Like quite a few northern soul tracks, one of my/our faves is The Snake.

That's a kareoke favourite of mine ...... sings in best pub singer voice ..... On her way to work one morning, down the path alongside the lake ....... A tender hearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake

His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew

"Oh well," she cried, "I'll take you in and I'll take care of you"

"Take me in oh tender woman

Take me in, for heaven's sake

Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

She wrapped him up all cozy in a curvature of silk

And then laid him by the fireside with some honey and some milk

Now she hurried home from workthat night as soon as she arrived

She found that pretty snake she'd taking in had been revived

"Take me in, oh tender woman

Take me in, for heaven's sake

Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

Now she clutched him to her bosom, "You're so beautiful," she cried

"But if I hadn't brought you in by now you might have died"

Now she stroked his pretty skin and then she kissed and held him tight

But instead of saying thanks, that snake gave her a vicious bite

"Take me in, oh tender woman

Take me in, for heaven's sake

Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

"I saved you," cried that woman

"And you've bit me even, why?

You know your bite is poisonous and now I'm going to die"

"Oh shut up, silly woman," said the reptile with a grin

"You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in

"Take me in, oh tender woman

Take me in, for heaven's sake

Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

I do love a bit of "northern"; although of course, am far too young to have ever visited the Casino etc. Fave tune...

Wigan Ovation - Skiing in the Snow

Only kidding, probably Marlena Shaw's Wade in the Water and Terry Callier - Ordinary Joe. For something more upbeat, cannot go wrong with a bit of Willie Mitchell.

Oh, I love you when you hug and kiss me

I get the feeling that you really miss me

Girl, I can't stand it when you start acting funny

And look at me like I'm buggin' you honey

Oh moody woman you change like the weather

Moody woman but you got it together

Moody, moody, moody woman I love you

You bet your life I do

Oh variety is the spice of life

Yes the pain makes the pleasure nice

You make my day when you say you need me

But that's no way to play when you say you're gonna leave me

Moody woman, oh I love you

Moody woman I think the world of you

Moody, moody, moody woman I love you

You bet your life I do

Oh baby you could be impossibly smart

You know you can girl

But I know you love me

You think the world of me

and you got a great big heart

People tell me that love's blind

There ain't no love as blind as mine

And though I have to suffer when you're feeling blue

My life would be much tougher if I didn't have you

Oh moody woman I know all about you

Moody woman can't live without you

Moody, moody, moody woman I love you

You bet your life I do

Oh moody woman yo know I love you

Moody woman I think the world of you

You have been my whole life

Moody woman I don't want to leave you

Moody baby you know that I need you

Why don't you let me love you

Loads of good tunes on there and the show also has a slot called "Talcum Time" where he plays a few Northern Soul records chosen by listeners.

It came out at the beginning of the year and played the art house cinemas. You can get on dvd and its a good film but not a homage to northern soul as such; basically its a boy meets girl film with a cheesy ending against a backdrop of northern soul. Keep that in mind and its a pretty good 70 minutes of your life.
