"Elon Musk has called a British diver who helped rescue schoolboys from a flooded cave in Thailand ‘pedo guy’ on Twitter.

The entrepreneur’s outburst came after diver Vern Unsworth told Mr Musk to “stick his submarine where it hurts” after describing his offer to help with a miniature submersible as a “PR stunt”."

The diver is thinking of taking legal action against Mr Musk. What do you think he should do?

I'd take him for every penny he's worth!!!

There are many names you can call people but that is bang out of order.

How many followers does musk have on twitter? I'm guessing thousands. People get attacked and even killed because of false allegations of being a paedophile, I'd sue the fuck out of him personally

Absolutely, take legal action for deformation of character. It's too higher profile accusation to ignore and the sort of false accusation that can really damage someone's life.

I'm disappointed with Musk, as it's a despicable thing to do - people have been killed after similar untruths became public.

I think less positively towards him now.

I'd not try legal action against such a rich man, unless it was funded by a similar person.

It would be ideal to forgive and let go of it but a tough one - especially if it harms his life.

It would likely need to be in the US courts, which Musk will be more familiar with than this guy.

I'd definitely be instructing lawyers, absolutely baffled why Musk would make such a comment. He's clearly throwing his toys out the pram because he didn't become the hero but this is both spiteful and vicious

Isn’t he just - a very childish self entitled one at that!! I hope the diver gets some payout but sadly rich people get to play dirty and win!!!

Apparently his business shares have taken a dive. The diver started the childishness by all accounts but I agree it could be dangerous for him and he should sue.

I think he would be hard pressed to win the the american courts as he wasnt named. Its much harder to get a liable case over there. Would probably be better persuded in different courts.

The reports seem to suggest that Musk was pushing for his sub to be used, even though he was told repeatedly by various expert divers on site that it wouldn't get through even the first sump (flooded section), Musk's guys were getting in the way and the guy he insulted had asked them to leave a few times, before he issued the idea as to what Musk could do with the sub.

I used to be a big Musk fan, but one or two other reports seem to paint him as someone who has lost a little touch with reality.

Probably but i doubt he's as rich as you think. Tesla has never made a profit. He's no Bill Gates.

Ah that would explain the diver's comment then. I'd be irate too if I was trying to rescue someone and a team were getting in the way.

Bill Gates is worth $93bn. But the other difference is that Musk can't take dividends from his company because it doesn't make profit. Whilst Microsoft has long been one of the most profitable companies in the world.

I don't think that would be hard. However, lawyers aren't too bothered about who the represent or claim against. There will be plenty willing to chase the money.

Chances are he won't win anything from the case and it'll be a huge waste of money on his part. Due to the US laws on freedom of speech you can say just about anything without much blowback apart from by the press. I agree that calling the bloke a pedo is wrong but I can see why musk was frustrated as he is genuinely in it to help people - just look at all the good he has done so far, I think people just like to attack people more well off than them because it makes them feel better about their situation.

I think if the apology was as public as the original slur and it's enough to make sure that everyone knows the diver isn't a paedophile and, it was just Elon being silly... I'd take the apology. Life's to short and the secret to a long one, sometimes, is knowing when to quit!

He's apologised.

"‘My words were spoken in anger after Mr Unsworth said several untruths & suggested I engage in a sexual act with the mini-sub, which had been built as an act of kindness & according to specifications from the dive team leader,’ he said.

‘Nonetheless, his actions against me do not justify my actions against him, and for that I apologize to Mr Unsworth and to the companies I represent as leader.

‘The fault is mine and mine alone. ‘I am truly sorry if I offended anyone.’"

It won't go as viral as the row did but he's gone back up in my estimation for apologising.

It's like when news papers apologise. Huge front page slur...itty bitty apology hidden somewhere near the back. There should be a law forcing news papers to make the apology in the same place as the original slur.

You have to hand it to the diver, he's only asking 57 grand in damages, I'd have gone for at least another zero on the end!

A world all of his own

I was reading a little about this on the BBC website yesterday afternoon.

Owing to the way the first amendment of the constitution works (the right to free speech) and defamation of character law suits, the onus is on the defendant to prove that they suffered hardship as a result of the comments. Very bizarre

He's achieved a lot, you're rarely going to find a mild mannered, well balanced person in that position. Extreme results, extreme people.
