How was that not a penalty?

In the VAR room, are they watching pornography rather than the game?

All I can think of, is that he may have already lost the ball before the "incident". Looked a penalty, but I'm glad it wasn't given.

Sort of. I think he means that only Brazil in 1958, have won the world cup, when it has been held in Europe. Every other world cup that a south American team has won, has been outside Europe.

when I saw it first I thought the ball had crossed the byline when he was fouled, in which case a goal kick was correct - but I haven't seen it again since.

Germany are the only country to win the world cup when it has been held in South America, and that was only four years ago.

I can understand why that was the case maybe 40-50 years ago - what with travel etc. It shouldn't really be much of a factor now, as most decent South American players, play in Europe now anyway (most start off in Russia weirdly enough).

In years gone by I suppose it could have been a temperature thing... But a lot of their players now play here. Traditionally high temperatures are a problem for northern European nations when playing in hot climates... The next world cup could be played in a 40°c ish climate. Doing anything in those temperatures is hard work, let alone playing football. I've worked in 50°c and we did 15 minutes work and then had about the same time to rehydrate in a air conditioned environment before starting again.

The original point was that if the world cup is held in Europe, it has always stayed in Europe - apart from in 1958, when it didn't stay in Europe, because Brazil won it, and took it to South America. Your logic, is actually backing my point up. No matter how you dress it up, only Brazil in 1958, have "taken" the world cup, when it has been held in Europe.

After all those years, Europe finally caught up in the last two World Cups.

Think england will struggle today if I'm honest.

The media and pundits going on about how we got best route to the final and not focusing on one game at a time.

England scored a late winner against nigeria, beat Panama the weakest team in the tournament, got beat by Belgium and scraped through against columbia.

We havnt scored a goal from open play in last 2 games and didnt look like scoring either in both games.

Sweden may not be the best team but i think they will give us a really difficult game and can go either way.

I wouldn't take much noticed of what the pundits are saying - it's their job to hype everything up.

We did rely on a late winner against Tunisia, but it took Brazil 90 minutes to score against Costa Rica, who are no great shakes either.

As for Panama being the weakest team in the tournament - they may well be, but this is the same Panama team that Belgium couldn't score against until the 47th minute.

The Belgium game doesn't count - it was the B team.

Did you see Slavin Bilic's take on the build up to the Colombia game - it was spot on, and quite funny:

5 days before the game:- "Colombia? Bring it on!!"

2 days before the game:- "In Two days, we will be playing a good Colombian team" .

1 Day before the game:- "Tomorrow, we will be playing Colombia - a very dangerous team going forward"

Day of the game:- "OH MY GOD!! IT'S COLOMBIA!!!"

We always under-estimate ourselves, and pay too much respect to the opposition. Sweden are average. They were in a very poor group, and they beat an average Swiss team in the last round. They wouldn't have beaten Colombia.

This will be a much easier game.

(I hope)

(I hope)

England underestimate themselves?

You having a laugh fella?

Hilariously misplaced expectations of winning every major tournament with shit teams and ugly football more like"

And when was this? When has the England Football team thought "We'll win this". Not in my lifetime. They've gone to tournaments, thinking they had a chance - and why shouldn't they?

I think you're getting what the media say, mixed up with the real expectations.

This year, we have a relatively easy path to the final, and all of a sudden the media are bigging Sweden up. Sweden? Really?

A lot of fans are telling us, how we weren't that good against this team or that team, and we haven't done this for so many years etc etc - Conveniently leaving out that every other team in the tournament has the same issues.

When Brazil only beat someone like Costa Rica 2-0, we hear "well they didn't get out of second gear" - Really? Or is that about as good a Brazil are. When we beat someone 6-1, it's "well that team must be rubbish".

Yes - we under-estimate ourselves.

Finals:England vs Belgium, but we will not win. This world cup will be the disappointing one than previous completions for us, we will not go ever so close again. By the time of next world cup, this team will be old and we will expect a lot from them which will take to disappointment

"Think england will struggle today if I'm honest.

I agree with you to a point - We will probably lose in the final (France I think). Thing with England is, is that we are very hard to beat. We usually go out on Penalties - 90, 98, 06. The difference now is, that we have a very very good keeper when it comes to penalties. So maybe it will be different now.

This team is still quite young though. We also have to remember that we won the U17 World Cup, the U20 World Cup, and lost in the semi final of the U21 World Cup. We have young players coming through with a tournament mentality, and also they know how to win.

Add that to a young manager, then the future is bright.

But on the other hand, this could be it - the closest we will ever get.

So we should all just enjoy it! Dream the dream!!

Whatever the score today it will be a successful tournament in my eyes, Overall its been a very good world cup with some exciting matches,

I think the FA should put a serious bid in for the 2030 and get the premier league to back them, The games are shown all over the world, Every live game should have England or UK for 2030 world cup advertisements

To be fair it makes a mockery of the process involved .

Neith of these teams deserves to be here if the truth be known , Sweden just bore the other team to death , and we’ve been almighty lucky with the qualifying group , and the games here in Russia .

We’ve only played one decent team , and we lost that , hence why we are playing Sweden today and not Brazil yesterday .

To be rewarded for failure is crazy but we are now watching that reward , and aren’t we lucky

Controversial opinion but Sterling has scared the shit out of the swedes so far. His pace has caused them so many problems, even if he can’t find the net he’s making space and winning corners. The more they focus on him the more space the rest of the team get around the area.

Up north!

Great result, great management, great pride, passion and effort. Controversial here but... underpaid, overperforming, underrated heroes!

Pickford - unbelievable reactions

Walker - pace & covering ability

Stones - composure, leader, reading if the game, maturity, world class

Maguire - brave, strong, powerful lion

Trippier - pace, delivery, always a threat with assists

Young - steady, calm, set pieces

Lingard - movement, stamina, work-rate

Alli - skill, ability, movement

Sterling - pace, creativity, stretches the game with fantastic movement both short & long. Stretches defences, so so so underrated.

Kane - world class, holds the ball up, strength, power, aerial ability.

Cone on England! Arise sir Gareth!
