"They probably need it, but they don’t deserve it. " This unfortunately. I have family in Bury and they have mentioned that there is a lot of ill will against these lads. I did have a FFS moment when I read that one of their mothers are moaning that it is spoiling her son's 16th Birthday weekend, they have family coming for a big party

"It makes me seethe to think of sparse police resources being used to protect vile pathetic bullies like that (and any number of similarly undeserving and unpleasant people). However the alternative - letting people take the law into their own hands - isn't acceptable either and the police would then have an even bigger mess to clear up. That's not to say I wouldn't love them to get a taste of their own medicine and to experience a fraction of the fear and humiliation that woman felt. But that'd make 'us' just as bad as them. I obviously hope they're lawfully punished and suspect the damage to their reputations (which could affect work, relationships etc) will probably be an added punishment 'above and beyond sentencing in the future. " Indeed, but then police resources wouldn't be needed to protect them if people didn't think mob justice a good idea...

"So the 4 youths who egged and floured a disabled wonan in a public park then took a selfie are asking for police protection. Should they get it?" Morally, no, but unfortunately, criminals are just as entitled to receive protection. However, what may mitigate the cost would be them to fund it themselves, i.e. community service, for example.

"It depends if there is a real risk they will be attacked if they aren't protected. If so, the police are obliged to protect them and if they didn't they could be sued. Being punished for crimes you committed does not mean you are not entitled to protection against crime. " This.

It makes me feel sick what they did but i also believe two wrongs dont make a right. I think they should be sent to an adult prison and the crime be made known. Let them no what its like to feel scared and vulnerable

I am struggling to see how that is connected to my comment so a bit unsure...do you mean if my kid had broken the law would I lie and cover for them to the police?

" That would be me. I would drag my little darlin' down the police station. Had there been a B'day party planned it would be cancelled, presents returned to the shop. And that would be for just posing for the pic, doesn't matter if they threw the flour. Just the fact that they found the act acceptable would seriously piss me off.

This is exactly what I would do too if I was a parent. I have friends who have done practically the same for a criminal act their child committed.

Lots of known scumbags are constantly at risk from other scumbags and they don't warrant police protection. These arseholes can confine themselves to their homes, pay for their own private security for the little that that's worth and call the police if they have any trouble. If they aren't too busy they'll be along in due course..

"No, people who break the law don’t deserve protection from it. " Maybe not, but the law doesn't allow those who disapprove of their actions to break it? They deserve to be publicly shamed, but none of us have the right to act outside it in lynch mob mentality?

"As an aside I think people are over estimating what police protection actually means. They won't be in a safe house. There won;t have an officer outside their house. There will just be a marker on their address and maybe phone numbers that if there's a 999 call it's an urgent priority. " yes. Ive found out what "police protection" they will be entitled too

"Protection or not, these kids will get a proper kicking at some point. Of course and as I've said it's inevitable these kids will get what's coming to them. Protection wonlt change that. And no one outside their parents will really give a fuck. Indifference is one thing, But celebrating tor encouraging that (as many are) is wrong and as a society if the police don't try and prevent that from happening, that's wrong

I don't think the family complaining that all of this is ruining one of the suspect's birthday should be given air time. There appears to be a skewed sense of entitlement for their 'little prince'.

From experience, be amazed if case even makes it to court. The CPS may decide to run it to make an example of them....usually means slap on wrists, don't do it again. As for protection, the above is how it'll work....the urgent priority will be treated 'very urgently' too
