In 2018 this should be a non-issue - he's a great actor and would make a great Bond - anyway he deserves to drive an Aston after putting up with that old Volvo

I think Idris is a fantastic actor and I must admit a little bit of wee came out when I heard that Luther was coming back!

However Bond has a documented back story that suggests his heritage is Caucasian, so casting an actor of a different ethnicity effective rewrites that backstory.

I agree in this day and age that colour, sex or sexual orientation etc shouldn’t matter - and recently there has been many examples of white actors taking on traditionally ethnic roles (Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell jumps immediately to mind), so I guess it’s open to debate how ‘true’ to the books you think it should be.

How true to the books are the films? There was a row on here recently about the fact that actors should be cast on merit (and box office pull, in that argument). That was about non-disabled or cis actors playing disabled or trans.

It's fiction. If the argument is that we should only ever stick to what was written then Ira Aldridge should never have been driven off the stage and Daniel Day Lewis was miscast in My Left Foot.

When A Wizard of Earthsea was made in to (a pretty awful) film they cast a white actor for a character written as black.

The most important things for a bond (i think - as a fan) are:-

1. Does he look like he could successfully kill someone with his bare hands?

2. Does he look like he could charm the knickers off a nun?

3. Can he act?

4. Is he suitably athletic but without looking too athletic?

5. Would i fuck him?

Idris Elba has all of that covered. I want a Bond who will be in a good few films, not someone who is going to be a one Bond wonder.

No. Dr Who is some weird alien who can regenerate into any form. It just so happens that it’s always been a white male so far.

I’m not up on the written heritage if Bond, but if it is specified in the original books that he is white then I guess it goes against that. But Idris would make a great Bond.

I accept we could have a black Bond but Idris Elba isn’t Bond.

Adrian Lester could do it. Bond isn’t an ‘action hero’. He’s an orphaned public schoolboy with a chip on his shoulder and an alcohol problem. Idris Elba is too physically imposing to be Bond

As for a female Bond? Never. The issue isn’t that we need a female Bond, the issue is that we need better scripts and roles for women. Atomic Blonde was a great role for Charlize Theron and Salt was pretty good with Angelina Jolie

Let Bond be Bond for better or worse. Just make different films rathe4 than try to update the character

Godalming

It won’t happen. Trust me.

That aside, he needs to be at the right age for him to be in 3 films, which will span 10 years.

For the franchise, other than anything else, he would be too old. He can’t just do one film.

There’s another emotion about a black actor playing Bond that it could happen. But not Elba.

I also think James Bond to a certain degree is dated. The vision of England often seen in these films I have never lived personally and cannot relate to. I find it as backwards as Downton Abbey and the the romanticism attached to a particular period of British history.

I was reading the books in order when the fuss about Daniel Craig getting the part was all over the press and tv.

I saw his interviews and made up my mind . . . Bad choice.

Seeing the first of his films Casino Royale at the cinema I was amazed how wrong I had been.

Updated and moved to a different part of Europe the film pretty much follows the book. Craig brought back the ruthless, edgy Bond of the books that had been missing for years

David Tennant . . Oh please !!

It would make sense if bond was like Dr who. Who regenerates. Something along the lines of "007 is dead, you're the new 007, and try not to make a hash of it, there's a good chap.".

I don't have a problem with stringer bell becoming bond. It's not quite traditional Flemming, but it's not too radical in casting.

To be honest Bond is a cold war creation from thd just past ww2 era.

Nothing wrong with period drama, but to be true to the stories it must be a million miles away from modern expectations.

Perhaps it's time to retire the 007 brand.

Seen a few say he's too old, or he does physically match up to the described. Pretty laughable as he's younger the some previous bonds, Daniel Craig being the most obvious choice as an example and as for physically matching up, Bond has changed enough times for that to just be a name they use for one of their agents, so as long as they see him as the best actor for the job the rest is pretty irrelevant.

If you look at Skyfall Bond has clear Bi tendencies when he’s getting felt up by the bad guy he declares “what makes you think this is the first time”
