Buggies should face the parents

I had an interesting discussion about it, that many buggies is facing the opposite way, whilst it is important that they face the parents so they keep that bond going, whats your view, what side should it be?

Teeny brand new baby prams usually do face the parent dont they? I thought it was only as they became more independent ie able to sit unaided etc you get the buggies that forward face and as your wonderful little tot grows and learns to kick with their gangly legs its a blessing surely. Not only that they become more inquisitive and looking at just mum must get boring, facing away they can see the road ahead, people, cars, trees, flowers enough to keep a creative mind busy usually.

All 4 of mine had big bulky parent facing prams for around 9 months, at that point they were getting to be lumps, and a lightweight stroller sufficed.

Ours goes both ways, Moses baskets, where the child lays flat have the opening to the parents, we have a car seat which attaches to the pram which faces the parents, then we have pushchair style seat which can go either way, these are all on the same set of wheels. I prefer it towards me, my wife prefers it facing outward.

Once the child is able to walk, and climb in and out of the pushchair it needs to be outward facing because that's where the step is, and so they don't bang their head on the handle.

Face parents for about the first 6 months then changed to face forward so they can take in the world - can still interact and point out things to child

Doesn’t make any difference these days as whenever I see a pram or buggy, the person pushing is on their mobile phone and not paying any attention to the nipper

As parents you soon learn that whatever you do will be wrong in somebody's opinion.

The best midwife/healthvisitor we ever had walked in to the chaos that was our home after our second child was born and said "amazing mother". The place looked like a bomb had hit it, our two year old wasn't dressed neither was l. The two year old was on the sofa clutching the five day old baby and I was sitting on the floor . She recognised that most people do their best whether their buggies face forward, sideways or upside down.

My Own Little World

When my kids were little their buggy seats were reversible. So I had them facing me when they were tiny so I could see them, make sure they hadn't been sick etc. Once they were about 6 months I turned the seat around so they could face forwards. They didn't seem to complain.

It’s quite right that they face away from the parent once they reach a certain age. Simplest reason behind the design is that the child then needs to learn to interact and be part of the world, to see other people and new things. If a child was say 9months old and you’re out and about but they’re facing you they would likely drive you crazy as there’s nothing to grab their attention. It’s a crucial stage of development and being able to see the world and interact with it is part of their development. Even when other kids or adults wave at them or interact in some way is essential to the child. Facing the parent all the time would hinder them developing social skills.

Good ones everyone, so at a certain age when they can walk, it is good to be facing the front, so they can go from it.
