"Beatles"

Just watching the film/documentary by Ron Howard about them ‘ Eight days a week ‘ .

Even watching it with a completely negative view of them , you can’t help but see the sheer brilliant musicianship they had . Over 300 songs written together , so many number ones , so man different styles , and without a doubt the most influential band ever .

Sgt Pepper , consistently voted the best ever album . Hey Jude , Let it Be , Get Back , and the like , I still remember as being such great songs from when they were released . And so would most people from the age of 50 plus .

And those over 60 will remember everything from Please please me , A hard day’s night , Help , etc.....

So how can they be over rated ?

It’s like saying Motzart and Beethoven are shit

Mucisians always seem to get much more stick than other creative types ... how often do you see artists or dancers called pure shite because its not to your taste? They seem to be popular enough (or were in their time) to rake in plenty cash from their “pure shite” so someone likes it

They split up in 1969 , almost 50 years ago !

The white album had some track s that still sound great ( aswell as a few shit ones ) , but listen to Sgt Pepper , again sounds great today . As does Let it Be , and so many others .

Just out of interest , which artists from the sixties do you think aren’t shite ?

I can only guess you haven’t listened to one then , and I’m sat here asking myself why I’m even getting involved in this thread .

The question was who are the most over rated bands , and as I sad in a previous post , to say the Beatles is like saying Motzart and Beethoven were over rated .

I can kind of understand it when someone says they don’t care for certain types of music , but the Beatles have such an array of different types to offer . And they were game changers for a generation .

"Didn’t say there wasn’t good music or good artists in the 60s. Just not the beatles"

A lot of bands and individual singers owe their existence to The Beatles.

Even some of the "greats" like Sinatra, Michael Jackson, and writers like Quincy Jones & Burt Bacharach rated The Beatles very highly as influential, musically.

But it's probably a Generational thing. If you didn't grow up in their era, you may not fully appreciate their worth. Each to their own!

There and to the left a bit

Rather than name overrated artists I think this has actually turned into a "name artists you don't like" thread - whilst I personally don't like either Elvis or Michael Jackson and nor do I personally understand the fuss about them both were obviously talented and appealed to millions the world over, and their music has endured the test of time so can't be classed as overrated - likewise with The Beatles, The Stones and others named.

The only artists that overrated applies to in my book are the manufactured X Factor types who are hyped beyond belief only to disappear as quickly as they appeared.

I ran a record shop for 15 years and I whilst I realise it doesn't make me an expert on music, I definitely learned a lot about music tastes.

For example, if somebody likes the Birdie song, who am I to say it's shit. I watched my Grandmother in a care home dancing to it and the pleasure on her face will always be a lovely memory.

I always say now....it's not my taste rather than 'its shit'

We all have our favourites and music is a wonderful pleasure in life!

"

Prince"

Incorrect. Ignore the pop stuff, the man was a genius. Wrote, produced, arranged his own music, played 27 instruments, danced like a machine and confused the hell out of everyone. 20th century Mozart.

As for folk Beatles bitching, c'mon! The structure of the majority of their work still holds up today.

But I agree with Oasis. The sound of Noel Gallagher dry humping John Lennon's corpse.

There are no overrated bands just bands that you don’t personally like.

Most of the names here have sold 10s of millions of albums and sold out huge stadiums so for their fans they obviously strike the right chord.

It’s not just they’re nothing special- they couldn’t play their instruments, couldn’t sing. Lyrically wrote rubbish pop tunes that would be berated today. They were just the first mass marketed, media hyped boy band and because of that people think you should like them.

What they brought to the music world wasn’t great music talent or musically challenging. It was how it was marketed and how it was dealt with by the media. And that had nothing to do with them personally.

Ed Sheeran is mediocre at best, awful music for the masses who lap up this shite, how he’s got so massive I’ll never know, there’s so many more talented singer songwriters who don’t get the recognition.

And I bet all the people saying The Beatles are over rated are Ed Sheeran fans.

If a see a woman on tinder and her Favorite tune is ‘Shape of you’ by him, I swipe left.

"Whatever happen to music?"

There is so many amazing artists out there but you won’t find them on radio one or in the charts. I go to so many gigs and love festivals. Many bands I love, most people won’t know about and I love that. I hate current popular music.

Any kind of boyband/ girlband are overrated. I loved John Lennon as a songwriter and prefer his solo stuff, I always loved the simplicity of it but the deeper meaning also. Not a massive fan of the Beatles. I’m more a led zeppelin or Rolling Stones fan.

Now hold on just a cotton picking minute don't you go dissing Suggs and co that's fighting talk

(And I know that's not what you meant (Errr I think!!) just amused me when I thought of it)

In all seriousness though, as I said upthread this appears to be more a "name artists you don't like" thread than those who are overrated - any artist that has endured over a significant period of time and has a huge fan base surely can't be truly overrated even if you don't like them personally - so for me the only overrated artists are those that appear, are huge for a brief period of time then disappear again and don't leave any kind of lasting impression such as most X Factor artists or the likes of Bros

I agree in like I said it’s become “music I don’t like”

But I wouldn’t necessarily even classify X factor type artists in there. They’re not exactly rated in the 1st instance. Just having their 15 minutes of fame.

Music is a bit like being on here.

We all have our tastes, likes and dislikes.

The world would be a boring place if wecall followed the same trends and tastes.

We like all kinds of music from classical to electro rock, don’t get reggae though as it’s just the same beat added to different lyrics.

Glad to see Oasis and Coldplay have featured a lot on this thread I'd add Robbie Williams and all those rappers who came along in the 00s who couldn't rap.

Prodigy were also total hacks. Compare anything they did with real underground tekno and it just blows them away. Oakenfold, Sasha, Tong and all that crap David Guetta. Total total shit dance music that's given real dance music a bad name but for some reason is super popular. Arghhh
