I really love Dr Phil.

He's not a bully like Jeremy Kyle, his show has a serious point unlike Jerry Springer and he's actually intelligent unlike.... any other talk show host.

It's hard to pick a favourite guest, but my top 3 would be;

3. The 48 year old guy who dresses up like a dog and goes around... being a dog

2. Sexy vegan

1. The 'catch me outside' girl

Who else has a favourite guest?

I was a total Dr Phil addict when I lived out in the US. Still would be if I could find a way to watch episodes. I do think, however, that unlike Gordon Ramsay who appears to be a cunt but I suspect is a bloody nice bloke, Dr Phil seems really nice but I suspect he's a cunt. But that doesn't make the viewing any less addictive

He calls people out on their bullshit. Like some stupid alcoholic mother who was neglecting her kids and she said "all they need is my love". He called her out on it and said "no, they need you to make good decisions and provide for them". You can get a lot on YouTube.

I think it was number 3 or 4, it’s only a small part in the opening scene in a Saw parody with Shaq

There's a strong right wing conservative christian bullshit theme running through most of his advice. His one saving grace is that unlike alot of other shows that get people on, make a freak show out of them, then kick them out, he tries to take them seriously, doesn't mock them, tries to give them his honest advice (even if it is tainted by the above), and they get genuine help afterwards

Only a very few complete episodes on YouTube when I last looked. Might see if more have been uploaded

And by "strong right wing conservative christian bullshit" you mean telling people to take personal responsibility and fix their problems rather than giving them a shoulder to cry on because that's 'empathy'.

Somewhere In The Ether…

I’ve not seen him I’m afraid but on the subject of talk show hosts, I did used to quite like Montel Williams.

Unlike many of these types of shows which often showcase noisy rabbles and lots of ‘Whooping’ and screaming, he used to keep his audience calm.

Mind you, the fact he was ex military probably helped to

I don't know how much Dr Phil you've seen but there have been times when some suburban christian family have brought in a loved one they're worried about because they're having too much sex, partying too much, maybe smoking stuff. After a while you start figuring out there's a "normal" that Dr Phil is comparing people to (the fatal flaw of all psychoanalysis imo) and that this norm is essentially the suburban right wing conservative christian family with 1 house, 2 cars, 2.5 children, the dad at work and the mom at home. It's just a bit too saccharine and stepford wifey for me

You only reach this realisation after watching A LOT of Dr Phil

I disagree. If a teenager is smoking that stuff then he explains scientifically proven consequences to their behaviour.

You might says there's no normal. But there are good and bad strategies in life. So i wouldn't expect anyone qualified to help improve peoples lives, to be out there telling everyone that all life choices are equal.

I can see why it probably helps most people. But I'm a black swan kinda guy, as I'm sure you've already guessed.

I remember reading about some dude who was surfing and essentially bumming his life away, probably smoked a huge bit of the stuff. But in his spare time he was an avid reader of books on science. He ended up devising his own kooky philosophy on life. Then he thought he'd write it down and publish it. It turned out that it contained some great new scientific thinking in it that took scientists by surprise and promised new advances. I can't remember the details of this story and I don't know what ended up happening in the end. My only point is that he was precisely the kind of guy who Dr Phil would've "healed" and told to get a job and we may never have benefited from his insights.

Science is statistical. It'll tell you what most benefits most people. But you shouldn't live your life by that. Instead you should strive to be exceptional. The 1%. For that there's no advice. Both Einstein and Picasso got there and the one remained how the entire universe worked whilst the other splodged paints on a canvas. There is no known route to greatness. Strive for contented mediocrity if you must. But you're aiming too low imo

Well I actually agree with that, but what percentage of the 1% would end up as a guest on Dr Phil?
