It really depends what you want it for. If you've already got keyboard, mouse, and monitor then a Mac Mini is a possibility and quite a cheap option.

However an iMac is a mighty piece of kit, I've got a 24" Intel iMac, which isn't as customizable as a Mac Pro but is just as useful and powerful. In real time with most tasks you couldn't tell the difference. And it's much cheaper than the Pro.

Furthermore the iMac is so reliable it should last between 10-15 years with good use and may only need memory upgrades and the occassional OS upgrades. Otherwise I've always found them to be a better choice. And the quality of the screen is stunning!

I have the 27" iMac which is just awesome, takes up very little space on the desk and the screen is perfect for iMovie and iPhoto, also run, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, GoLive, Indesign and Quark, all apps pretty much open at the same time and shows little in terms of speed loss when doing tasks

Yup! And never crashes, and doesn't constantly send up stupid messages, and doesn't constantly ask you to update this, that, and the other. And basically just works with minimum hassle.

Now what OS does that remind you of?

Mac mini is amazing if you get the right one, we have ours set up in the living room on the tv, its where we watch all our downloaded stuff and where we do our surfing if we have guests that want to find something out,

we have a macbook pro which is great too but it doesn't get used as much usually when on the move because of the usability of the mini mac with the big screen.

i dont see that there would be much point in getting a mini mac if we werent using it on the big screen but i dont know about the reliability/useability of the imac

Choose either and you are a WINNING!

The Mini has less raw power then an iMac but it is a lot cheaper if you already have the other peripherals (the mini is aimed at PC switchers who already have their bits).

I suppose it depends on what you want to use it for. If you only want to browse the web, check emails and word process then the Mini is perfect. If you want to run the apps Mally mentions you need the grunt the iMac provides. Also as black bolt says, the iMac display is stunning.

Go and visit a Mac store and see the differences, ask the store people their opinion and help, the staff didn't used to be sales orientated just there to help you.

Have you thought about a Mac book?

There is a certain amount of PC snobbery among Apple users that makes me think, "Hmmm, why do they blow Apple's trumpet so hard when it's simply an alternative to Windows?"

I've run Windows on every PC I've ever had and only had limited problems with them. The laptop I'me using now has run perfectly well with zero crashes and no hardware failures at all since I purchased it two and half years ago - but then I keep it religiously clean and have the best firewall, AV and anti-spyware software I could find.

My main dislike of Apple Inc. is the way they tend to ignore the fact that any other form of computing exists and all their hardware is proprietary. Want an iPhone? You gotta run apps only available at Apple outlets. Want an iPad - no chance of connecting to it via usb as it doesn't have one. As for iMacs - a fancy screen behind which is running what is essentially a different way of launching a window-based OS doesn't make me want to rush out and buy one.

As for iPod/iShuffle et al - what's point in a music playback device that can store thousands of songs if you can't navigate around them quickly, easily, and create playlists of your favourite tunes effortlessly.

In my opinion the early macs out classed the PC's of their time but not anymore, since Apple ditched the Motorola CPU's in favour of Intel making them basically PC's in an apple box capable of running MS windows software a lot of the arguments for having a mac have gone out the window (excuse the pun).

99% agree with this! The only bit I have reservations about is "There is a certain amount of PC snobbery among Apple users"

There is TOTAL snobbery by Apple users!
