The addiction of Marxism is that it's complaints about Capitalism are really fucking compelling. The trouble is that it's solutions to those problems have been, let's just say, a little off (like millions of people dead "off").

That leaves me half lefty (agreeing with Marx's critique and accepting Chomsky's insanely footnoted criticisms)... and half something else... a bit Adam Smith... probably anarchist maybe... but definitely not libertarian. Those guys are dangerous fools

human nature...nope thats not the reason socialism/communism fail.

what fails is capitalism.

with advances in technology by the next decade..millions of people will be displaced from jobs that just arent needed to be done by humans.

Finite industrial resources are dwindling- there is only so much we can take.

removing a monetary system and approaching new angles on sustainability is really our only real hope for future generations.

While we dont live in a jetsons area as predicted by popular entertainment...we now have pretty much good evidence technology is rapidly improving and resources becoming scarce.

This isnt about left/right/whatever...it is simply just a shift in human progress that will be needed...

the zeitgeist movement and the venus project have been proposing ideas and theories that aim to remove the need for a capitalist world,a system that will be breaking down society as we know it-and thats going to be due to the tech advancements and job losses that are inevitable in the coming years.

I agree that socialism is perfect in consept just when people get into power they just forget the people, their eyes light up and the human greed takes over totally just look at the political parties we have the greed first greed second greed last be open how many of the parties look after the people and i dont mean what we pay heavily for in taxes i mean in freedom to have equal rights in law and social status plus our right to be taken notice of with our vote these people dont exist remember this at election time think do they actually deserve to be in power

Socialism is not lauded as perfect in theory or practice and no one on the "Left" thinks socialism is perfect, the idea is that with proper safe-guards (Just like in a capitalistic world; think taxing, regulation and transparency with democratic institutions) it could work better than capitalism...

To be honest i think what we want isn't out of this world radical left marxism at the moment, less wealth inequality, better wages and protections for the working class etc.

I mean seriously.. Jeff Bezos doesn't need £150 billion while his workers piss in bottles and Facebook can't go untaxed while the NHS continues to deteriorate...

And please do your research into how "sOciAList VeNEzUElA" - Marxism, leninism and socialism.

I hate that Venezuela is seen as a natural experiment in the effectiveness of socialist economics, and the catastrophic results are treated as definitive proof that left ideas are recipes for calamity.

Like many other examples of radically authoritarian “socialist” regimes, the collapse of Venezuela tells us a lot more about the problems of dictatorship, corruption, and incompetence than it does about “socialism.”

I drive in Portsmouth quite a bit and can tell you from that, and the way people park in a cramped town, not caring about leaving space when if they moved a bit there would be room for another car; it is dog eat dog, the majority of people being 'I'm all right jack'

If a person puts twice as much work and effort into something, they are entitled to get twice as much out.

In this way capitalism can be fair. Equality and fairness are not necessarily the same thing.

Though as with socialism, both in theory seem to end up with a greedy 1% having an unfair advantage over the rest.

The problem with capitalism isn't capitalism, it's uncensored capitalism.If the governments were independent, free from corporate lobbying and fair to all (I guess a bit more socialist) then the capitalism would be managed and kept in check with regulations preventing extremes, things like the living wage, etc. It needs to be a balance, too much of anything is dangerous, socialism or capitalism. Can't see it happening though as we are being systematically encouraged not to care. Look at the reality of places like India or Cuba:- The few 'haves' whether government or rich, don't want to care, and the 'have nots' aka everyone else are easily replaceable and suffer.

It is still capitalism. It's late stage capitalism and it's the natural progression of unfiltered capitalism. All the wealth and resources accumulate in a very small percentage of the populace. Normally if wealth inequality isn't too bad then people are usually happy with the system as is. However, wealth inequality is the worst it's been and people are starting to look at the system as being rigged which generally doesn't end well for the people at the top...

They're economic terms.

So socialism is basically everyone shares the wealth. The people who work and make things also own the means of doing it, so the people working in a factory also own some share of it. In extreme cases there's no wealth inequality. Things like universal healthcare (NHS) are considered socialist.

Capitalism is more like what you know. The people who work and make things don't own the means of doing it, the means is owned by someone who had enough wealth to say build the factory. So the workers are paid and any profits made thereafter goes to the owner.

Both have their positives and negatives. Socialism is criticised for not working with real world scenarios due to greed. Free market capitalism is criticised for creating massive wealth inequality, like we have today.

I guess one way of looking at socialism is a bit like the rail network. Marx showed that the common man would always be a slave if, in order to run his trains, he had to use a private companies rail lines. In short, unless the workers owned the mechanisms of production they'd have to pay the rich owners for the privilege of working on them. Hence why it's best for the rail track itself to be in public ownership so that individuals can't be extorted when needing to make use of it. That's one of the principles.

On the Capitalist side... Capitalism thrives on the edge of legality. If you set up a system where greed is good and it's a free for all with every man for himself people soon start to feel for the boundaries of the sand pit. This is because this free for all still takes place in a society ordered by rules and laws. In a competitive environment it is natural that the majority of the competition will take place in the middle of this legal enclosure. But those who take more risks and bend the rules a bit can easily outmanoeuvre the rest of the competition and maximise profits. As such, it is inevitable that in a Capitalist system successful companies will compete each other closer and closer towards the line of illegality. In short, in Capitalism it pays to be a crook

I agree with what you've said here. The sooner we reign in these big companies the better for all concerned. We should make them more socially responsible. Tax avoidance is lauded as being clever, but that is money that should be being spent on making the country better for all of us - whether that is healthcare services, infrastructure or other areas needing improvement. It's great that we can all get stuff delivered next-day or see what our friends are having for dinner from our phones, but what is the actual cost of this.

I think it’s a crying shame that we really have no idea what it would be like to live in a socialist country . I know certain countries have found it impossible to make it work , but in theory it would and could make everything so much fairer .

Is there anyone who thinks it’s fair that a nurse who cares for someone , cleaning them , giving them dignity and basically doing what their own family don’t want to do , gets a fraction of the wage that some banker gets , or software developer ?

What if the doctors and physicians were paid the same to train as when they qualify , an the same applies to all professions . The plumber , the electrician , the builder , the painter , the nurse , the shop worker all got about the same . Surely they all deserve the same don’t they ? If you think about it 40 hours work is the same whatever you do really . So why should there be such a difference ?

1% of the worlds population have 95% of the worlds wealth I believe . How crazy is that ?

Maybe it’s just recent health issues ( a heart attack ) and the realisation that we are so vulnerable , and my age , but it’s a mad , mad world we live in .

The recent expose showing how companies like Facebook , Amazon , and google pay next to no tax hardly makes any sense either .

We keep getting back to this same old equality of outcome for all, it's complete nonsense, how can somebody who's worked there arse of through university be earning the same as somebody who pissed away those same years living it large!.

Where's the fairness in that?

Humans are intrinsically hierarchical. It’s a natural consequence of the family/tribe.

So we have leaders and followers, so ultimately socialism will always fail. Think that’s what I was getting at, I’ll have another few weeks to think about it.
