When a guy says he has high standards

What exactly does he mean, and not on fab I'm talking about real life, like if a guy was talking to another guy about dating and past relationships and how they met their last partners etc. If a guy says to another guy in general conversation that they have high standards when looking for a date/partner what do they mean?

My ex husband is a great guy and regardless of why we broke up (we still love each other) i won’t settle for anything less as was treated so well. I’ve met a few guys since but not one gave me the confidence I would be treated as well as I was. I don’t mean material things. It was the small things. I have very high standards now and won’t settle for anything less.

I agree there's nothing wrong with anyone saying it. Although reading this thread it seems there are a lot of folk who disagree that guys can have standards..

I'm happy to say I do have standards and there are many facets to that statement and if I have to stay single and go without I'd prefer that than to compromise and settle for second best.

Also the guy has only been single 5 months or so and when speaking to the other guy he said he was looking for a relationship.

For me personally when I say I have high standards it just means I have certain attributes I like the guy to have, for example good looks and also used to be penis size but I'm no longer arsed about length as long as the girth is there. When I've said to a guy that I'm fussy or whatever I've meant it in a kind of complimentary way to the guy, know what I mean?

If he thinks his are higher than others then good luck to him, but I don’t think it’ll get him any further than anyone else.

Anyway I was talking to Billy-Bob today who said he was talking to guy I fancy on Friday and bless him he's trying to dig but without obviously mentioning me and he said they were talking about past relationships and how they met their other halves, how guy I fancy said he didn't want to go down the online dating route and said that things tend to work better when people meet through mutual friends or hobbies etc. Billy-Bob said guy I fancy told him that he wasn't looking for someone cos he wants a gf again but said he has high standards. Now he know she I talk to Billy-Bob all the time, so was the high standards thing to show off or as a way to subtly say look tell her I have high standards so don't bother, but then he also said he's looking for someone.

My friend was in school with him and said he was a good boy, always respectful, very sporty and was in all the top sets so bit of a boffin kind of thing.

I think he knows I'm into him but like he's never been down the online dating route, like when I've had conversations in the past about guys I've met on tinder (I haven't said I'm on here I've said guys I've met have been off there) he's always said you should get off there cos what he's heard off his mates is that guys only want one thing on sites like that, oh if he knew I was on here!

Just need out schedules to align and I will ask him if we can do something together. Like Billy-Bob said he asked him if I was seeing anyone and billybob said no I know that she is not, then asked me if next time he sees guy I fancy if he can just bloody tell him I'm attracted to him but I said no and that I need to do it myself. That's the right way isn't it.

I'd say I've got quite high standards, I've dated some very good looking women over the years and it kind of set the bar for me. I wouldn't get into a relationship with someone based purely on looks but they are the first thing that makes me want to get to know them better and see if the personality is good too (often it's not but I still hold out hope!)

...Up on the Downs

"One person’s high standards are another one’s bog standard; only he can quantify what he means by the phrase. "

Exactly, it could be looks, or morality, or character, or career choice...... any number of things

I would include all sorts of things like that.

"If a man said that I'd think he was only going to date a woman who:

- is very good looking

- has good grooming

- is from a good family

- lives off a substantial trust fund

- has a good education

- has a perfect body

- is a virgin

"

This.

I would assume it means how she is as a person and how she carries herself, rather than being solely based on looks.

If I was single and looking to date women with the view of things progressing into a relationship then absolutely I’d have high standards.

Why wouldn’t you?

It doesn’t necessarily mean she’s needs to be a size 8 and have £100k stashed in the bank.

It means I’d have to find her both physically and mentally attractive and she had her shit together.

Working all week just to have enough to be a weekend millionaire in the local cocktail lounge getting absolutely twatted would not be the standard I’d be looking for.......I know loads of gorgeous looking women who live exactly like that.......I wouldn’t date any of them. Standards isn’t just about looks.

"This is not something I have heard many say in real life. Plenty on fab seem to state it though. It just sounds pretentious to even me. And I like dauphinoise potatoes!

They may not actualy say that but you know what they mean when they talk about women they dont want.

A simple "my sausage ain't going there" would suffice then"

I was thinking of men who say they dont want to have a relationship with anyone who isnt slim, who has got kids or who hasnt got a good job.
