WEEK THIRTY-TWO!!!

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Hey lovely Fab Crap Runners!

It's Week Thirty-two!!!

.

.

.

How is everyone doing?

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January, a bunch of Fabbers began improving their fitness through running. None of them were natural athletes but they did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (Mrs T used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

FOR MORE EXPERIENCED RUNNERS:

Tell us what you’re up to with your running, your training and your races. Let’s us know your highs and lows. Please cheer on the newbies and give advice if they ask.

.

.

.

FCRC SOCIAL PARKRUN POLL

I've set up a Doodle poll - completely anonymous - to set up our next Social parkrun. It will be at Great Denham (near Bedford), but I plan on scouting out locations for those who cannot get there.

You can vote in the poll here:

https://doodle.com/poll/9n4mmaaptzhy6y2n

I'll leave it open for a couple of weeks.

.

.

.

AND FINALLY:

Who is working towards a specific goal? Tell us your progress.

Well done everyone on your efforts last week. I keep being lazy and not going out for a run

Please remember to say if you are available to attend any of these dates - I am planning on setting up polls for other locations in the next couple of weeks.

I managed to get myself out the door last night for my longest ever run of 25km. I took it very slow because of the heat but I’m really proud of myself

Good work, it always feels great to do a time or distance PB!

You'll be at 30k before you know it, which is virtually a marathon

Well 30k will be next week, only the small matter of the remaining 11.2 km

That's a big jump, shouldn't you be adding about a mile a week maximum?

10% is the recommended weekly increase, with every 4th week a recovery week where you cut your mileage. Perhaps a tad much of an increase ideally, so if you do go for it, make sure you do take it easy and run well within yourself.

It will be 10%, this week will be 16miles, next week; 18 miles. It’s not about time, just distance. Last night due to the heat I added 30 seconds per km which worked well.

Tomorrow is interval training and I’m really not looking forward to that!

Don't do too much too soon. You will overtire yourself for your marathon and could get an injury which means you can't do your marathon.

I’m not pushing myself any further than is necessary, I’m still a little ahead of programme but a lot of my buffer was taken up by my chest cold etc. I’m feeling good though, my rib is healing nicely and I’m over halfway in this cycle now! A nice easy 10k recovery tonight.

I'm only nagging because I want you to enjoy the experience. I know a lot of runners, which includes runners that went too far too soon. It's not a pretty sight.

If your training plan says run 14 miles, don't run 15.5!

I’ve read that Manchester is quite flat and fairly well supported, Milton Keynes is a little later in the year and was very hot this time around so you might want to bear that in mind. Edinburgh is very flat though too.

Manchester claims to be the flattest marathon in the UK. Has a mixed reputation though. I've done MK half and enjoyed it, very well organised and the marathon course is supposedly surprisingly scenic. Bit the flattest course but certainly not hilly.

You could also consider Newport, first one last year, flat and got great reviews or Brighton which is the best full I've ever done.

Firstly, you need to decide whether you want to do a spring or autumn marathon.

Spring means training through the winter, lots of long cold dark runs which really test the motivation.

Autumn means trainng through the summer, which can mean lots of training in very hot conditions, with the added distraction of all those other ways of spending your evenings ie in a pub garden with a cold ale!!

If you go Autumn, then you could do a lot worse than your local Leicester marathon, only real climb is back up New Walk at the end.

And don't be fooled onto thinking flat is easier, gently rolling is often the best as it allows you do use slighty different muscle groups depending on the gradient. Flat is just relentless on the same muscles, they get no rest.

You could also consider Newport, first one last year, flat and got great reviews or Brighton which is the best full I've ever done.

A friend of my suggested Brighton a couple of years ago.. thanks, IL have a look at that.."

You need to decide soon as they close entties a lot earlier than other events. I love it, other than a couple of miles that are grim the course is lively and really well supported

"

The other advantage of spring marathons is that there are far more half marathons and a choice of 20 milers (which only ever seem to be in spring) to incorporate in to a plan

Am I the only person who finds flat running easier? Stick any sort of incline into a run and my legs give in!

The advantage with spring 20 milers is just breaking up the tedium by getting a medal and a top!

I would recommend doing at least 1 event before hand though, even a biggish 10km just to know what to expect, you can waste a lot of nervous energy due to a lack of familiarity.

First solo trail run, studied map, decide route (left left right right left left left) to make my way through hilly woods, then it all went a bit horror movie. I made it out of the woods via a neighbour's garden...

It was more a growing unease a la Evil Dead. There's some very dark practices that take place in Leeds.

The route will improve, wanted to start running it dry so that is not unknown when wet, sludgy, and full of the armies of the undead.

Was looking at a head torch earlier but it took button cellbatteries which barely lasted. This route has footpaths in it.

"Burnham Beeches half today. Was quite amusing to speak to someone who booked it thinking it was Somerset and then got confirmation details that it was Buckinghamshire

One of the toughest halves I've over done and a bit of a shock to the system but made it round in one piece!"

Well done!

Completed day 3 of C25k this morning. First attempt I've made to run in years! I'm having problems with the App i chose though, so can you recommend a good one?

Aim is to get fitter aerobically as I've committed to doing the 400m swim part of a triathlon relay next Spring and I want to do that in under 13 minutes.

Well done starting this, it really does work. NHS app seems to be effective, plus check if there are local groups running a c25k course

I really liked the NHS one. I had Sarah Millican making me laugh as I ran. I must have looked like a right weirdo running.....May be I still do

Keep up the great work

Thanks for the advice folks.

I was trying Sarah Millican on the NHS App too - she was fine in the house! I'll try downloading it a couple more times.

Uuuugggghhhh...in another six hours I have to do 40 minutes of hill sprints. In the Yorkshire Dales. That’s a lot of hills.

Why am I still on the forums at this time, again?

The same reason I am?

Good luck, you are probably doing that around now judging by the time of your post.

I did a nice 4 miles last night with my work colleagues.

Broke my arm not long after completing Couch to 5K, so I've not run in 8 weeks. Just been given the all clear to start exercising again, so it looks like I'm going to be going back a few weeks in the programme to get back up to distance.

I can't wait as I've put on a stone in weight as I haven't been able to cycle, swim or run

Glad to hear you have been given the all clear to start exercising again, but ouch on the arm!

Remember to take it easy. Your muscles will not like you for a few weeks!

Yes, the danger is over training or too much too soon. Take it easy, your strength and fitness will return. The last thing you want is another injury

Not sure if there is a week 33 thread (couldn’t see one). Yesterday I set a new parkrun PB - taking over 1 minute off my previous and below 30 minutes. I am still 5 minutes off my 5K PB set in 2013 but I am so happy with yesterday’s result. This is my best run since deciding I had to stop the alarming decline I have been seeing in my fitness the last couple of years. I hope everyone else who has ran this weekend has had good and injury free runs
