"Loads of rope work and shibari lessons on you. Tube. My personal favourites are The Knotty Boys series; mix of restraints and decorative"

Whooh - never try rope by copying utube except for easy stuff like hand ties and breast restraint - more advanced stuff needs serious study - and if you value your partners skin then use silk rope only.

They do shibari (rope jam) classes in a studio in Peckham London. I think they are famous for it.

I got their books too and go to local rope workshops but you. Tube is a great place to see which ones you like ams can further research even if you don't use the clips to learn. I always try new ties on myself first before going near anyone else anyways

Yes Anatomie I’m a regular there, it’s a great place. In terms of the OPs location though I don’t think there’s a huge amount unless they want to travel. I know rope on and glasgow does are both north of you, or rope office hours in Leeds. I’m starting a new monthly rope jam in Hull in September. Otherwise esinem provide online classes or as others said start with YouTube videos. Feel free to drop me a message or see some of my rope pics on NotForSofties profile

Yes it’s awesome. They’ve recently moved into a bugger studio too. Really great workshops and people. Definitely recommended if you’re in the area or willing to travel like I do

You can go along by yourself and find someone there to tie with or find a partner in advance. Do you want to tie or be tied?

If you decide to tie with someone you don’t know it’s always good to get a reference first. If you’d be interested in me tying you feel free to get feedback from sexybrunette and no worries if not x

I am no expert but I love rope, I have been teaching myself how to whip and splice the ends of my rope that is how sad I am.

This is my take on learning rope having gone the roundabout route.

First safety, your bottom or bunny partner is precious. Before tying, learn where not to put rope I wince at some of the pictures I see on Fab. Keep safety shears or an implement to cut rope that will not hurt your partner close.

Also learn a single column that will not cinch or collapse. There are videos on knots and safety on YouTube (Esinem) and all good rope books have section on safety.

Although there is advice on here to use YouTube for simple knots, the single column is the basic starting point of most Japanese rope it is best, in my view, to be taught it in person.

Where to learn? Peer Rope is a good start and they are now popping up all around the country. There is Hitchin Bitches in London which is woman lead.

The place in Peckham is good and unlike peer rope is available every week.

My own view is YouTube videos are worthwhile once you have the basics down. The videos don't always explain why a knot or a tie is constructed in a specific way.

I am also a believer in one to one tuition which is available, pricey, but worth while. There are also workshops available.

If you want to go down the book route and if you want to do decorative rope then the knotty boys is ok. Personally I lost 6 months of my life trying to understand them. I hate them!

If you want western bondage, shiny chunky rope with showy knots with no function then I would recommend the Knotty Boys.

If you want connection with your partner keep away from them.

I believe rope is for function and communication but hey I have Zen in my profile name.

If you want to tie your partner for sex, I would recommend Chantra Rose's Bondage for Sex. If you want the basics of Japanese style try Douglas Kent 's Complete Shibari but it is getting pricey.

Also Miumi U Teaches Shibari is good as is also Lord Morpheus's Bondage Basics, which unlike the others has ties you can use for men. If you are gay or like tying men there is a book but the name escapes me at the moment. I will steal ties from anywhere.

I would also mention Peter Riggs Bondage the smart way and both of Lee Harringon's Shibari books.

The type of rope you use is personal choice. I use 6mm Jute in 8 metre lengths at home or at Peer Rope (in shibari you use the rope doubled over). I have short lengths for wrist and ankle cuffs and hair ties.

In clubs I use 6mm polyhemp as it is easy clean and sanitize. Cotton rope is good for sensual stuff but does not hold knots under tension well. But I have seen amazing scenes with cotton, and I like to throw it in the mix from time to time. If you are of a sadistic bent then coconut rope is your friend. A lot of people use hemp as well.

The main thing is not to be intimidated by Fab experts, there a lots of simple ways to get started. There are some blinding riggers on Fab and I suspect they would lead with safety first and getting the basics down pat.

All that being said and I love rope but I understand the allure of zip ties.
