Spot on, no other rap was played, not even on the radio, that only started to change a bit in like 1998 and that was r&b, couldn't even go to a bar or club as they never played proper hip hop

"Sounds like the record jumped when you wrote the thread title OP My fascination with Hip Hop started with watching the Breakdance and Beat Street films and listening to the Electro compilations. Ended up being an avid record collector and loved visiting record shops and spent ages rifling through the records looking for gems. I'm a huge fan of NWA and the Easy-E solo stuff, along with most of the others you mentioned. First gig I ever went to was to see Public Enemy/Run DMC in Newport in the late 80's, and have been lucky enough to see Ice-T, De La Soul and Gang Starr since then. Was also into a lot of UK stuff at the time - Demon Boyz, Hijack, Overlord X, Ruthless Rap Assasins, Cash Crew etc.. I've tried listening to the current Hip Hop acts, but it's just not the same anymore. You can't beat the classics. " Yes it was the film Breakdance that got me into it. Loved Kelly, Ozone and Turbo. Evenings and weekends were spent down on the park watching the local lads doing the moves.

"I like fun 80s hip hop. Things got a bit nasty in the 90s (though I do have a soft spot for Miami Bass. Despite it's misogynistic lyrics)" Im glad someone mentioned Miami bass, when i got into car audio in the mid 90's lots of people were playing that stuff. Many a subwoofer was killed pumping those b-lines out.
