Other than being a nasty, little, divided, spiteful country, run by a rich elite of mostly ex public schoolboys headed by an unelected monarchy who ensure that power and priviledge remain exactly where it should; with them.

Where the wealth gap grows ever greater, where people work two or three gig economy jobs just to survive and the elite just stash more in their off shore accounts.

Where large property investments in London remain empty whilst people sleep on the streets or burn to death in social housing high rise blocks.

Where debt is encouraged as a form of social control and where we now exist in a dystopian world of fake news and control - running faster and faster on our hamster wheels to fund the elites.

That's what has become of the country where my parents generation saw off Hitler, build thousands of Council homes from the rubble and created the NHS from nothing.

I believe she is implying that if one really believed that Britain was so bad, one would relocate to another country that one preferred. The fact that one does not do this implies that one is not entirely sincere in ones criticisms and just likes to moan.

The fact is this .

We really have never had it so good , no matter what any doom mongers may say .

We are so lucky to have the freedom to choose what we say , and what we do with this wonderful life we are given .

Anyone who thinks otherwise should try somewhere else for a while , and then come back and tell us how it went .

"Other than being a nasty, little, divided, spiteful country, run by a rich elite of mostly ex public schoolboys headed by an unelected monarchy who ensure that power and priviledge remain exactly where it should; with them.

That's what has become of the country where my parents generation saw off Hitler, build thousands of Council homes from the rubble and created the NHS from nothing."

Another little bundle of joy that can only think of all the negatives!

A depressing read

Best you move then. We are still one of the best countries to live in in the World - you could try Saudi???

What are you talking about?

I believe she is implying that if one really believed that Britain was so bad, one would relocate to another country that one preferred. The fact that one does not do this implies that one is not entirely sincere in ones criticisms and just likes to moan.

Oh right. I read it and thought, how sad, not I hate England and I need to move. Bit of an over reaction on her part I think.

If I could move countries I think I'd go to Italy though. "

Off you pop then!

I like Britain, to me it's home and if you take the time to explore it there are some beautiful places, especially at this time of year when everything is in bloom. I don't tend to let myself get bogged down in domestic politics and social issues any more, life's too short.

I love being British and feel blessed to have been born here.

I've travelled to many countries and have seen good points about all of them - but England will always be my home.

My dad came from the Caribbean in the 60's for good reason!

If people don't like it then no one is forcing them to stay!

It makes me cross when people complain about my home!

It's what you make of it and some people really need to see how shit other people's life's are in god forsaken parts of the world.

I'm a glass half full kind of guy and no amount of moaning is going to turn me into a hater as it eats you up inside.

Off out into the fresh air for a riverside walk to a pub with my dog where a cold stowfords has my name on it.

Enjoy your moaning about gb people

Regardless of the country or even town that people live in some will love It, some will hate, some won't have given it a second thought....the facts will be the same but people's personal perception and viewpoint will differ based on their mentality. Where you live and what it's like will be of your own making.

"You got to love Britain in 2018.Any criticism of the country and the real patriots tell you to get the fuck out the country .

You got to love the plastic patriots...

Strawman I know you think you're saying something of relevance but you're not..

Only totalitarian regimes and dictatorships define criticism as unpatriotic.

It's not "any criticism" I object to, it's nonsense criticism that I object to. Stuff that is factually incorrect. Hence why your point is a strawman because you are not addressing the point that was made. I suppose in the post truth age you are correct.Critics should be told to leave.

Or they could just say things that are true or at least evidence based and then we could discuss them. "

Come back with those goal posts sunshine!

I see plenty of people in this thread getting told to fuck off out of Britain because they are critical of this society .Its irrelevant that you agree of disagree with the criticism. What is important is critics are being told to get out of the UK because they see flaws in the society we live in and voice an opinion.

I would suggest that those telling others to "get out if you don't like it here",

should fuck off to North Korea or Russia were such views are welcome.

What do you think intolerance of other views means? I'm not telling anyone they can't have that opinion or trying to pass laws to stop people saying those opinions. But i don't have to lend them any credibility. If you're accusing me of not showing respect for other opinions then guilty as charged.

There are, without question, far worse places to live. That said, the UK has plenty of problems.

To paraphrase Al Murray: The UK isn't what it used to be. It's not united any more.

That's going to remain the case for decades.

Some good and bad points .

We are still British but now live in rural France.

being proud is one thing but on balance its about what is best for the individual.

If you are happy with crime figures ,NHS waiting times, lower wages .sitting in traffic all day .road rage ,political arguments, people moaning constantly and wanting to fight eachother over the smallest of reasons.Jeremy Kyle culture ,brainwashing tv etc.

We are happy spending our days away from all of that and even though we have to work . .irs not until you spend some time away from it all that you realise there are better things in life.

Yes, all that is happening here and, in many other places all over the world. Times have been worse though! We still have an NHS, we still have social housing, we still have one of the best democratic systems for politics. Most of the poor have a roof over their heads with television, somewhere to cook with hot and cold running water and toilets. It's not perfect and there is certainly room for improvement.

This is not necessarily the situation with the op but, I do tend to find that a lot of people with a negative outlook like the one above are, very good at pointing out all the faults but when challenged are doing between fuck all and very little to improve matters! They go to work and pay taxes and moan about what is wrong. A lot of people that moan don't exercise their right to vote at general or local elections. Are they getting involved in the neighborhood plan, are they getting involved in making sure planning and developers are following the rules about the percentage of social housing that must be included in any development over a certain size because, if you don't, they wriggle out of it? Are they campaigning to keep the local library open, whether they use it or not, for some, it's their only access to books and computers. Are they petitioning government and getting directly involved in putting pressure on them about the NHS or closing tax loopholes that only benefit the rich. Are they helping the homeless or helping the heroes? Do the step outside their front door with a smile and spread a bit of love (even to people that voted differently in the Brexit referendum or, people less fortunate) to try and help heal the divisions in our country? And, there is so much more as individuals or small groups that people can do to effect change. People are entitled to their opinions but don't just moan about how bad things are, try and do something about it or it will stay the same or get worse! Often, when I come across people that like to pick out all the negatives and, I ask them what they are doing about it or, contributing to make it better, the answer is fuck all.

I'm loving my country and a majority of the lovely people that inhabit it and, I shall keep pushing forward to make it a better place for future generations. On top of that...the weather is great and the national football team isn't doing badly!

Just because I think we’re incredibly lucky to live here, doesn’t mean I’m completely unaware of the negative parts. The politicians who don’t do their jobs correctly, the much-needed services facing difficulty because of the inefficiency of others or the Foodbank’s who are now seeing more and more people who need emergency food. However, as a big picture, I do still feel lucky.

Not to be pedantic, but we're seeing more and more supply of emergency food. The demand may well be static. There are absolutely no official statistics on foodbank usage or even a fixed definition of what one is. We only the records of the largest foodbank provider and people use that as a proxy for the whole country. It's supply grew for 10 consecutive years under Labour, albeit from a small supply. So we don't really know what the demand is, we just know the supply.

Plus I’m a great believer in life is what you make it. There are definite sectors in society that think the opposite and simply wait for life to unfold and fall in their lap. When you get pockets of these like minded people, it’s just toxic and negative. Their mindset tells them every day about all the shit problems there are.

I have one life. If something makes me unhappy I change it.

Our Foodbank use is steadily rising. It’s most definitely got busier since the roll out of Universal Credit in Lambeth. Being in connection with many other Foodbank’s around the UK, not just in The Trussell Trust, they are too reporting very high numbers as opposed to say, 18 months ago.

Indeed but that doesn't mean the demand wasn't there before, in 2004 the Trussell Trust had 2 foodbanks, in 2015 they gave out over a million food parcels. Nobody can make the claim that they wouldn't have distributed over a million parcels in 2004 if they'd had the funds, public awareness and more foodbanks. We only observe the supply, not the demand.

You could argue that say, when we opened our Foodbank 5 years ago, why wasn’t there as much demand as there is now. Even once it had been established for the area. Social workers, JobCentre staff, support workers, GPs, they’re all seeing rises in the number of vouchers they’re writing in the area.

"Plus I’m a great believer in life is what you make it. There are definite sectors in society that think the opposite and simply wait for life to unfold and fall in their lap. When you get pockets of these like minded people, it’s just toxic and negative. Their mindset tells them every day about all the shit problems there are.

I have one life. If something makes me unhappy I change it. "

It's learned helplessness.

British people are the 9th most pessimistic about future economic growth whilst the Chinese are the 7th most optimistic. My experience of comparing the two is that Chinese people want the country to do well because they know everyone does better eventually. Whilst British people denegerate into identity politics because they have no real hope of a bigger our and just want to fight for a bigger slice of it for their group.

I've lived in Italy, California, and Canada, as well as Wales, Yorkshire, London, and now Dorset. I love this beautiful world and am looking forward to living somewhere else on it soon. For me it's as simple as that

You only get one life. Pointless letting it get defined and constricted by a little mind. Live big and enjoy the sun whilst it lasts... wherever you are

"We’re so lucky to live in this country and not be worried about being shot by a PC, or bombed by our own government, or imprisoned for speaking freely. Yes, there are bad things, but there are also a lot of wonderful things, too.

I'm afraid to say those things have happened in modern times, the first two took place on 7/7/05 for example, the other one is coming and in fact is already here! (can explain a bit more). Count me as another to thumb up that negative post someone made. Some things might be negative but need to be said. I'd rather know the score and deal from there, while keeping a glass full attitude.

I'm happy to be a UK dude, and believe we can do a lot better. Which is why I like to try to know what's really going on in high places and shine the light baby! Which happily more and more people are doing!

Social workers, JobCentre staff, support workers, GPs, they’re all seeing rises in the number of vouchers they’re writing in the area. "

It's possible, I'm just saying that it's not a fact that the demand wasn't there before. Supply grew during years that most people consider prosperous. Virtually every criticism in this thread has some nuance like that.

Other people criticising the monarchy for not being elected are poorly informed. There's something called the democracy index and corruption perception index. The UK scores better than the US on both, despite the latter having an totally elected political system and no royal family. So as a criticism, it fails the evidence test.

My solution would be to give every 18 year old in the country a tax payer funded, two week trip to a developing country. It would prevent most of them becoming whinging adults.

Yup and people would also learn from developing countries too. I'm not talking about shipping people off to the fucking Congo to get shot at, but go somewhere like India, China, Brazil etc. There's good things there as well as bad. But it makes you realise what you've actually got here.

The problem with grumpy little Britons is that they forget how rare and incredible it is to live in a country where you can get things like a fair trial. In the UK, 82% of court cases end in conviction. Which makes sense if you think about it. In China it's over 99.9% (literally).

I'd quite like to live in some of those places. I love the freedom you feel over there that you can't have here. I love the comraderie and creativity too. Very inspiring. Obviously it's a totally different issue for the people who are stuck there. I wouldn't want to get stuck in any of those countries and not be able to come back. But part of me would prefer to die of old age in some remote foreign place where I'm left to do so by myself or with my family than in a strip lit hospital hooked up to a million machines. Such an undignified exit.

But yes some cross pollination would be great

People love to blame others when something is wrong!

The main issues with this country that have been highlighted effect the majority of us. Tory, labour, right, left, all rely on the NHS and free education. There's not a lot of point blaming each other. The truth is that whether it's Tory or Labour, limp wristed lefties or right wing wankers, none of them have been particularly effective at understanding and solving the problems that effect society and the majority of people. It doesn't matter whether the party that's in power is a party you voted for, you have to keep your eyes on them and hold them accountable and, you can only do this if you get involved! If people think that if they work and pay their taxes that they can then sit back and trust whoever is in power to allocate those taxes and run the country in a way that we all see fit, and just moan if they don't then, they shouldn't be surprised when things start going to the dogs!

People disengaged from politics, where since the late 70s, there has been an ideological process cresting a more selfish and disrespectful population towards each other, whilst the state is dismantled around them, leaving them to become fodder for the rich elite. Whilst the very wealthy have engineered this, the only hatred and anger is towards each other, whilst existing in an increasingly dog eat dog world - whilst worshipping the great overlords with wealth, such as Boris or Rees mogg and continuing to buy the rags that stir hatred, such as the mail, express and sun with pride. After reading this thread just want to say bravo to everyone for not descending into a ‘Twitter mob’ mentality and actually having civilised debate. Given the nature of this thread I’d like to recommend some books that will better explain certain issues, when I read them they were very informative. They are all written in a plain English style so anyone can read and understand the arguments made.

If you haven’t read it already

The Panama Papers by B Obermayer and F Obermaier - about dodgy offshore banking.

Bad science by Ben Goldacre - about people using bad science to make unfounded claims about products, diets etc for instance Homeopathy, antioxidants, facecream, moisturisers a bit dated as was written in 2009 but still funny

Bad Pharma by Ben Goldacre again - about dodgy pharma companies.

The War We Never Fought - by Peter Hitchens explains how politicians, celebrities and the media have, since the 1970’s misled the public on the alleged war on a particularly green mind altering substance he explains and quite convincingly shows how the alleged ‘war on mind altering substances’ was never really waged. He’s not everyone’s cup of tea mind but he makes (in my opinion) a pretty solid argument.

You should also check out

What money can’t buy: the moral limits of markets by Michael Sandel, you can listen to this for free search google for BBC Reith Lecture or you can listen as a podcast on your apple iphone.

Justice: what’s the right thing to do - by Micheal sandel again - an awesome read.

The Road to Serfdom by F.A.Hayek,

Just remember you might not agree with everything said in some of these books but you’ll be better informed and wiser to why Britain is in the odd(depending on your opinion) state it’s in today

I think as a nation we can often lack a sense of perspective. Things are not all rosy, but there again, they never have been and never will be.

People often cite the margins I. Society, particularly around the accumulation of wealth and power. But it is worth noting that having negligible disparity of between the top and bottom, does not necessarily mean that everyone is doing well. There are plenty of countries where this is the case and the everyone has very little. Yes there is, a divide in terms of material possessions, but the elite or toxic 1% as it is often referred to, isn't a constant. Its cohort changes all the time, as does that at the bottom. Also it is worth noting, the standard of living for pretty much all of the country is so much better now than it has ever been.

Where this country appears to be falling down at the minute is a lack of spine, obsessing over what is 'right' and what is effective.

Equality of opportunity = inequality of outcome.

Equality of outcome = inequality of opportunity.

There is always going to be some inequality it's just a case of deciding how much we can tolerate as a society.
