Wolf whistling can now be reported as a hate crime if the person it is directed at feels intimidated or degraded by it

I have to log off but I do hope this doesn't turn into one of those long drawn out debates about political correctness gone mad and the subjugation and sexual harassment of women and yes I know women do it to men too.

I hope when I look back later that people have kept it relevant......

If someone whistled at me i'd laugh. It'd make my day , even tho at my age i'd think they were having a bit of fun.

When it happened when I was very young. My heart would beat with fear, i'd avoid eye contact and try to get ahead fast without looking at people.

In my mid years I say I took it in my stride but thought that the blokes doing it were juveniles and just to be ignored or if necessary got a put down but most times I just let the monkeys play.

In terms of my political stance i'd say 'keep it out of the work place and treat co- workers with respect for the work that they do' ........

Other than that an appreciation of how someone looks ( in safe company ) is a pleasure and part of life's fun.

Well clearly it’s not a very feminist action to wolf whistle at a woman in the street , and it can be upsetting for some . I’m not sure why it’s upsetting but it is , so I guess it’s not acceptable behaviour .

Now I have to contradict myself...... shit....

I go to a group meeting every couple of weeks.... one bloke there always says something like ....' looking good Dee...my type of woman .....fknell I would...etc.

Makes my flesh crawl. I haven't said anything yet.. I have resisted him and told him no a few times but never told him that I find his behaviour 'creepy', 'lecherous' , juvenile, embarrasing, sad and I wish he'd fucking stop it ? Shall I ?

And ..........given that im not shy, why don't I tell him like it is ?

Also........ one of my neighbours always makes sexual comments to me. Even in front of his wife. He sees them as jokes..... I just never go anywhere near their door , nor do I enjoy the things he says....... Why haven't I told him exactly how I feel ? Tho he has had a good mouthful ( no pun intended )

Clumsy sexual comments are not complimentary...... they make me view men in a certain way that's for sure.

I agree , and to be fair it rarely happens these days . I doubt too many builders whistle at women who don’t court the attention , especially with harassment laws being in place .

But if women are posing , as you so succinctly put it , they would be dissapointed if it didn’t happen !

I like being whistled at.. It doesn't happen often but even when I was young enough and let's face it attractive enough to warrant such whistles I never felt intimidated by it.. In fact an I used to walk my dogs past one site for several month I eventually actually made a couple of friends.

I think in this day and age everyone's just got a bit precious..

If women feel uncomfortable and afraid perhaps they should just consider what exactly do they thinks going to actually happen? Nothing at all I would imagine.. Also I would and have done exactly the same thing at guys... All's fair after all... Although quite often they are more likely to "get their cock out for the girls "

I don't mind being whistled at per se (though it doesn't happen much these days as I'm getting more invisible the older I get).

What I mind is that if I have the temerity to ignore it, *some* men then feel entitled to shout a load of verbal abuse after you - and sometimes that *can* feel embarrassing and intimidating. Much like when you get abuse on here from a minority whose egos don't like rejection.

What about the one where they orchestrate him getting wet with the drink and taking his top off? I'd imagine there'd be a few complaints if the genders were reversed.

I used to hate being wolf whistled at, down to a lack of self-confidence I think. Now that I'm more confident and enjoy male attention, it never happens! My husband is a builder and I know they have an appreciative look at an attractive lady, but it's not considered socially acceptable to cat call/wolf whistle any more.

My current view based purely on my age, if this was to happen to me now I’d be strutting past inwardly whooping

My teenage daughter on the other hand would be embarrassed and possibly upset by that kind of behaviour, and my protective instinct would flip to raging!!

So I suppose I’m saying for me it’s acceptable age dependant, not helpful if you’re bloke debating whether to whistle or not.

The idea of the 'ad' is that the joke is then on them cos as he takes his shirt off he reveals a six pack, the laughter stops, their jaws drop, he walks off with a 'stick that in your pipe' look on his face.

I had a man in a van wolf whistle at me recently and it was a nice boost, most building sites nowadays I don’t hear it from even when there is an obviously attractive woman walk past. I think the older I’ve got the less it’s bothered me. But I understand that not every woman is comfortable with it x

Mostly today’s generation of buider blokes are too busy looking at phones and comparing their muscles/tattoos/tans to notice a fitty walk past.

I’m part of a dying breed, although whistling has never been my style.

When I was in my teens n 20s I hated it, I was intimidated by a large group of men laughing and jeering him on. There were many times I took a longer way round just to avoid them.

Some women find it complimentary, but equally some find it offensive and intimidating.

I think it also depends on your personal experience. A friend of mine was subjected to a sexual attack as a girl and if she has men shouting suggestive comments at her or whistling as she walks alone she feels extremely vulnerable and anxious.

Some of them have even got angry and shouted at her to ‘smile love’ when she looked away from them or didn’t appear happy about their advances.

Incredibly obnoxious, insensitive, morons.

Just walking home from work last week three guys in a van going in the opposite direction felt the need to shout comments about my "camel toe" at me across for lanes of traffic.

It was unwanted and embarrassing, especially in front of a bus stop full of people.

Is it the actual act of being whistled at that's uncomfortable or the situation? If the woman was walking by a few builders or walking by Tom hardy (other guys are available) and got a whistle would it feel as uncomfortable?

It used to bother me, not so much that I'd change the way I walked as I never knew if they would be there the next time I went by, but made me feel intimidated/embarrassed. Now I'm older I just think they need to grow up and actually speak to the girl if they're actually interested.

Back in the 80's I worked on a couple high rises in San Francisco, California. Between the 2nd and 4th floors, it was an everyday thing that a lot of workers would sit at the edge of the building and watch the people below. It was very common for the guy's to be whistling down at the women as they walked by below. There were a couple of guys who went so far as to toss pieces of sandwiches or other small items down at the women and others. For a few weeks, there was a young lady who came by every day and would flaunt herself at the guys, to the extent that, a couple days, she wore a top that she could either raise it and expose her boobs, or, lower the front to do the same. Everyday, the Super wouldn't warn everyone NOT to be whistling or tossing stuff down at people. There were everyday complaints to this happening and even worst things happening. So, yes, I believe and know this is an everyday thing where there is a multi story building being built and a rowed walking by every day.

Since this particular person did not state everything about his story, what was posted is very true.

There was 1 day where, in the building just across the street from our building and up on the 7th floor, several of us watched as a "boss" and his secretary screwed with her up against the window, bent over with her hands planted on the window and him plowing her from behind.. They even got a "Standing Ovation" for their performance. It was never repeated, but, there were all kinds of stuff going on all around us.

Found this online, I wonder how they explain this to their boss if they have one or their other half.

'A group of builders who were meant to be upgrading a gastropub have been sacked for wolf-whistling at women passing by.

Owners of the venue revealed they had taken the extreme step after being told about the "deplorable" behaviour of some of the men working for on the building.'

I have seen many a woman cringe when she gets wolf whistled at, but if it causes some one to change their route somewhere it definately isn't right.
