Anyone that can remember the last world cup England won is near enough a pensioner now, if we get to the final it's not even a once in a generation event, it's a once in a lifetime event. And while I'm not overly interested, I know I'll be in the minority and would hope many retailers close early for the sake of their staff. Everyone can cope with the shops shutting slightly early on a Sunday

Yes Peachy!! Do you think your place will close early?

I’d love it to for the sake of the weekend staff (fortunately I’m not one of those) - but sadly I think it’s unlikely! They’re not renowned for doing anything other than the legal minimum for employees(wages, holiday entitlement etc). Hopefully they’ll surprise me though!

People can generally cope with a supermarket closing an hour early. Not so with hospitals, trains etc. It’s a nice gesture by the management, nobody will die because of it.

We closed our doors and put the shutters down when the match finished last Saturday, they were going nuts in the streets and tearing places up so we said stuff it and didn’t open till they calmed down and the police had settled the crowds, we will probably do the same for the rest of the matches till it’s over

I've shut for every game bar the Belgium one. I do something quite novel and tell them they hit there targets they can not only finish early but they'll also lose no wage. Absolute twat convincing directors this was a good idea but productivity is up 30% on last month so go figure.

I don't particularly like football and all the acrobatic nonsense displayed in this world cup proves why but I have to admit I think this decision from Aldi is great. Why shouldn't employers celebrate a bit of English success in England?

I can cope with losing an hour of shopping time on a Sunday. I'd quite like to see stories of nurses and patients able to watch some of the match in TV rooms. sport can be quite a leveller and let's people forget the shit that's going on in the world for just a few fleeting moments. Why would you not just enjoy that?

It won’t kill anyone if the shops close early on a Sunday for a change - and the few who don’t watch the match will get extra time with their loved ones! Win win!

Your attitude of 'suck it up' seems pretty divisive to me.

My immediate thought was the shops must be closing for fear of hooliganism, not letting staff of to watch the match. Such is the amount of thuggery I've seen.

I was talking to my boss today. We can only trade for 6 hours so we could just alter our opening times a bit if they refuse to close an hour early. That is the very least they could do really. Tight bastards!!!

Trying to avoid the sheer amount of sport in tv at the moment isn't easy. Unless you are paying for extra channels. Just imagine if football was suddenly replaced with dressage or croquet and half the country and the print, radio and tv stations never stopped prattling on about it. It's a sad day when we look at others achievements and piss on them.

Most businesses will save money closing early and through the fact their employees will think more of them if they do. What odds in the long run if some close for a few more hrs in the year? Reality is none. We can make it an issue or celebrate it.

Where do you get yours from begs the question?

Aldi is a private German family business. Which means they don’t publish aacounts, i.e. unaccountable.

Aldi Süd controls British shops to whom they are accountable for their profitability and management. Aldi hq is a few miles from us and if you hear what people at head office say about them it’s not good.

All profits go to Germany.

Just a cheap shot by them to close early.

And how come no British shops have followed suit?

Business is cut throat but some are easily beguiled by hollow gestures.
