,000 in assets) only have 21% of the total wealth in the UK"
