"It's not necessarily the terms themselves that I think people find offensive more the context and timing of their use - if someone referred to me as "babe" or "hun" in a first message, or after we'd only just met, I'd find it completely shallow and insincere - if however it was someone I'd built a connection with it would be different " This. "While some terms are clearly used by some men to somehow establish precedence over others (its the old Alpha Male trick) most are actually too familiar and downright insulting in say a chatroom or early messages - Babe, Hun, Sweetie etc wind me up let alone the poor lady being disrespected. But some mentioned in posts are actually colloquial - '"Me Duck" is distinctly Notts and Leics, "Luvver" is very South Western, "My Lovely" (I am guilty of this) is also found in the West. So maybe it is who is using the term and in what context its used that should be considered? Someone mentioned 'Girl' as annoying? I do use this when complimenting a lady as in: "Now you Girl are bloody lovely!" Its something from way back when and is just a turn of phrase. Never had any complaints but I will be more careful from now on ... " It's contextual, as most things are. But it can come off condescending or infantilising. | |||
