Social media platforms enhanced communication between folk or created a problem for folk in communicating face to face?

Yes!!!!

It also gives out false indications of real life.

I've seen groups of youngsters out and they spot someone they like but instead of approaching and talking they have to check social media/dating apps to see if they're on there and send a message first!!!

"Social media platforms enhanced communication between folk or created a problem for folk in communicating face to face?"

Only for kids who spend a lot of time on their phones..

My son would rather sit in his bedroom communicating with his friends via social media than be out playing with them..

It drives me up the wall

I'm pretty certain it's affecting kids (mine included I've two late teenagers ) I've seen a couple of threads recently where folk who are of an age I'd think would be old enough to ask a person of the opposite sex out.. yet they seem to for want of a better word lack the social skills or confidence in their social skills to pop the question... is it affecting us all ?

I don't think lack of confidence in asking someone out is anything to do with social media issues. It's always been an issue for some people. It's the fear of rejection that's all.

Peer pressure. Kids want to check who is talking to who at times. For my daughter it’s been beneficial as it helps her keep in contact with her friends as she only sees them at weekends.

It does have benefits.

Depends how you use it. I use the book of faces to promote my business, and to keep in contact with people who are too far away for me to see face to face. Family, friends, and so on. Some people do use it wrong, and have gotten stuck in the social media world and let their lives revolve around it. Social media can be toxic if used incorrectly

It's shocking how ignorant people have become when in company.

I sat in a pub with a lady enjoying some food and actual conversation. The amount of what I like to call 'chimps' (the pose that nearly all phone obsessed people adopt), was astonishing.

We then went to the theatre to support a friend, and again, the amount of people ignoring what was going on onstage to adopt the chimp pose was laughable.

The list is endless.

Go to a concert and see how many people watch it via their phone screens as they record it instead of actually watching it with their eyes.

I don't believe it's to blame for any degeneration in social skills. I don't think there is a degeneration in social skills, manners perhaps. Every generation thinks the next one is worse than them, it's just human psychology. I think people see what they want to.

Social media addiction is a very real problem and prevelant. But that's not the same as not having social skills.

You're referring to my threads. It's nothing to do with social media or lacking social skills for me. I wouldn't want to ask him or communicate with him via social media instead of interacting with him in person. But I don't want to open myself up and put myself in a situation where I could be rejected because having to see him at work after that would be embarrassing. All I'm doing or trying to do is give as much information as to our interaction, to try and see before actually asking him out, if it would be welcomed and reciprocated.

It's nothing to do with social media or not having social skills.

I know I could just go up to him and ask him out, I'd know what to say, I just don't want him to say no to me.

If he's been on here he will have tried many ways of phrasing his first messages and probably got ignored 99.99% of the time. I think it skews the way people think - he'll be wondering what on earth he needs to do for a response.

Also there's a lot going on about sexual harassment. I think a lot of people don't know what's ok anymore. Even smiling at someone can get an irate reaction sometimes.

I think there is probably good and bad in social media. On the one hand it probably can become quite addictive - The Joy of Ping and the wee bit of dopamine from a something happening. And it probably can skew people’s view of what life should be like as most probably post the good stuff, and very possibly embellish a little.

Flip side though is probably that it does help kids who maybe are less good in real life social situations, or have less popular interests, reach out and make connections with others on a similar situation, and they are probably beneficial if the alternative is feeling alone, disconnected and unpopular.

Yep.. Yours was one of the threads I was referring to.. the other was a guy this morning.. some of the other guys were taking the piss and you said so..I think the guy hads watched too much porn .it seemed strange to me anyway that a guy of 30ish wanted advice how to ask a lady out-and one of his comments was should I email

I understand where you're coming from .. I do..I doubt there's anyone that hasn't felt the bubble burst and I'm not having a dig.. no matter how much info you give ..I'm afraid there's no certainty..

I Hope you both get the responses you're after

"Social media platforms enhanced communication between folk..."

Not if your title and OP, and a few of the replies, are anything to go by.

"...or created a problem for folk in communicating face to face?"

It varies from person to person.

Would it seem strange to you if he wondered about writing a note or letter?

You’re right. There are no nasty bullies offline.

As the guy had chatted to this lady face to face previously and from memory worked with her...yep that'd be strange to me as well

So, you’re entirely unfamiliar with how people have protected themselves since long before social media existed.
