Tell them a little about you - why you're contacting them and think they'd be the sort of person you'd like to meet and why they might like to meet you. Pick up on other things they've said in their profile and comment on them, drop in a compliment or two.

It's no different really from starting a conversation with someone in the "real world"

It might read that way written out like that but worded as an actual message is different - I don't send many "cold" messages but when I do that's the rough format I use and it's not failed me yet.

That said there is of course no magic formula that works for all either
