"How can you say it's not racist if none of you are Muslim or wear a burkha? Until you have or are put in that situation how can we judge what that person can feel. It's not about what you say but what the person feels. " Because we are allowed an opinion. Can I then claim that any comment, which I might find offensive about anything I wear or do is racist against me?

"As do r the far left. Oh dear. " You *do* realise that by specifying 'far left' you're referring to those at the extreme end of the political spectrum, and that therefore your point is, in essence, complaining about the lack of moderate extremists...

"Boris Johnson has been told to apologise for his remark that " ladies in Burkhas look like post boxes"!! Is that really a racist remark! " No it’s not. It just means there sense of style is very poor. Or if you look at it the other way it hides how ugly they are. It should be banned cover up yes but not the main identification of any person. I wouldn’t be allowed to fill up a motorcycle in a petrol station hiding my face.

"Boris Johnson; Giving The Duke of Edinburgh a run for his money in the Ghaff Stakes. " It's not a gaff. It's carefully crafted rhetoric that sits alongside his piccaninny, and other such, comments. He's being advised by Bannon. He's setting out his stall for leader. He's relying on everyone just dismissing it as 'Boris being Boris' and it's all working.

" Why would criticism of Islam upset the far left? The far left is predominantly antitheist. Making fun of an entire swathe of people because they are foreign and "look funny"... possibly.

"It is not Racist at all, it is his opinion and it is pure common sense. When people where a Burka, the British people have no idea who is behind that Burka! What photograph is on their Passport or Driving Licence? The UK's most wanted terrorist escaped the country disguised as a female wearing a Burka. The Burka can be intimidating. We are a Western country, ban the Burka. If they do not like it, we are a democratic country, they are free to leave and live in a Muslim country." I don't think you should ban the Burka. I think concealing your face in public should be banned, that would include chavs who pull scarves over their faces to avoid being caught committing crimes.

You know that lots of Burka wearing ladies are also British, right? The Burka (full head and face to toe covering) is actually not all that common and where it is, is worn mostly by Arabs. Niqaab (full covering with a letterbox to coin Boris) is more common, and agree, for identity purposes should be open to inspection in banks and at border security etc. The majority of Western Muslim women will wear a Hijab or Khimar. Should we be banning these traditional headdresses? Will we also be banning altered hair colours, coloured contact lenses, facial jewellery, facial hair, facial cosmetic surgery? No. Live and let live'. If you don't like living in a multi-cultural, democratic country, leave and find one you do like.

" This thread is evidence that it worked, too. For the hard of thinking; the reaction he was looking for was for people to read the news and say things like: "Bloody Muslims, how dare they come over here and do that. They don't belong".... Which ultimately leads to: "We should deport them, even if they were born here (see: Windrush") And then when they can't all be deported "other solutions" are sought.

"Islam isn't a race, it's open to all races. Burka's aren't religiously required either. In the world we live in today, covering your face is no longer an option for any religion or race. On a separate note, only 140 days until Christmas See my post: he wasn't actually accused of Racism. I'm going by the forum title and the radio. Which is why I made the point - the thread title is misleading, and if that's how it's being reported on the radio, that's misleading too. I mention it because there are a lot of "Islam is not a race" statements on this thread. Although Islamophobia is used as a convenient "stick" by the far right to justify the abuse of southern Asian people (in spite of considerable Muslim populations of all races). What exactly is Islamophobia? It's clearly not an actual phobia. " Nor is homophobia. What's your point, caller?

Can I then claim that any comment, which I might find offensive about anything I wear or do is racist against me?" And that opinion can be wrong

"Boris Johnson has been told to apologise for his remark that " ladies in Burkhas look like post boxes"!! Is that really a racist remark! " I can't help wondering whether all the people who found his remarks offensive actually read or heard his remarks. He was basically saying that no body should be co-erced into wearing a burqa as well as that a ban on wearing it would not be right either. In other words he was arguing for freedom of choice. He was also arguing in favour of anyone who has to deal with the public, being able to see the faces of those members of the public. Again, arguing in favour of peoples rights. I think his comparison to letter boxes was inaccurate but hardly the worst insult ever thrown around and he absolutely did not say that people wearing a burqa were likely to be bank robbers. It seems to me like a case of getting offended without knowing exactly why. Interesting to hear some of the howls of indignation coming from the labour party,I imagine they are quite glad of a little distraction from their own troubles.

"Boris Johnson; Giving The Duke of Edinburgh a run for his money in the Ghaff Stakes. It's not a gaff. It's carefully crafted rhetoric that sits alongside his piccaninny, and other such, comments. He's being advised by Bannon. He's setting out his stall for leader. He's relying on everyone just dismissing it as 'Boris being Boris' and it's all working. Presumably to target the support of UKIP'ers as they seem to be the sort of people who like to re-enaxt their own little "Kristalnacht"...." "I don't like boris but this just seems like a smear campaign to me He writes for a living. He chose his words to create a press story. There is no smear campaign. He's got the reaction he sought. True, But the general uproar thats resulting is just childish It's not a racist remark to notice an outfit resembles something else is it?" Yeah but you need to read between the lines to see the racist, homophobic, bigoted, classist, trabsphobic, cisgendered, white privileged, hetronormative undertones of islamiphobia.

"It's predominantly an oppression thing, it's no coincidence that women from an extremely hot country wear full length head to toe BLACK garments while men wear white. It's just age old basic commoner garden sexism!. You women stay home, don't work, have kids, wear what your told, do as your told and don't complain because Mohammed says it's ok to beat you (lightly). Some things need offending That might all be true, but you don't change the view of abusive, domineering men by banning articles of clothing their women wear..the mindset needs to be adjusted first. Why not? Covering the face is not a religious thing, covering hair is, but face isn't. It's a cultural one and part of a culture that is fundamentally incompatible with British values. " Don't give a monkeys whether it's a religious thing or not, to me it's a daft piece of clothing (some) Muslim women wear, it doesn't affect me so I don't need to paraphrase any religious reasons others may choose to attach to it, it isn't my religion, it isn't me whose wearing it and it isn't for me to interfere with those who do.

Bullshit. If a white Christian man told his wife she couldn't leave the house without a male relative then you'd call it abuse. "But back to the OP's question: This cannot in any way be racist as there is no race involved. Arguably Islam itself is not even a race. How do we know what the race of the woman invisible in a Burkha is anyway? As it singles out women I am surprised the feminists haven't taken to the streets with shouts of 'sexism'. Not that it is impossible the person in the Burkha is actually a bloke.... Of course it will only be a matter of time before the Elf & Safetee idiots from the Royal Mail point out the dangers of poking letters in ladies' eyes .... " ??

The desire to educate and reform so that we can make more informed choices other than 'cos God said' is also a value. The desire to live in a society where we strive for the same thing as opposed to being forced to do the same thing is Also a value.

Challenging the behaviour of abusive men of any or no denomination will not be addressed by dictating what women are allowed to wear from a legal perspective, imagine how those men behave behind closed doors.

Sorry but because someone shouts something like that does not make them a racist, covert or otherwise. You just attached the label to suit your opinion IMHO. One could equally argue that your projection of inferred racism means its you playing the race card. Just like Diane Abbott and David Lammy do at every opportunity. Shouting 'racism' does not make it so and here is a question for you - What race are the women wearing Burkhas?
