it’s diesel and it’s black smoke which apparently is carbon

most probably been 're mapped. I have a vw golf that's been 're mapped and that smokes loads but it's nothing to worry about.

Black is excess fuel, could have been remapped, basics check the air filter, could be blocked, if not it needs a garage to look at it, its an MOT fail if its excessive. and the fuel consumption will be high

Quite often with diesels, black smoke when accelerating can be down to the fuel filter.

If it’s one you’ve just bought and the diesel hasn’t been driven hard much the first thing is to take it for a bit of a thrash.

Find a dual carriageway when it’s quiet and accelerate up the slip road with the accelerator hard down in 2nd, third gear and then onto the dual carriageway still with your foot to the floor in 4th. Pull off at the next exit and do it again.

Keep an eye on the temperature gauge and any warning lights and of course stop if there’s a problem but do that hard acceleration about 4 times and then see if it’s any better the next day.

It would certainly be worth putting some fuel system cleaner in your tank and taking it for a drive before spending any real money on it.

fuel cleaners can cause more problems for the modern car sends ecu in to overdrive, give it a good run out at temperature, may clear it's self out but most likely down to fuel filter x

Like other posters have said, it most likely needs a good drive, get the exhaust nice and hit and let the dpf go into regen mode, probably a straight motorway run of about 20 miles at around 60-70pmh, keepin the throttle as steady as poss.

It's a 2006, so it won't be equipped with AdBlue!

If you look on the VW forums, this is a common problem. It seems to relate to a split hose. Look at all the hoses relating to the turbo.

If it isn't the hoses, ask a garage to check the EGR valve and if that is not sticking, then you probably need a new intercooler.

on the road to nowhere in particular

Check easy things first

1 give it a blast as described

2 check air filter

3 check fuel filter

4 check egr valve

2,3and 4 are garage jobs. Not over expensive

Or injectors, quite common on them as well.

Oil temp needs to be hot if its an auto then in sports mode too for the whole journey.

Get it serviced, new oil, new filters etc. Perhaps it hasn’t been done for a while.

Try a diesel fuel additive and give it a blast up the motorway

Maybe a service ...oil and filters could be dirty

In line fuel filters need changing too .

Is the cam belt or chain up to date .

And the tensioner ...

All the above are inexpensive it's just finding a decent old school mechanic

I wouldn't use a garage

If you want to drive it to enfield my mechanic is proper old school and very thorough and only £20 an hour
