Went to buy a car from a private seller but the guy won’t take bank transfer.. only cash and was very keen on taking a deposit. Car was listed cheap.. I said I will come Monday with cash.. but my sixth sense tells me that car won’t be there tomorrow.. is it a scam? Will be disappear with deposit or a genuine sale but doesn’t want bank transfer?

Please call all detectives and 007

It might be a scam in that there is an issue with the car (stolen, a legal write off, or something similar).

Do a reg check on the car - I think you can check on the dvla website (if not, there is a website you can check).

I know you often do jokey threads, so I hope I haven't fallen for one of them!

The other option is that he's getting ready to do a runner, so needs the cash and there is only a limit you can take out of the hole in the wall per day.

If you decide to go back, take a mechanic with you to give the car a once over.

And yes, now Cakes gone I think you (along witg Tame) are going to take over the mock serious thread starting

My concern is, if it goes wrong at least you have some protection if paid by credit card or transfer. Cash you have f'all!

If it sounds to good to be true then don't touch it. There will be others, so if your sixth sense is going... listen to it!

I think you are correct, he’s planning on taking several deposits on the car and do a runner. Will find out tomorrow and let you all know

I’ve always considered cake my friend so his legacy lives on

Why did that penis leave anyway?! #twat

Your proberbly the 4 5 maybe 6 person to view that car that day all paying a deposit and returning Monday to pick it up. To your surprise there's no car. Check if it's still up for sale or even go round to see if it's still there

If you are genuinely worried..

Do a reg check,

Do a insurance check,

If you are still worried check the VIN numbers on the V5, engine and Windows.

If at that point you still have a bad feeling, walk away.

And never pay a deposit, if he is that serious he will take it all as a lump sum

I didn’t pay a deposit as Alarm bells started to ring.. ad is still up.. will find out tomorrow if he’s still about.. my gut feeling is that he will say it’s sold already or disappear

Sounds like it is probably a faulty one. Sell in cash means no returns process.

Ask to take a photo of him with the car. Ask for photo ID and proof of address.

A wedge is a bundle of paper money.

They won't do anything until a crime is committed and you have proof.

They won't do your detective work for you.

Some traders won't take a bank transfer as certain types are reversible, he may have been caught by a dodgy customer in the past who has taken a car then recallled the transfer.

So let’s say if I pay him deposit and he disappears, what would the police do then?

Not read the whole thread mate. However if it’s been mentioned people may just do you over for the cash when you turn up and then the real owner of the car pleads ignorance.

Or it could be too good to be true with the car being held together by string.

Go careful

If you think you're a victim of crime they should investigate.

Take it you didn't meet at their home to view it?

It’s scam , my mate wanted to buy a R1 , was real cheap , told me to check it , I phoned the guy a few times , he was very odd, could smell a rat , kept asking for a deposit of £50 , so if he gets 10 deposits that’s £500 for the day
