Be careful of horseflies

Why? Because they can even chomp through clothes!

Woke up Saturday morning and my left wrist was looking swollen with a small blister whilst the rest of my surrounding skin was bright red and boiling to touch.

It's an allergic reaction to a horsefly bite.

It got bigger and bigger and the redness was spreading up my arm yesterday and the blister was now weeping all think gunky shit so went to out of hours surgery in the hospital and they've given me antibiotics to take SIX times a day. Never had tabs that required 6 doses a day. I think I'm gonna be ok as the redness is fading but everyone be careful when they're outside, especially if you're near a water source as that's where you're likely to find horseflies.

They're total bucking fastards. I've not been able to close my fist for over a week after a bite on a couple of fingers.

And I didn't even get chance to kill the fucker as revenge.

You're joking, horses are really sensitive skinned, horseflies can drive them insane if they don't have deep shade to hide in. I always turn mine out at night and bring them in for the day at this time of year. I used to have to get up at 5 am to ride before the bloody horseflies got up, and they can bite through a pair of jods, bastud things!

And some horses get great swollen wheals from the bites too - they'll be bad this week in the heat but gone in a week or two.

Only ever been bitten once by a horsefly so i know how awful it can be..my whole arm swelled up and took weeks to get it right again, even with antibiotics x

Horse flies are more active when there's less wind, are attracted to bright colors. The best way to avoid getting got is to keep covered up. But use an insect repellent, I use a citronella gel plus carry wipes and spray to top up.

They don't sting, they cut the skin with scissor like mouth parts, only the female bites as she needs blood to reproduce. Because it's a cut rather than a sting they are much more prone to infection so it's best to immediately wash a bite and use an after bite lotion/pen and take an antihistamine asap.

Yes, I've been bitten by these buggers many times and learned the hard way.

As soon as you get bitten by one take an anti histamine. That shoukd help .

I let one fester for a few days and ended up too on a course of anti biotics .

So any bite from a flying insect take an anti histamine straight away and you will be as right as ninepence

Coopers is the only one that works for horseflies, that's Permethrin based.

I feel your pain.

The last time I was bitten by one of those nasty little feckers was on my shin. The heat it gave off was scary, and the lump was almost the same size as a tennis ball. Took about 6 months for it to completely disappear but left a dent in my shin bone, I can still feel it slightly almost 15 years later.

Any one that use,s a outdoor swimming pool beware of the horseflys,and If only takeing some blood(not sure about horseflys) midges, mozz,s gnats,they replace the blood with venom if not for the venom it perhaps mainly would go unoticed depending on how many hits you took.. you can,t but hate the bloody things.. as much as I hate wasps they don,t act like vampires, I,ll give any hornets I find a reprieve as they are usually more docile and scarce/rare here I,ve only ever seen one of them and that was here..

The problem is with horeflies is they have mandibles that cut like scissors so cause more damage than something like mosquitoes which have needle like mouthparts.

Yes true but(depending on where you live)damage limitation can rise with malaria for Instance, the horsefly thou certainly sounds like a nasty piece of work..

Fortunately i don't think we have to worry about malaria out here on the glorious Levels, just mosquitoes the size of helicopters.

I suffer with them in had one bite me on the back of my leg is left it but then went to the doctors and they said if you had left it for a few more weeks the infection would have gone in to my blood

Just into summertime the heat kicks off and all the nastys come out thou I like to see a bit of sunshine/warmth It also reminds me I,m more adaptable to a more temperate climate and less nastys.. I let the spiders deal with the rest..

Doctor said it was a horsefly bite, my nan did too. Also I'd been walking up the forrestry the 3 days before it happened which also has streams and stagnant water plus there were random piles of horse shit with flies swarming over it so I assume they were horseflies.

They are nasty fuckers areas with deer are worse but they rent to taste human blood and go yuk!!! We have to ride our horses at 5 am and be done by 8.30 to avoid them! So sunbathing naked from 10 PM to 8 am is the best time to avoid them!
