I don't think anything official ever gets refunded that way, isn't it always by a cheque.

Sounds bogus.

Have you recently sold a car?

If in doubt, call dvla.

It’s a scam, delete it. The only way you get a refund is if you sell or scrap your car and you have full months remaining. They automatically refund the money to the original payment method so would never ask for your card details.

Fraud. Have you applied for a refund after you have sold a car?

This is how it really works

Not necessarily a virus, they’re just after your card details.

I had one recently from HMRC saying similar. If you click on the sender it will be from a bogus email address! Mine was from a Hotmail email

The DVLA will automatically refund any monies due ... You don't need to complete anything these days x

Have you sold a vehicle, if not, you're not due a refund. More likely a scam

We’re aware that some members of the public are receiving emails, texts and telephone calls claiming to be from DVLA. Links to a website mocked up to look like a DVLA online service are sometimes included in the message. We don’t send emails or text messages with links to websites asking you to confirm your personal details or payment information. We strongly advise anyone who receives such a request not to open the link and delete the item.

Dear god, to people actually fall for this kind of thing. There will be some guy in Nigeria rubbing his hands waiting for your reply and his card cloning machine will be getting fired up.

Lucky escape, they would have emptied your bank account. Note how they asked for debit card, not credit card.

Don't respond. The DVLA know about this scam and even mention it on their automated system. Refunds are always paid by cheque and the DVLA will never send any communication asking you to divulge details of your bank account.

They've asked people not to contact them as they're investigating it.

No tax setup (as far as I'm aware) is in the business of correcting and refunding mistakes unless you've seen it and requested a refund based on evidence.

You get a refund when you sell or scrap a car, if there is at least one full month remaining on the "tax disc", so they do pay refunds, just not like this scam.
