How narrow minded are you?

Do you ever try and see things from other people's point of view, or can you only see your own side?

If you're having a discussion are you narrow minded and can't imagine anything other than your own opinion exists? Do you ever change your mind after a discussion?

By definition narrow minded people don’t know they’re narrow minded, more intelligent people have more empathy and are more willing to take other peoples opinion on board.

I like hearing different opinions and often ask for them but they need to be based on fact before I can consider them.

I do depending on how the facts have been presented to me.

If someone, or a group of people, makes it sound like I am stupid, which btw is true but do not need a reminder, their arrogance fuck up their point.

You can be intelligent and still get your point across without belittling and condescending people in the process.

It seems that some 'intelligent' people miss that point on here

I love hearing other people's opninions. I'm always open to having my opinion changed if the premise on which its based is sound. However, not all opinions have to be based on fact to have value. Some are based on morality, personal experience etc.

I can see both sides for most things... I may not change my personal opinion but can see why someone may think or act like that.

I find it frustrating at times as feel my understanding nature can be taken advantage of or misread as easy to trick. I'm not. I just can view things from someone else's shoes. But It rarely changes my personal view point.

Snap.

The only way we can learn other views and opinions, ways other than our own is to listen and educate ourselves. It's those that listen to respond rather than listen to hear that I think are blinkered.

Good answer, but it's amazing how different reactions can be dependant on a subject discussed...as we see in the forums?

Yes, it's not always trying to convert others to your way of thinking, but to accept we all think differently and that's ok.

I think I'm fairly open minded.

Always willing to listen to others opinions and have been known to change my mind after listening.

However I do have something's I will not be swayed on, so does that make me average minded?

Nothing worse than someone who is very opinionated.. that’s a sure way to get yourself into a rant.

I like to think I’m on the fence with most things, seems to be the easiest way round it.

If you hold good characteristics then you can't be narrow minded..

empathy sympathy kind honest respectful and so on..

but when we let our personal experiences and views cloud our views opinions and come across as though nothing else is right then yes defo narrow minded

How can I make a genuine statement saying I'm open minded? It would need the eyes of others to qualify that remark?

We may think we are, but maybe our close mindedness prevents us from realising it?

that's way too deep...that's what reading forums whilst out walking in the woods does to you!

I'm proper brain dead today. That sounds really deep. Or something that would only make sense when I'm pissed.

One group of people may think you're open minded but another may think you're closed minded, even on the same subject.

I'm more open minded with some people than others. It depends on their attitude to me. If someone uses their intelligence as a weapon to patronise and belittle I stop listening.

There are also some subjects on which my mind will never be changed.

I am en extremely open minded but as for listening to other people's opinions, well It depends on the situation. If it's in a heated argument I can be so stubborn and I will cut my nose to spite my face rather than let the other person know that now I've listened to their point of view, and I actually agree with them.

At other times I'm more than willing to say yes, you're actually right

Depends.

If it’s something I’m passionate about and / or am 100% correct I will stand my ground.

That’s not to say I won’t consider the differing opinion I just won’t open my mind upto it.

I’ve changed my mind a few times in the past on the forums. A well presented factual discussion can do that

Interesting question. It brought to mind this quotation; which applies just as much now, in the UK, as it has in the USA. Sadly.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

You can indeed , but some people don’t get that at all . As soon as someone does it I simply turn off and don’t listen , don’t have any further interaction with them , and no matter what they say I won’t have anything to do with them .

So I’m totally closed minded to that type of person .

But very open minded to reason minded and open people who put points across in a reasonable way .

My view on most things is my opinion isn’t the only opinion or the right opinion but the best one for me at that time. The opinions of others presented in an appropriate manner can change mine. I see that as personal development. However, as F&B said above the intelligent, belittling, condescending my opinion is the only opinion and therefore correct approach is more likely to make me think they’re a knob and their opinion right, wrong or indifferent I won’t even entertain. Aesop’s fable the North wind and the Sun is something some may want to take on board when trying to change the opinion of others

I'd describe myself as radically open minded in the sense that I've exerted serious time and effort into falsifying and questioning things I believe in. As a result, conversations on here often change my mind and give me insight into things.

If you stuck me in a room with a version of me in my early 20s, me in my late 20s, and me in my early 30s we'd have a massive argument with each other on all sorts of issues. I like that side of me. It makes me a more interesting, complex, intellectually adventurous, and empathetic person
