I use Facebook for friends / family. Insta for photo sharing, opinions on Twitter make me laugh / can be interesting & LinkedIn for work.

I don’t necessarily use all of them all of the time. Like here I can quite easily do without for periods of time.

I have FB with an embarrassingly tiny number of friends. It's a good way of keeping in touch with my far flung family.

I used to have a Twitter account but I made a fairly innocuous remark disagreeing with a "celebrity" and the remarks aimed at me by their fans were shocking. A person who gave a damn what strangers on the net said about them would have been devastated. I thought "meh" and blocked the celebrity then deleted my account a couple of months later.

I think social media has good and bad sides to it and the side we see depends on how we use it. I also think we need to know when to turn our backs on it.

the people that use social media, can be drawn into it too much. though sadly it's one of the best media to notify people you dont even know..about your feelings or things that are affecting you.

My sister died in May, for her funeral we had hundreds show for her, alot we didnt know...people we didnt know like college friends etc..Some of these people traveled really far..she must have meant something to them.

The crux is, as a medium when used correctly, facebook(or the most popular medium at the time)is a fantastic thing..though only a couple of hours at most should be needed per day.

I thought of a good social experiment I'd like to see someone do. Take a group of young people who happily share private gossip on Facebook and who are indifferent on the issue of privacy and who say "if you've got nothing to hide then why worry?". Agree with them that they're going to talk about a set of things that are private to them but they would happily share with each other on Facebook. Then shepherd them into a room to do this. Except in the room is either a random adult, a parent, a teacher, or a boss who will listen in to it all. Then monitor how much they clam up.

Then make it clear to them that they do indeed mind having someone listening into their most private secrets. But that the reason why they don't mind doing it on Facebook is because this process of listening in is invisible.

It's going on.

You should be uncomfortable with it.

But you aren't because it's hidden.

I use Facebook like an electronic version of the scrap book I had growing up as a kid - a place to store your memories and interesting things.

The "on this day" feature is great - it brings back everything you posted on that day on every year you've been using it.

That alone keeps me there, more so than keeping in touch.

If this was being done in Indonesia. You *know* others have already done it right? Can you think of any mass agitations that may have been provoked by being first faked or whipped up by social media platforms anywhere around the world that may have been concocted in the hope of benefitting America or Russia or others? This is the dangerous rot that's got to stop. Perhaps social media products should be banned? A quote from the end of the article...

Researcher Rasidi said buzzer teams operate in the same way as gossip.

“When everyone is talking about the same thing you might think that maybe it’s true, maybe there is some merit to it. That is where the impact lies.”

Have none, and what I’ve been predicting for years is finally happening, the realisation that people finally waking up to how these companies you pay nothing to to use their service became so rich, that people waking up to the fact that social media drive their lives rather than their life driving social media. This week all the social media sites lost billions as people wake up to the dangers its created, for no real benefit to the human race.

It’s just as easy to send an email(just don’t use google mail) , text, or make a phone call to share pictures stories etc with far flung friends or families, phot sharing albums, eaisly created on your phone, group chat.

We will see in about 10 years(if they exist) the effects of the this age on children who have grown up on its reliance, and how things come back to haunt them in their professional or personal lives, from what may have been a naive child hood decision, but the social acceptance of which is no longer current, but the social media view will seemjust as current today, we’ve already seen some high profile cases of people’s social media history catching up with them, and often for what looked like innocent posts(and probably were at the time)

Digital Social Media is neither good or bad; it's a platform where human interaction creates the content that we see and often don't see, and it's the behaviour of humans that are making this networks evolve. Including the use of this site!

I only use the platforms for business as part of my companies job is to create leads for our clients, who pay to have their products and service presented in front of a targeted market. It's similar to what advertising was in the 50's, only this time it's much faster and much more intelligent.

It would be nieve to say it doesn't have dangers, and unfortunately, the risks are created by those who do not pay enough due diligence to safeguard themselves. They post without thinking! None of the platforms would have existed without people's drive for the Capital Vices (aka The Seven Deadly Sins)

As a parent, with millennials, we've made it part of our job educate and often monitor what our children watch, post and share and allowing enough freedom for them to learn. If children are falling to the dangers then who is to blame? We placed porn magazines on the top shelves back in the day to help safeguard our children, why is it so hard to keep our children safe today? Parents need to look parenting on a different level than ever before and stop blaming DSM for their shortfalls. The same goes for adults.

It's true the numbers of specific platforms are falling but not enough for these platforms to crumble, and only because the next generation of curious humans is around the corner.

Could this be the birth of the real Skynet?
