With my job I travel about a bit., different towns and cities ...

I'm from Leeds and in Leeds city centre for on street parking pay and display it's near enough £3 an hour...I go to Bradford city centre and the same on street pay and display parking is £0.70 per hour, some towns have free parking.

Why is there such a vast difference, I notice no great improvement in the infrastructure (number of pot holes ) of the higher charging councils the running costs per capita would be roughly the same for a council.. are the towns with free parking just better at managing their finances.. why the vast difference

Now with the diesel surcharge in London in places you can pay up to about £8 an hour on the road. Parking prices are a joke in most places and I think they should only be used in places where spaces are limited, to try and keep the congestion down.

Leeds is to introduce a clean air zone..they're going to charge buses taxis and I think hgv (those costs will be passed on to their customers )for using it.. they say the charge is " to be spent on managing the zone" what evert managing means

Hiding in the shadows

Couple of years ago, I was on a training course on London, I called the venue to check on parking & was told plenty available outside..

What they didn't tell me, was it was hourly metered parking bays, and could only park 4hrs max, at £12 an hour!

I was due to be there, 10hrs a day,2 days a week for 9wks, I almost cried when I figured out the parking cost.

End of the first day, someone told me about an app 'Just Park' managed to find whole day's parking, about ¼ mile walk away for the same price as an hour on the meter.

I've been using the app ever since.

Locally to me parking ranges from 50p for 4hrs, to £3.50 an hour, and that's 2 streets, parallel to each other 100yrds apart

The nearest big city to me (Cambridge) charges extortionate prices for city centre parking (£12 for four hours, £26 for over 5 hours) and one of the reasons is to cut down on traffic coming into the city and the effect it has on some of the older buildings - there's a relatively efficient park and ride scheme that costs £3 per adult (plus £1 per car) so they do provide facilities to avoid the city prices.

By comparison though I was recently in Nottingham and 24 hours in the station car park that was 10-15 mins walk at most from the city centre was £5!!

I guess it comes down to individual cities/towns and how popular they are from a tourist perspective, facilities they offer and as with Cambridge whether there's a need to protect ancient buildings plus how much they need to attract people into the city centre.

Park and ride in Leeds ... couldn't tell you the prices .. the car park for it is huge and when I drive past is very sparsely used..

given the death of the high street stores I can't help think the councils need a refink

I always park at Nottingham station for £5. Park on level 3, and you can walk straight out onto the tram platform, and get a tram upto the city centre for £1.

I’m appalled about the charging on hospital carparks. I understand that they need to deter some people who aren’t using the hospital who park, but I think it’s bad for charging outpatients and visitors to visit the hospital. Was in A and E recently, was there under 4 hours and was charged £5 for a carpark that hasn’t got enough spaces!
