"If it's just a power problem they wouldn't need logon to it. Just don't give them the password." Not difficult to look at the data that’s on it though. You don’t necessarily need the password to get at the files unless it’s encrypted.

" Take the hard drive out. Easy to do. If it's simply a power fault or battery that can be fixed without it. I always store pics on an external drive to avoid losing items and for privacy." Not everyone knows how to take a hard drive out, plus not all laptops have a hard drive.

"Dead battery or not, it should still turn on while plugged in." Mine didn't, but then it was an HP one and it was rubbish

"Dead battery or not, it should still turn on while plugged in. Mine didn't, but then it was an HP one and it was rubbish" I have had a hp for years, only issue they seem to have in my experience is the thermal paste on the cpu often cracks and then the fans work overtime and prevent the system booting.

"When you try to switch it on, does it do anything? Lights, beeps, fans running, any sort of noises? Sometimes if the battery is knackered, that can stop your laptop from booting. My first job would be to try removing the battery and plugging it in... see if it switches on. Cal" It doesn't have a fan on it. It's one of the ones that doesn't have a hard drive as such. It's a hp Was working perfect. Didn't drop it and I am the only one that uses it.

It will have a battery and probably a removable storage drive of some description but they'll be secured inside. So without taking it apart, there's little you could do. Cal

"Personally the first thing I’d do is unplug it and remove the battery then hold the on button for 10 seconds to discharge any remaining power then unscrew the case and have a look at the capacitors on the board. You’ll know if any of those have blown as they all have a distinctive X on the top ( literally little batteries) and if they are bulged they’ve blown. Those are often the cause of problems with electrical products as manufacturers frequently put lower voltage capacitors in their products so they barely last over 12 months. If they are blown you simply buy uprated ones and replace them (you’ll need a soldering iron) but the capacitors themselves are only a couple of quid." If you do decide to do this, please be really fucking careful to discharge before you start playing around. Capacitors can give you a really nasty belt

"Hit it. With a hammer. P.s. I'm more of a mechanic than an electrician " Don’t forget to spray it liberally with WD40 first before you hit it

Yeah big time, it overheated in the end" The paste is not expensive at all. And it probably takes 15-20 minutes and if you do that every six months or so you’ll never have any issues. There’s not really many components that cost more than a couple of quid. It’s just about having the knowledge, hence why I stick with hp, know them well enough to fix them. Made a decent bit of money buying ‘broken’ ones over the years, same thing with Samsung flat screens, they’re often a half hour job costing me about £4 and people just throw them away when they don’t turn on. It’s crazy to me how quick people are to discard electronic devices that cost hundreds of pounds. I’m too tight for that

"So recently my laptop decided to just give up. It was working perfectly fine and now it just wont power on at all. When I plug it in to charge the light comes on so it looks like it's charging. I was going to leave it into a shop to be fixed but my husband is insisting that a friend of ours fixes it. He has fixed all our stuff before. My problem is it has many pictures stored on it. Private ones that i wouldn't want to share. I'm not saying he would look through them but you never know. Also fab would have been the last thing I looked up on the internet browser. Is their anything I can try and do to get it back working" Order a new battery for it. It sounds like a battery fault but even if it isn’t the new battery will arrive charged which will allow you to turn it on and delete your history and protect your photos and stuff.

"My laptop just needed the button you press to turn it on repaired. He thinks it's broken and should have it fixed early afternoon. Prying he doesn't snoop around on it. " Do you think he'll say anything to your hubby if he accidentally sees something he shouldn't?

He became friends with my husband in collage and that's how I met my hubby. I am hoping his loyalty lies with me
