"The Home Office has been branded ‘sexist’ for telling parents who do not share the same surname with their children to provide extra documentation to get through passport control faster.

In a tweet, the Home Office said: ‘If your family has different surnames, please bring birth or adoption certificates to help get through passport control quicker.’

The policy aims to prevent people trafficking and child exploitation, but people have pointed out that unmarried women with children who have taken their father’s surname, or those who have chosen to keep their maiden name after marriage, could be forced to carry the vital documents, leaving them susceptible to loss or theft."

Is it 'sexist'? Do you think it's a good idea?

I think its a good idea..

Especially if it gets people through customs quicker..

I still go by my married name even though I am divorced, so as not to make my child feel like he is adopted (his description not mine)

How can it be sexist?

They have to prove the adult taking the child out of the country is allowed to take them.

Who branded them [the Home Office] sexist?

Was it the metro or or the metro reporting that ‘the home office have been branded sexist’?

It most certainly isn’t sexist by any definition I can think of.

It’s a great idea. Hope it speeds things up.

Possibly The Metro saying it's a sexist idea, not sure.

There's angry Twitter responses on the article from people that think it's a bad idea.

I don't know what they are angry for.

Seems sensible.

It would apply equally to a father accompanied by a child who does not share his surname. So no, not sexist.

What about grandparents with grandchildren ?

How can safeguarding children be branded sexist lol. Parents would soon be up in arms if their child was taken out of the country without their permission because extra checks were not in place.

Perhaps people should look up what sexism actually is...

it’s not sexist, it seems to make sense to me that children traveling with adults that don’t have the same name are being further checked. That the only reasoning is that the documents might get lost is laughable!

In what way is it sexist. The rule applies to both sexes so how can it possibly be sexist. It’s common sense otherwise any adult could take any child out of the country.

I'm not going to take my passport on holiday anymore in case it gets lost.

I haven’t heard this before, thanks for the heads up! I can see why they might do it but it will be yet another thing to remember now when going away! My children have both mine and their mum’s last names so we will have to deal with that. It will affect us both so in this instance not sexist just a hassle
