It depends if there is a real risk they will be attacked if they aren't protected. If so, the police are obliged to protect them and if they didn't they could be sued.

Being punished for crimes you committed does not mean you are not entitled to protection against crime.

They don’t deserve but they will get it as does everybody who is under threat. The protection will be low level, hourly drive bys etc and target hardening of their houses such as fire proofing etc. If somebody really wanted to hurt them then the protection offered won’t stop them.

But my head says yes, as chances are they could actually get seriously harmed, and maybe not just them but any innocent family members or friends with them at the time.

Minimal protection, enough to keep them safe until court, where hopefully the law won't be an ass.... Then jail.

Where they'll probably get a far worse punishment dished out on them... Shame

It makes me seethe to think of sparse police resources being used to protect vile pathetic bullies like that (and any number of similarly undeserving and unpleasant people). However the alternative - letting people take the law into their own hands - isn't acceptable either and the police would then have an even bigger mess to clear up.

That's not to say I wouldn't love them to get a taste of their own medicine and to experience a fraction of the fear and humiliation that woman felt. But that'd make 'us' just as bad as them. I obviously hope they're lawfully punished and suspect the damage to their reputations (which could affect work, relationships etc) will probably be an added punishment 'above and beyond sentencing in the future.

Morally, no, but unfortunately, criminals are just as entitled to receive protection.

However, what may mitigate the cost would be them to fund it themselves, i.e. community service, for example.

But the whole ethos of law and order in the UK is to treat everyone equally and uphold the law and protect life and keep the peace.

Nope. Lots of known scumbags are constantly at risk from other scumbags and they don't warrant police protection. These arseholes can confine themselves to their homes, pay for their own private security for the little that that's worth and call the police if they have any trouble. If they aren't too busy they'll be along in due course..

As an aside I think people are over estimating what police protection actually means. They won't be in a safe house. There won;t have an officer outside their house. There will just be a marker on their address and maybe phone numbers that if there's a 999 call it's an urgent priority.

From experience, be amazed if case even makes it to court. The CPS may decide to run it to make an example of them....usually means slap on wrists, don't do it again.

As for protection, the above is how it'll work....the urgent priority will be treated 'very urgently' too

These newspapers report this story , and then people are in uproar at the behaviour of the teenage gobs who would do such a thing . Without these papers we wouldn’t know it happened . So it’s a good thing we have them in my opinion .

Do I think they should have police protection ? No , not for a second . They should be named , shamed , and have flour and rotten fruit thrown at them in public stocks outside the town hall .
