Im so fucking glad that the internet wasn’t around when I was a kid, just spending your days out on your bike, no mobile phones, just calling on your mates and spending the whole day just messing about.

Not concerning yourself with getting likes and hits, had none of this bullshit, social media, fake news, arguing with strangers online. I feel sorry for kids now, that they didn’t have that freedom.

It fucks up your attention span, I’m sure it’s going to effect this generation down the line.

I’m not saying technology isn’t a good thing, but I think it’s healthy just to be out smelling the flowers and just being a kid.

Do you feel the same, or would you have liked today’s technology around when you were a kid ?

We have beem telling our 14 year old daughter this for ages...go out and do stuff! She nearly had a meltdown a while back..the broadband/wifi went down for a day and she was meant to be meeting some friends in town. Didnt have any of there numbers they only contact each other on snapchat!

These sort of things make me laugh. When i was a kid i remember the grown ups saying that same kind of thing about us. How better their childhooda were etc..

In 20 years the kids of today will say the same to their offspring.

I think all generations have their good and bad points.

Abuse was swept under the carpet when i was a kid. Kids with special needs were segregated really and not in mainstream schools.

If you werent popular then you could become isolated

Bullying was ignored

So on and so forth

It’s brilliant to be able to access the information on the internet and being able to buy stuff from all over the world is fantastic. I remember phoning up a bookshop in America in the early 1990s to order a book and it was like I’d phoned from Mars.

The downside is the social media side, that puts huge strain on people to appear they’re having a good time with the inevitable emotional problems because nobody is having as good a time as a Facebook profile suggests.

I’m also very glad that not everyone was carrying a camera which could publish pictures or video to the entire world when I was younger. That must be awful for kids today

I loved being outdoors climbing trees, riding my bike and heading off on “Stand By Me”-esque adventures with my friends in the wild. I also loved my Speak and Spell.

I have some younger friends, the amount of eye rolling I get when I wank off about growing up in the 80's/90's is a joy to behold. I talk about a more innocent time where if friends didn't meet at the pre arranged time discussed on the landline we'd never see each other again all day, being left on your own all summer holidays, getting in late at 11pm with a scowl from your mum rather than a search party out for you. The sound of dial up and not knowing if the person you were chatting to was lying about their a/s/l. Simpler times.

I think we’re losing the art of being in the moment, just appreciating something for what it is, instead of thinking I’ll post this on Facebook. It’s not enough to just do something, you have to show people you were there doing it.

I loved my childhood and all the freedom I and my peers were given..we used to ride for miles across the countryside. I think its sad now that I have to lecture my 13 yr old about steering clear of weird looking men in the park but luckily he is more interested in sitting in his room and playing fortnight rather than playing outside and actually interacting with other kids..so maybe its not such a bad thing after all

You missed the point, I’m not saying it’s better, I’m saying it’s healthier for kids to be kids and not worrying about fads and trends on the internet.

Also nothing has come close to influencing our lives more than the internet and modern technology.

This is not a ‘it was better in my day’ rant. I just think it was healthy that we knew what the world was like before social media etc

This is why we’ve ended up with ‘safe spaces’ at university and people disciding they want to be called ‘they’ instead of he or she, cause we’ve pandered to this bullshit and hysteria caused by online pressure.

For a lot of kids their entire life is contained within the confines of 10 square inches.

It’s how they communicate with friends, it’s how they communicate with strangers. It’s how they watch TV and films. It’s how they play games. It’s how they shop, get creative, do their homework. Etc, etc.

Ironically my phone went kaput a couple of weeks ago and I bizarrely felt a bit helpless for a couple of hours and then I really enjoyed it.

I think the internet is quite possibly the most incredible invention of all time but I agree with OP - a summer like this when I was a boy would have meant a lot of sport, exploration and adventure.

Are we sounding old yet?

When I was a kid my group was led by teenagers who looked after us, when we went to the country park, London for the day, over the lido and to the paddling pool park.

Our parents didn't have to go everywhere with is because we had big kids looking after us.

The big kids are too busy stabbing each other to bother with the little kids; or they send them out doing their errands for them.

I think there is a problem that starts with adults. Very young children, babies and toddlers, are handed phones and tablets to keep them quiet. They see us glued to our devices and naturally copy that. It is how they learn.

Then we blame the internet and the devices for them not having the childhoods we had.

My childhood was spent locked away. We weren't allowed out to play often. We were locked in, on our own, during the school holidays. I was five and looking after my 3 year old sister. A way of connecting with the world might have been good.

Do you remember when we want our friends to admire a photo of our dinner we had to dig out the camera, take a snap, wind on the film to take another from a different angle, then use up the roll by taking snaps of the dog. Pop down Boots (other chemists available) fill out the form, pay your money then wait a couple of days, I was cheap I never paid for express processing, then take the pics round to all your friends so they could give it the thumbs up.

I did all that stuff as a kid (no internet for us until I was 15), but I also played on our Amstrad for hours (got it when I was 4) and my Gameboy was rationed to half an hour a day (like I didn’t sneak some extra time!). Or the ‘getting home and going on the phone to the friends I’d spent all day at school with’ for hours at a time. TV was pretty restricted in my house but plenty of friends watched that for hours when they got home.

Did I enjoy going out on my bike and knocking on friends’ doors to see if they were in and wanted to come out and play? Sure! But I’m not going to pretend that we didn’t waste time indoors talking to each other and watching screens as well.

Social media, I worry about, with the unrealistic expectations that it engenders, but I think that they will cope with it in the long run. We’re a resilient species.

I'm sure it affects those kids who's parents don't care what they're up to. My kids spent today out on their bikes and at the park with a football. Yes there was an element of Xbox and mobile phones involved at some point but it certainly isn't taking over their lives because we set groundrules. We've also been out for a family walk this evening, and we often go out cycling together. I never had that with my parents. So it doesn't have to be all bad and it certainly isn't for all children.

It doesn't really matter where you meet them really. Online where you're more than likely sober, can see their interests and can chat a little is better than in a pub where both are hammered. I know you can meet them anywhere not only pubs but to me it doesn't really matter.

When I was a kid I was either playing on my Sega Master System/Mega Drive or out on my bike or roaming around the woods building camps and stuff.

If I'd had access to unlimited free porn as a teenager like the youth of today do I don't think I'd have left my room much. I'd have been like Quagmire in that episode of Family Guy.

I was born in 1964 and I have to say I feel that I had a great childhood and adolescence. I think the best thing about it - which those born this century tend not to benefit from (or appreciate) - was the general lack of immediacy. You were never as rushed - even as an adult - back then, as you are now. That said; on demand telly is the dog's bollocks.

My childhood was great. Always about playing. Every person down the road knew who you were. If you were up to no good your parents knew about it before you got home . I still live in the same road and I don't know half the people living there now. I think life in general has changed. Everyone is head down rushing about trying to earn every penny there is to pay of the mortgage or pay off the car. Kids are given the iPad to keep them occupied. As for social media. I use FB but very rarely post personal stuff. 98% of it is just jokes and stupid shit. The biggest difference I notice in myself since the leap in technology is not remembering phone numbers. As a kid I could call anyone without looking up their number. Now they are all stored in the mobile the biggest challenge is remembering what name I've stored them under

I agree loved growing up before the internet.... however...

Imagine no internet now. Are we still leaving our front doors open... i was out late over the park and climbing tress and stuff in woods and over wimbledon comman till all hours of the night. If i had a 10 year old i wouldnt be letting them out that late unsupervised. So.. yes the internet is keeping our kids indoors but then society and (in my case my personel) over protection is also keeping them in.

All said and done if my daughter was to never watch poxy youtube again it would make me extremely happy

Yeah I'm glad i experienced the transition too. At age 11, nobody had a mobile phone and by 16, everyone did. It'll be hard for people younger to understand certain reasons why things are the way they are. For example, younger people will wonder why older people think a sign of intelligence is the ability to recall facts without the use of Google, a near-useless skill today. My kids will be going out on their bikes again today... just like I used to. The great difference is that I know they are safe while they're out as they keep in touch with their mobiles.

Totally ... kids will never experience having that kind of freedom...

Things that should be left alone till a later age ,their innocence is lost alot quicker now.

But at the same time technology does connect the world.being able to stay in touch with friends from around the world...

I’m not saying technology isn’t a good thing, but I think it’s healthy just to be out smelling the flowers and just being a kid.

Believe it or not but we 100% agree! Today’s technology does have huge advantages we can’t deny, but it has made the youth of today lazy and not appreciate nature in the way we did when we were young and long before the internet took over the world!

Most of my childhood was spent in the park across the road where I live lots of small sided football matches there was also a swings , slide and roundabout section that you could play in as well as tennis courts and a nine hole pitch and putt you could ride your bike roller skate and skateboard.Happy days for me each generation will have different things to remember their childhood as long as it’s a happy one is what’ important.

I had a mega drive growing up. Before that a Spectrum 48K (Manic Miner or Jet Set Willy anyone?) We’ve always had tech in the house but it was managed.

I loved going places. The outdoors is what brings us closer to nature and ultimately to ourselves. A feeling of appreciation.

Seeing this new generation coming through it’s not their fault. It’s how they’re being managed growing up.

I loved my childhood, it’s part of my make up and I wouldn’t change it. However, would it have been even better if I’d had what my kids have now, possibly.

If you’re a family of interaction and get up and go you’ll still be doing this regardless of modern day distractions.
