How hard would it be to make a movie?

Not a sex tape but a proper film. Like you get these independent movies that do quite well. How do you go about getting it from paper to big screen?

There is funding available but it is very competitive and will require a lot of work to secure. Many independent film makers have financed their projects themselves in order to further their careeers and to demonstrate their talent.

Getting finance and someone to distribute it would be the main struggle imo

Find a haunted scene and film it, like The Blair Witch Project - shaky camera included, so perhaps not needing much skill. Probably thousands of ghosts around who would like a movie career.

There was a couple on tv last week,one an established actor and one a director. They've made an independent film,it took ten years in total from start to finish. Finance was the biggest stumbling block.

Not that easy I gather.

I was watching Graham Norton last week and Rupert Everett and Natalie Dormer were both saying how difficult it was to get a film made. Getting the finance in place, losing it again. Getting actors losing actors.

Or you can just focus on the script making it perfect then enter it into some of the yearly movie festivals and hope some producer likes it enough to throw money your way?

I have no personal experience but have a very good friend who has always wanted to make films. Many years ago he made films with friends as actors, myself included, using just a video camera. It didn't look great but he had a decent script and loads of enthusiasm and it turned out OK. Each time he made a film he had to spend more but now it is his full time job. Doing very well for himself, made some full length feature films, goes to many film festivals and networks with money men to get funding. The key element is a good script, after that you need luck and commitment.

First finance, producer (effectively project manager) Director, cast, crew and then locations, then editing and sound. A huge investment and in order to obtain tax breaks needs to be legit and above board or u have no chance. !

if this is your first go at it, I recommend just start with making a few different clips and sketches just to get an idea of how the process works before you jump in the deep end

The lottery can provide funding, but you need a pretty good concept, usually something with a decent social impact.

Present a story board to show how you visualise the film l

.

A basic script, location ideas, filming permit costs off applicable.

Format you are going to shoot on, is film or digital.

Just a few details required to pitch for funding

I came up with the concept, cast and started producing a film called Dressed as a Girl (it's on Netflix). Was near impossible to find funding and drove me crackers so stepped away from production (though still billed as an Associate Producer and star in it).

It only got finished as the director put a lot of his own money into the film. It toured the world at film festivals, was long listed for a BAFTA, good press but we still owe money on it.

I know others who work in the film industry who've struggled to get anything made at all so at least we finished it.

I've numerous ideas for films but without a bottomless pit of cash and solid connections, would never do it again. Considering creative writing instead

It's not hard to make a short film these days, the technology is cheaper than ever before. If it's just something to amuse friends and family, a mobile phone mounted on a tripod will do perfectly well. Family and friends can be roped in as actors. It's just the same as taking super-8 home movies years ago, but where that cost maybe £10 for 3 minutes of grainy scratchy film (a lot of money then) a decent phone now will do HD quality for zero consumables cost.

What is more difficult is making even a short film that anybody else will want to see. The route to breaking onto the big screen is very long and arduous, very few people ever get there. Investment needed is from tens of thousands for a few minutes of a short film, through to millions for full blown movies. Having a camera becomes the smallest part of it - millions of people are taking stuff on their phones and putting it on u tube. Some of it is of amazing quality. But very little ever gets watched by anybody outside of their own circle of friends and followers.

Fifty years ago there were 100,000 kids in america shooting bits of super-8 film, but only one of them grew up to be steven spielberg. Now there are tens of millions with the use of phone cameras, but there's still only one vacancy for the next generation spielberg.

Depends on the quality you want and who you want to see it. If it’s a hobby thug then fairly easy. To make money, harder. Although there is youporn and xhamster so you could probably do ok on profits. I have done experience and contacts in this as I write and sell erotica through amazon. In a past life I also made wedding videos. The relevance being I still have the camera and edit software.,maybe pm me?

Sounds like you have a story.

That needs to be turned into a script and then into a movie. Both require a great deal of skill.

You could think about speaking to a local film school degree course to see if somebody fancies taking it on as a project, but it would undoubt be treated as a 'short'.

Films take time, effort, skill and resources. If it was easy we'd all be doing it.
