I Didn't realise sex offenders can apply to have their names removed from the sex offenders register ...the report I heard offenders even with crimes against children are and have been successful in their appeal..

Didn't read it...it was on my local evening news (calendar) I kissed part of the story ..I think the numbers were 140 were successful in south Yorkshire police area... a lot of forces haven't said how many

It is possible. But not easy. Only those that are on the register for life can apply. They have to have done courses, show genuine remorse for their crimes, victim empathy etc.

There is a huge amount to it.

It used to be that you could be on for life. That was deemed to be a breach of human rights. So, now, those who are on ‘indefinitely’ get reviewed every fifteen years. They can make a case for why they think they should come off. They can come off without having to make a case, if the Police don’t think they need to be on any more.

That’s just the indefinite ones. Others are on for 5, 7, or ten years depending on the length of their custodial sentence.

If it’s a community based sentence, they’re only on for the length of the supervision order. Often that’s 1-3 years. If the social work decide they can come off early because they’ve done the required work, they’ll come off the register early, too.
